NOTES AND COMMENTS.
The Ledger noted some weetcs ago
that some New York parties had se*
cured the immense iron beds on the
estate of the late Col. John L. Black
and that they would work them.
These men meant business from the
start and a few days ago put a force
of men to woik digging ore. Of
course we do not know their plans
but judging from the immense quan
tity and value of their ore we look
for their incipient work to grow into
one of the most important industrial
enterorises in the state.
* ♦ ♦ ♦
Down with the distilleries in Chero
kee county. They exercise an in
fluence for evil that all the gospel
and good moral influence of a com
munity cannot successfully cope
with. The men who engage in it may
not be actuated by mercenary motives,
but they certainly can have no desire
to elevate and improve the standard
of Jmanhood. This is a question
which every man should take a stand
on and the man who does net do so
lacks stamina, backbone and moral
courage. Down with the devilish de
vices of the debauchees.

Col. H. Fay Gaffney and wife de
parted last week for their new home
in Peunsylv .nia. Sunday they wor
shipped at a church in Delaware.
During the service the minister offer
ed a petition in which he prtyed for
“the slums, the heathen and the
South.” Good! We have no doubt
but what the reverend gentleman was
sincere and meant well, but it must
have been amazing to Col. Gaffney
and his excellent wife to bear his
supplication. How utterly ignorant
these well-meaning Pharisees are!
It would no doubt astonish this
reverend gentleman to be told that
there is more genuine Christianity in
the Dixie than in New England, yet
it is a profound fact. We admire
his spirit but despise his ignorance.

So the strenuous president Las per
sisted in appointing Crum. Mr.
Roosevelt is a very erratic gentleman.
He may be a big man, but he posses
ses a powerful small manner of show
ing it. We have no personal 8<*
quaintance with either the president
or his uopointee, but we venture the
assertion that Crum is his equals, if
not his superior, in every respect.
It’s disgusting to see a white man,
who professes to be president of a
white nation, toadying to the colored
element. Bui that is simply what
Mr. Roosevelt is doing, ana he is do
ing it for the sole purpose of controll
ing the colored delegation in the na
tional convention and to secure vnes
in Northern and Western States where
that element has the balance of
power. We sincerely trust he may
succeed in having himself re-nomi
nated, for we know of no candidate
the G. O. P. might put. up who would
be easier for the Democrats to knock
dowo.
Strive Agaiutit the Distillery.
The time has come when all respect-
%
able citizens should obey the law
with reference to making and selling
whiskey.
Public opinion should assert itself
and be made so strong that all law-
abiding citizens would frowo upon a
distillery in their community.
A still is a curse to any communi
ty. They always manage to sell around
the still. Let us watch our borders
on the North Carolina line.

Gentlemen:—I have^had eczema
over thirty years, have tried many
remedies prescribed by various physi
cians, but to nothing has the disease
yielded so quickly as to Liquid Sul
phur. I think if used properly it is
undoubtedly a specific for eczema.
I have prescribed it for others with
most satisfactory results. I consider
it the best remedy for cutaneous
affections I have ever known, and re
gard it as the greatest medical dis
covery of the age.

MILLINERY OPENINGS.
Carroll, Carpenter & Byers' Beautiful Lines
on Display W. •!. Wilkins'Opening.
The spring time has come again
with all its myriads of dowers and
blossoms and singing birds; nature’s
cheek is aglow with the bloom of
youth and she breathes a sweet in
cense upon the balmy air, while all
things animate rejoice over the oirth
of the new season. As with nature,
so with human kind. New life pe.-
vades the system ; new hopes and new
aspirations are born; enthusiasm
ruus higher; the future wears a rosier
coloring; the whole world seems
brighter and better, and a perfect
realization is had of what a grand
thing it to be alive.
It is the time for new hats, new
bonnets,, new dresses, new every
thing to wear Art has vied with
nature this season and has rivaled
her in the beauty of its productions.
Those of our merchants who cater to
the fashions in feminine wear have
kept pace with the season and their
places are ablaze with all the bright,
new creations in spring and summer
goods fresh from the fashion centers
of the north. “Spring openings” are
now in order, and the initial event of
the kind was at the Grauard street
establishment ot Messrs. Carroll,
Carpenter & Byers Thursday and
yesterday. The name of this firm is
synonymous with style and excellence
of quality. They keep apace with
the times and their lines are replete
with the best goods obtainable. Their
millinery and spring dress goods this
year are the prettiest, nobbiest and
daintiest that the designer’s art could
produce, and would be a credit to an
establishment of larger pretentions.
On their opening days these goods
were displayed to the best advantage
possible, and formed a picture which
sent a thrill of delight through many
a female heart. Their parlors and
show winaows were perfect bowers of
springtime loveliness, arrayed, as
they were, in fruits and flowers, the
prevailing millinery fads of the sea
son, interwoven with all the dainty
lacework and delicately-tinted para’
phernaliatbat so delights the heart
of women. The parlors were lovely,
and were crowded both days with a
gay throng of feminine inspectors who
vied in loveliness with their surround
ings. The display throughout gave
evidence of the touch 01 a muster
hand, and Miss Wilson, the efficient
milliner, should be proud of her
talents and her artistic ability. With
her usual grace and courtesy she
made the hours pass pleasantly to
her visitors and seemed to take great
pleasure in giving them the benefit
of her extensive knowledge in regard
to the prevailing fashious.
Messrs. W. J. Wilkins it Co. will
have their spring opening on Monday
and Tuesday of next week, 80th and
31st. They also have a full hue of
everything new and stylish in mil
hnery and ladies’ dress yo'ids; and
ihe ladies may expect to see some
lovely creations in head dress and
some rich and beautiful fabrics in
dress goods.
Mr. Switzer has added a millinery
department to his ‘‘Dixie” establish
ment, and there too, may be found
everything that’s new, swell and
“catchy” in the bat line.

Consumption is a human
weed flourishing best in weak
lungs. Like other weeds it’s
easily destroyed while young;
when old, sometimes im
possible.
Strengthen the lungs as you
would weak land and the
weeds will disappear.
The best lung fertilizer is
Scott’s Emulsion. Salt pork
is good too, but it is very hard
io digest.
The time to treat consump
tion is when you begin trying
to hide it from yourself.
Others see it, you won’t.
Don’t wait until you can’t
deceive yourself any longer.
Begin with the first thought
to take Scott’s Emulsion. If
it isn’t really consumption so
much the better; you will soon
forget it and be better for the
treatment. If it is consump

cured at once, hut if you will
begin in time and will be
rigidly regular in your treat

Huutli Carollim'H Senator Is Greeted With
Hisses and Cheers.
Detroit, March 25.—Senator Ben
R. lillman of South Carolina was
greeted with alternate storms of
cheers and hisses when he delivered an
impusHuned address on the racejprob-
lem last night at the Light Guard
armory, the audience bring evidently
divided between upholders of his
idets and strenuous opponents of
them. He said the North demanded
majority rule, and with a sneer added
that there were 235 U00 more negroes
than white people in South Carolina.
“It will mean that more blood will
flow than was shed in the civil war if
you pereist in trying to suhj-Ht us to
the domiuation of the blacks ” he
said
“You butchered the Indians ana
shut out the Chinamen, but had it
been known by the soldiers who sur
rendered with Lee that it was your
devilish intent to set up the negro
over the white man we would have
fought you till now.”
Upon the senator’s reference to
some of Sherman’s army as bum
mers, chicken thieves and carpet-
bagge.s, his Northern audience hr ke
out into such violent hissihg that the
speech was interrupted and some of
the more timid ones in the audience
feared trouble.
