RALLY AT MACEDONIA.
Docket Very Light, but a Few Guilty Ones

The court of general sessions con
vened Tuesday mornitg. All the offi
cers arid jurors were present, Solici
tor Henry having arrived Monday
night. He handed out bills agains'
John Henderson, white, for assault
and battery with intent to kill, one
against Wm. Grubb, white, for viola
tion of the dispensary law, one
against Hamlet Horn, white, for lar
ceny of live stock, one against iher-
man Johnson, colored, for larceny of
live stock, one against George Corry,
Joe Walker. Bob Lyles and Bill Daw
kins, all colored, for breaking into a
railroad car and larceny, the goods
stolen being some of the State's chem
ically pure, one against Munro Phil
lips for assault and battery with in
tent to kill. True bills were found in
ail the cases by the grand jury.
John Henderson was tried and
convicted of assault and battery of a
high and aggravated nature and sen
tenced to pay a fine of $35.00 or serve
three months on the county chain
gang. He paid.
Hamlet Horn plead guilty of lar
ceny of live stock and was sentenced
to a fine of $100.00 or twelve months
■m the county chain gang. Ho took
the months.
Will Grubb was tried and convic
ted of violating the dispensary law.
He wns sentenced to pay a fine of
$100 00 or serve four months on the
chaingang.
Sherman Johnson plead guilty to
laritpy of live stock, and this being
his second offence, he was sentenced
to three years on the county chain
gang,
George Corry, Joe Walker, Bob
Lyles and Bill Dawkins were tried
for breaking into a car and larceny
and were, to the astonishment of
everyone, acquitted.
The case against Phillips was re
manded to a magistrate for trial. The
judge dismissed all the jurors and
granted a few orders. The court then
adjourned till Wednesday morning
at 8:30 when a few minor matters
were disposed of. The court then ad
journed and the judge left on the
9:30 train for his home.
This was the lightest criminal
docket ever presented to a judge in
Gherokee county. We congratulate
the county on this light docket and
short term of court.
The court of common pleas will
convene next Monday the 9th inst.,
when jury cases will be tried. The
second week jurors are all expected
to be present.
Tnis was Judge Dantzler’s first
visit to Gaffney, and notwithstanding
the short term be impressed onr peo
ple with his abi ity, his learning, and
fairness as a judge,

We would recommend that the
county commissioners sell all the
old iron tha7 is on hand, left over
from the old prison room under the
court house and apply the proceeds
to the benefit of the county.
In addition we recommend that
the county commissioners paint the
roof of the court house with graphite

Marriage (Near Algood.
In accordance with the Missionary
plan of the Broad River Baptist As
sociation there will be a very active
campaign for Missions among the
Baptist churches of this section he
tween now and the meeting of the
association in August.
The first of these Rally Meetings
will be held with the Macedonia Bap
tist church nexr, Sunday. At eleven
o’clock in th*.* morning the pastor,
Rev. A. I). Davidson, will preach a
missionary sermon. Then dinner
will be seived on the ground by the
good people of Macedonia.
At 1:30 p. m. the afternoon service
will commence and at two o’clock
Rtv. Arch O. Gree, of the First Bap
tist church of Gaffney, will delizer
an address on “The Mission outlook
for the Twentieth Century.” It it
fitting that the first of these Mission
Rally Meetings should be held at the
Macedonia church for it is there the
Association will commence next Au
gust, and the Macedonia brethren
will certainly not lose the opportuni
ty of making a noble effort for Mis
sions and so set the pace for the other
churches of the Association. All
are cordially invited to attend this
Rally at Macedonia next Sunday.
