If the work done on the public
highways in Ch.fvk e county sinot
the county was created iiad been done
under the dir-ction of a competent
engineer, had roads would not he
couipiairnd of .n every section ol the
county as now. File county would
have some'hing for the inou>"tnds of
dollars it has as good as thrown away
in t< mp oary road work.
Some of these days, away in the
future, some noe will see that per
manent road building is what is
needed, a competent engineer wil
have charge of the w’oik, and his sal
ary will be thought the mo«t judi
cious outlay the county makes.

Mr. M. V. Richards, land and Indus
trial agent, of the Hoothem Railway,
who is intensely interested in the ma
terial advancement of this section,
wrote us to the effect that he would
be glad to furnish any information in
his possession a'oeg the line of to
bacco culture that might be desired
by fanners who contemplated taking
the step. We asked those who might
he interested in the subject to furnish
us with thtAr nents and pcstoffico
address, but as yet not one of the
hundreds of furmtirs who are reader*
of The Ledger have signified their de
sire to embark in thi* (to this 'terri
tory) new industry. The Liriger is
qu.tu anxious that some one experi
ment with this crop. It is not neces
sary to go into it on a large scale at

we will undertake to find market
for the product if some one will try

Jt is very strange how long one of
these fellows who himself knows he
is smart and whose every word and
act furnishes new evidence of the
fact, stays smart before other people
find it out.

The prospects for the future of
Gaffney and Cherokee county were
never brighter. The nast year w»« »

that this year will oe still better, it

line make up your mind that you will

be proii>able to someone else as well
as yourself and then go and DO n.

One day Iasi month John D. Rock-
feller sent the price of kerosene oil
up 2c a gallon and made thereby
$2 000,000. The next day he gave
$1,000 000 to the Chicago University.
He robbed the consumer to fill his
own pocket with gold and tried to
ease bin conscience by giving half hi*
illgotten gains to a college. The
beat and light made by that oil
should all he concentrated in one
blaze and John placed jn the midst o:
it when he departs for that unknown
land. The man who would rob the
poor in a disguised manner is no bet
ter t ban a highway man and the hot
test place in the infernal regions is
too cool for his icy soul.

The Htate legislature meets today
It will be in session forty days. If
this body could frame some law to
compel each county to build good
roads it would go down in history as
the one legislature in a century that
had attempted to do something for
tho people. It » most nonsensical
proceeding to send a crowd of men to
Columbia who have no higher ambi
tion than to play petty politics and
appoint a few of their supporters to
minor offices. Of course these offices
mu.t be lilled, since they are created,
but our legislators should aspire to
soinethit g grander and nobler than
the mere tilling of an office. Obser
vation has taught us that the average
man is spoiled 'or life when be re-
ceives a little political appointment.
He generally gets the. big head and,
believing that there is a great respon
sibility resting upon his shoulder*
and that his popularity is in the as
cendency. he presumes too much and
consequently become* worthless to
himself and anybody else. But it is
useless to discuss these matters, In-
cause it seems that they will imv. r
be changed. Nevertheless there L a
satisfaction in pointing out now and
then the follies and frivolities (f
county politics.

Several weeks ago The Ledger sug
gested that it would doubtless prove
profitable to undertake tobacco cul-
ture In this and surrounding counties. ]
