NOTES AND COMMENTS.
An exibition of our county products
next year need not be attended with
great expense. Let our farmers noeet
and lay the plan. They know how to
make them work and all will be as
tonished next fall to see what Chero
kee can do.

Our people may now prepare for
some practical lessons on the neces
sity of good roads. Winter Is upon
us and no season of the year brings
this fact so close home. Every time
your wagon or buggy gets in the rut
or mud-hole remember that the only
remedy is better roads.
The union revial meeting has come
to a close. There is no calculating
the good it has accomplished. No
doubt the impressions made on the
minds of those who attended will last
as long as life itself. Dr. Broughton
is engaged in a noble work and surely
his reward will be great.
The most valuable citizens in a
community are those who do some
thing. The fellows who loaf half
their time and spend what little they
do make at the dispensary or with
the blind tiger are of no value to any
community. We have mighty little
patience and no respect at all for a
loafer. They are generally in the
way of those who want to do some
thing.

A number of the eastern counties
of the State, actuated by the appeals
and assistance of the News and Cour
ier twentyjyears ago, are making for
tunes raising tobacco. Other sec
tions of the State have been success
fully experimenting with it, and now
we see that Laurens county will try
it next year. Laurens is one of the
best farming counties in the State and
her farmers have always been leaders
in their profession, and they will suc
ceed with tobacco. Cherokee is an
up-to-date county in all lines of pro
gress and judging from the success of
her farmers in the old beaten ways
we feel sure that they can grow to
bacco successfully and profitably.
Who will try it in 1903.

Mr. /. H. Tate, of Mississippi, is
in this county visiting relatives. Mr.
Tate called at The Ledger office the
other day and asked to see the man
who was always booming GalTney and
Cherokee. After being introduced he
took occasion to say that the editor
of his county paper had given up the
task of booming his county in dis
gust, saying that he was tired of
lying for the benefit of others, espe-
cia'ly when others did not show their
appreciation of his lying. Perhaps it
does sound a little like bragging too
much when one away from Gaffney
reads The Ledger, but we wish to
assure Mr. Tate and all others who
may be skeptical about progressive
Gaffney that we never make a state
ment about the growtb of this town
and county that is not strictly true.
Every man employed on this news
paper has positive instructions to te l
the truth at all times, and not to
exaggerate in the least, and to never
say that anything is going to be done
until the plans are perfected and the
project is assured. It is a pleasure
for us to chronicle the growth of Gaff
ney but we have no desire to do so at
the expense of truth. There is quite
a difference in booming a town and
county when they possess something
to boom than in trying to boom it
when it is as dead as a door nail.
The mistake that many county news
papers make is taking too much for
granted. Just at this time we are in
possession of information of two en
terprises that are on foot in this
county that mean much for its de-
velopement, but the plans are not
yet complete and we cannot give de
tails. To do so would be a breech of
trust. Besides, these plans may not
mature. In that case we would be
untruthfully booming things. This
we prefer not to do. You may rest
assured that anything you see in The
Ledger is absolutely true.

Showing Her Faith.
A little seven year old who had
been attending the Broughton meet
ings very regularly was much dis
tressed at the anxiety of her mother
on Thanksgiving day because of the
delay of the old colored Mammy in
not turning up with the turkey at
the proper time. It seems that
mother bad given the turkey to the
cook the day before to take home
with her for the purpose of prepar
ing it for the oven and she was some
what late in arriving with it, therefore
mother was terribly distressed, be
cause she had invited company to be
present and partake of the turkey.
Noticing mother’s distress the little
one crept off into a corner and began
to pray for the cook to come. She
had just finished her devotion and
said to her mother: ‘'Mamma, don’t
worry, I’s prayed to God for Aunt
Katy to come with the turkey and I
know she’ll come, for God always
answers prayer.” About that time
they looked out the door and sure
enough Aunt Katy was approaching
the home with the turkey all ready
for the oven. Thus the prayer of
the faithful little tot was answered.
We Need a New Depot.
With the change of agents at the
Southern depot a change of depots
would be a creditable move. That
thirty-year-old board building is no
longer the thing, right In the center
of an up-to-date and progressive city
like Gaffney. We hope our business
men will move in the matter, and
try to induce the Southern people to
build a new depot that is commen
surate with the character and volume
of business done here.

On Saturday, Dec. 13th, the dis
tinguished actress, Mrs .LeMoyne,
will be seen in this city at the Star
Theatre in her latest successful com
edy, ‘‘Among Those Present.” This
promises to be the most notable
event of the present theatrical sea
son. Sale of seats will commence on
Friday, Dec. 12tb. Prices f>0 cents
to $1 50. On account of the interest
manifiested In Mrs. LeMoyne’s ap
pearance, and the large number of
inquiries already made at the box
office, it has been decided that appli
cations for seats sent in before the
DUpeuanry In New Ouarterg.
The dispensary has been moved
and the place on Granard street that
has enjoyed its grSat moral influen
ces! for so long will enjoy them no
more. This great centre of State
beneficence has been transferred to
the new Curry building on Limestone
street, where old fashion jugs are on
tap and will be disposed of to old fash
ion and new fashion “jaggers” under
State supervision.
Thankg Offering.
At the union Thanksgiving service
at the Star Theatre Thursday a
thanks offering of $140 was given,
which has been equally divided be
tween the Connie Maxwell orphanage
at Greenwood, the Thornwell orphan
age at Clinton and the Epworth or
phanage at Columbia
