j About Forty Knrolled for the Caotata,
• Kt her, the lleautiful yueeu.”
The chorus organized at the Buford
1 Street M E. church last Monday
night promises the greatest success
About forty of the sihging people
| were enrolled. Mr. Maxim wan de-
1 lighted with the outlook and says
that he never saw a chorus take hold
of the songs as readiiy.
The obji-ct is to give in costume the
■ popular music oratorio, “Esther the
Beautiful Queen,” at the opera house,
some time in April.
Miss Williams has been selected to
personate Esther; Mr. I. W. Richard
son to personate, Ahasuerus. the
King; Mr. J. W.. Lipscomb will ap
pear as Ha man, the King’s counselor ;
Miss Barton, as Hainan’s sister; Mr
H. K. Osborne, as Mordeeai; Miss
Eva Ross, as Mordecai’s sister.
! Several other characters are to be
selected by Mr. Maxim, as soon as
j the practice gets half under w«y.
The music committee of the church
who have the management in hand
are very much gratified at the gener
ous way the musical people have re-
sponned. Amongst the singers in
addition to those already named are:
Ur. DuPre, Mrs. Westrope, Mrs.
Allien. Mr. Walter Humphries, Miss
Ooudelock. Miss Barton. Mrs. (ioou-
ing, Mrs Bridges, an i many others,
but the names above given insure an
entertainment of the highest class.
Mr. Maxim is a born leader, and the
whole chorus seem to be aflame with
his enthusiasm.
Only about twenty-four books have
been purchased by the church, and
more will be ordered ns needed; sev
eral have signified their purpose to
buy books for their individual use,
as tile music is most interesting from
a literary standpoint. Mr. Maxim
announced that any one wanting the
books could gee them at cost, viz.,
forty-five ceuis And they can leave
their orders with him and .1 (’. Otcs,
and their orders will be promptly
filled. Let there be no misunder
standing: no member of the chorus
is required to buy his music, but only
necessary copies will bs bought by
the church, as each copy bought will
reduce the net profit for the church.
The chorus will meet again tonight
at 8 o’clock, and Mr. Maxim hopes to
commence practice promptly. There
has been a marked improvement in
the church music and congregational
singing during Miss Williams’ ad
ministration as organist. And it is
hoped that as many members of the
church ns possibly can. will join in
the chorus; and the training of Mr.
Maxim will no doubt tend to more
general singing on the part of the
congregttion. The Methodists have
every reason to expect an artistic and
financial success in the cantata, and
are gratified very much with the
sympathy, co-operation and active
assistance of their friends and sister
denominations
A Virginian Among I'm.
W. 8. B. Forbes, a prominent Lusi
ness man of Richmond, Ya., spent
Wednesday in the city the guest of
Mr. Paul V. Gaffney. Mr. Forbes is
a true Southern gettleiuan of pkas-
ant address, who possesses the happy
faeuLy of remembering old acquaint
ances. While here he met quite a
number of people with whom he
formerly did business when he was a
shoe merchant in Charlotte thirty
years ago, and he had no cifficulty in
remembering them. His home in
Richmond is a palatial one and he is
never happier than when entertaining
old friends. His half century rests
lightly on his shouldtrs and tils ap
pearance, like good wine, improves
with age.
Mr. Forbes took occasion to note
Gaffney’s wonderful growth and said
he believed, with the development of
our magnificent water power and
other resources that there was a great
future in store for Gaffney.
