unite their efforts next winter and
split the difference by securing tne
for Gaffney. Gaffney usuilly fur
nishes the sites for big public build

Lewis Waters, who lives four miles

position in the millinery department
of Carroll, Carpenter & Byers’ big
Granard street stores.
The many friends of Mrs. A. V.
Montgomery were pleased to see her
on the streets Wednesday after a con
finement of some weeks to her home
by grip.
Mr. Dock McClure and Miss Bertha
Neall, both of this city, were married
on Wednesday the 18th inst., by Rev.
J. B. Wilson.
Mr. John Black, who lives in the
western part of the city, and operates
his extensive farms near Thickety
mountain, planted some corn the
first of the week.
Mrs. R. R. Wilkins gave a birth
day dinner to Mr. Wilkins and her
sister, Mrs. A. V. Montgomery,
Wednesday, it being the birthday of
both husband and sister.
John I. Sarratt has let a contract to
Cecil & Curry to build another story
on his Limestone store. The contract
includes a pressed brick and plate
glass front for the whole building.
There was a runaway on Limestone
street yesterday morning. The wagon
was conside.ably smashed up and the
horse lost some cuticle. A few days
and a few dollars will repair the dam
ages.
Mr. J. M. Nelson has moved the
entire stock of goods from his Gra
nard street store, where, although
somewhat crowded, they are artisti
cally arranged, and Mr. Nelson is 1
pushing sales in his usual active man- !
ner.
The Ladies’ Aid society of the
Buford Street Methodist church ex
pect in the course of a week or ten
days to give a supper for the hem fit
of the society. Time and place will
be announced later.
The farmers have been in the field
this week. The soil *s getting in good
condition, the plo*s are moving, and
if good weather continues Cherokee
farmers will soon be in shape. They
are resourceful and can advance busi
ness rapidly when opportunity . fh r*.
Miss Lela Porter, of Blacksburg,
has accepted the position of milliner
in Carroll, Carpenter & Byers’ Grun-
ard street stores. Miss Porter i“ a
daughter of our fellow-citiz .u, Mr.
R. E Porter, and is a young lady
that* any county might be proud of.

H. J. Gillen, of Ouicago, III., one
of Sears, Roebuck & Cc.’s principal
buyers, was in the city Wednesday
on business for his house. He was
giving his attention to the mills while
here, especially the carpet mill, and
it would not surprise us to soon see
Gaffney Carpet Mill carpets occupy
ing a prominent place in the cata
logues of that big business house.

A Formor Gaffney Citizen Dies of Appo-
plexy lu Greenville.
Joseph R. Carter, a loom fixer, who
was at work at the Sampson mill, died
very suddenly Tuesday night at nine
o’clock. His death was due to appo-
plexy.
Mr. Carter was at work when the
summons came. He became sick aod

home and summoned a physician.
Despite the efforts of the physician
he died in a few hours.
Mr. Carter was thirty-nine years of
age. He was a member of the I. O.
O. F. His remains were brought to
Gaffney Wednesday aftemoo . They
were accompanied by Mr. D. P. Hides,
of tnis city, who is a brother-in Kw
of the deceased, and Mr. Franklin
Carter, a brother The n mains were
met at the depot by a number of rel
atives and friends.
Mr. Carter was a son of Rev J O
Carter, a well known citizen of this
place. Deceased was twice married
Surviving him are bis father four
brothers, William, Judson, Franklin
and Brooks, and two sisters, Mr. D
P Hides and Mrs. Mary Kirby.
The interment took place yesterday
at Providence burying ground.

urer. Much enthusiasm was shown
at this meeting and several good
speeches were mad©. An organ zv
tion of this kind has long been needed
in our community. The natural ad
vantages of the place are well known
to The Ledger’s readers, but people
outside of the almost immediate
vicinity are totally ignorant of the
many re ources of Blacksburg II is
the object of the Business Men’s

Death of Will to Reynolds.
Wille Reynolds, son of Mr Albert
Reynolds, of this city died T uesday
night about ill o’cIock. after an ill
ness of three weeks, of tvnhoid fever.
He was buried yesterday at Provi
dence.
This is the second child Mr. and
Mrs. Reynolds have lost within tbe
last month or two, and they have the
