SHORT LOCAL ITEMS.
The ClemeoD boya all went back to
college Saturday.
The county registrars were in their
office yesterday for business.
It rained all day Friday and the
streams were much swollen.
Magistrate A. J McCraw, of Grassy
Pond, was a city visitor Saturday.
All the graded schools in the city
opened for the new year yesterday.
The county commissioners met yes-1
terday and transacted much routine
business.
Mr. M. I. Shelor, of Bessemer City,
has taken charge of the Southern de
pot here.
The Postal Telegragh Company is
putting up its wires and will soon
open an office in Gaffney.
Limestone College girls came in in
large numbers ou all trains yesterday.
The college has resumed work.
{ The county chaingang is iu its
winter quarters on the county farm.
It now has seventeen convicts on it.
The Epworth League council of the
Buford Street Methodist church will
meet at the parsonage Friday at 7:30
p. m.
W. J. Sarratt, representative-elect
of Sarratts, spent some time in the
city last week with his sisters, on
Limestone street.
Mr. Charles Pearson and Miss Mit-
tie Pearson, both of Cleveland county,
N. C., were married on January 1st,
by Magistrate A. J. McCraw at his
home.
Saturday morning the sun came out
bright and the day was fine through
out. Quite a good crowd was in the
city and business began to assume its
normal conditions.
There will be preaching in Lime
stone Street Methodist church next
Sunday at 11 a. m., and 7 p. m , by
the pastor, J. B. Wilson. All are
cordially invited to attend.
Cards were received here yesterday
announcing the coming marriage at
Glendale on Thursday, January 15th.,
of Miss Laura Harper to Mr. A. B.
Phillips, formerly of Gaffney.
The trustees of Gaffney graded
school district held a meeting Friday
□igbt and elected Mr. R. M. Gaffney
a trustee to fill the vacancy caused
by the death of Mr. L. G. Byars.
Mr. F. N. Moore, of Cowpens, and
Miss Lillie Davis, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. L. B. Davis, this county,
were married at the home of the
bride’s parents on the 28th of Decem
ber 1908, by Rev. A. D. Davidson.
Ed. H. Gaines, long the popular
traveling salesman of the R. J. Rey
nolds Tobacco Company, has rented
office rooms io the Star Theatre build
ing where he will establish the head
quarters office of that company iu
South Carolina.
At a meeting of the city council
Friday night, A. L. Hallman was
elected a city policeman to fill the
vacancy caused by the resignation of
policeman Gaffney. Officer Hall
man has served on the force before
with credit to both the city and him
self, and will again make a good
officer.
Twelve members of the force em
ployed by the Postal Telegraph Com
pany in erecting telegraph poles and
wires in this county were arrested by
Sheriff Thomas and Deputy B. S.
Lipscomb yesterday and placed in jail
on a warrant sworn out by F. G.
Stacy and W. Carpenter for unlaw
fully entering upon their lands. They
were subsequeutly released on bond
to appear Thursday before Magistrate
Phillips for trial.

be held in their hall this Tuesday
