McLaurin as senator from South Carolina expiree. He tried to be of service to his people and at one time rode on the highest wave of the people’s fancy. Today he stands distrusted by many who ^misconstrued his motives, and so fickle is the public mind that he is retired to pri- Vite life utterly despised by a vast majority of the rank and file of the party of which he was once an idol. Mr. McLaurin may never be heard of again in politics, but wt believe he is honest and sincere. He yield ed up his ‘political life because he did not care to be bossed. He sacrificed bis office rather than sacri fice his principles and stifle his con victions. Time alone can disci jse the wisdom or folly of bis course. Cer tain it is that he has accomplished very little as a senator, but it is equally certain that it was no fault of his, for he tried his best, and an angel could not have done more than that. His successor is Mr A. C. Latimer, who has for years represented the Third South Carolina Congressional District at Washington. We^have a very limited knowledge of Mr. Lati mer, but he appears to be a very clever gentleman, not bri'liant, but a plodder, who. wheo he once u ! 'der- ta-es anything, does not easily give up. We trust he will make the state a good representative and believe that he will do nothing to bring discredit unon himself or shurm* upon his constituents. NOTES ANU COMMENTS. What we need is more con victions under the laws we now have. Let courts and jurors do their duty and then with tne aid of the school bouse you will see a decrease in crime. At the Star Theatre. “Hello Bill” at the Star Theatre Tuesday evening was greeted by a fair sized and enthusiastic audience that was unstinted in applause. Roanoke, Va., Feb. 28 —A lynch ing party composed of negroes led by Goy Brown, of Winston. N. C., weet to the house of Hum Gaffney, colored, near Blurfield, W. Va , at midnight last night, declaring they vnuld swing him up for some trifling of fense. While adjusting the rope, Gaffney drew u big revolver and fired into the mob. Brown was shot through the b idy and will die, while two others were seriously hurt. The firing brought the lynching opera ti'Hjs to a close and Gaffney later surrendered to the officers. |Sum Gaffney belonged to and was raised by the late Dr. J. G. Gaffney, of this place. I notice in Tuesday’s Ledger of the election of the superintendent and organist of the Buford street M. E. church. I did not know the Hunday school had it in its power to elect the superintendent, thinking that entire ly under the presiding elder’s control; thought both positions had been filled by these parties some time, as they had taken possession several Sundays in succession. Just before Christmas a oar whs broken into at the Houthern depot pere and several cases of dispensary whi&koy were stolen from it. Some days after the officers located some of the whiskey in the hands of Joe Walker, George Corry, Bob Lyles nnd Bill Dawkins, all negroes. They were indicted for car-bieaking nod larceny, and held for court. Tu-s- day their case was called and tii«y went, to trial, J. B. Bell and T. B Butler appeared for their defence. And if the evidence oid not sustain either charge then of course the verdict must h< not guilty. The jury after a short dolibera’icn returned a verdict of not crnlty. Job Corry, a trusted old colored man of Gaffney, subscribed for The Ledger Wednesday and said there were only two things that the negro and the white man were equal in. Ratliff, proprietor of The Bat tery, left last night, for Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston to purchase an immense stock of spring goods. Mr. J. A. Notwithstanding the rainy weather the children spent a most delightful day.
