Interesting Items Concerning Our Neigh
bors Beyond the Line Which May Prove
Entertaining Reading for Hundreds of
Ledger Readers.
Three sheriffs Wednesday brought
convicts to the penitentiary—Over
man two from Pasquotank (one, a ne
gro, to serve 20 years for wife-mur
der) Bond one from Bertie, and Woot
en six from Lenoir.
A charter was Monday granted the
Alleghany Land and Lumber Com
pany, of Asheville, capital $20,000.
A. W. King and his wife, of Williams
port, Pa., and Henry P. Stevens, of
Asheville, are the stockholders.
Perry Ingram, colored, of Hamlet,
was shot in the 'back just above the
hip Wednesday afternoon by Mr. H.
E. Gibbon. The shooting was acci
dental. Mr. Gibbon was shooting at
pigeons in his garden with a 22-cali
bre rifle when a glancing bullet, it is
supposed, hit Ingram, who was two
hundred yards away. The doctor who
attended Ingram states that the
wound may prove to be a very serious
one.
C. Ingle, a white man about Uo years
of age, was killed Monday morning
at his home several miles west of
Emma postoffice, by a falling tree.
Ingle was working at the time in a
wood land and a big tree had just
been chopped down, which had fallen
upon a smaller tree and remained in
that position in the air. Ingle under
took to chop down the smaller tree,
when he was felled by the big tree.
He died a short time afterward.
Sunday night a brakeman on the
Western North Carolina Railroad
named L. B. Robinson was discovered
unconscious on a freight train at
Newton. The supposition is that his
head was struck at the overhead
bridge at Newton or at the water
tank. He was brought to Statesville
and Dr. Thos E. Anderson, surgeon
for the road, dressed the wounds and
Robinson was able to go to his home
at Asheville the next morning.
A tobacco warehouse company has
been organized in Wilmington. One
of its chief objects is to promote the
cultivation of tobacco in the country
immediately tributary to Wilming
ton, and in order to encourage the
farmers living within one hundred
ftiiles of Wilmington to plant tobacco,
the company will employ an expert
tobacco man to teach the farmers how
to prepare the beds for the plants,
how to fertilize the lands, how to cul
tivate the crop, and bow «to harvest
and cure it.
A colored disciple of the late Jesse
James held up two nurses attached
to the staff of the Riverside Infir
mary about 11 o’clock Monday night
in Charlotte and robbed them of a
pocketbook and a gold watch. The
ladies were halted at the corner of
Ashley avenue aud Calhoun street
and ordered by the negro to band over
their valuables. He flourished no
weapon, but bis demeanor was men
acing. Too frightened to give him an
inattentive hearing, the ladies surren
dered the articles mentioned. The
pocketbook contained several dollars.
The Inter-State commerce commis
sion convened in Charlotte Monday
morning to bear the complaints of
the Charlotte Shippers’ Association
against the Southern and Seaboard
Air Line Railway companies on the
charge of discriminating against
Charlotte in freight rates. The presid
ing judges are the Hon. Judson C.
Clements, of Georgia; the Hon. Char
les A. Prouty, of Vermont, and the
Hon. Joseph W. Phifer, of Illinois.
The hearing of the testimony of Char
lotte witnesses was concluded at 5
o’clock iu the afternoon, and Col. Ed
Baxter, of Nashville, representing the
railroads, at once began the exam!
nation of witnesses for the two com
panies, Freight Traffic Manager T. C.
Powell, of the Southern, being placed
on the stand.
George S. Pritchard, Jr , of Golds
boro, aged IK years, was seriously
shot in the right shoulder Saturday
afternoou by Frank Caster, Jr. George
and Frank with other companions
went to the north of the city limits,
where the boys have a camp and play
“Indian.” A gun was brought into
camp, supposed by Frank not to be
loaded. With this weapon the shoot
ing was done. Approaching the camp
George was held np by Frank and
ordered to stop. When within a few
feet of the uplifted gun Isador Meyer-
bnrg, one of the boye present, cried
to Frank that the goo was loaded.
Frank turned bis head to aeeertain
what the Meyerbnrg boy said aad as
’he did so his fioger touched the trig
ger and bang went the g»n, the load
of bird shot entering the shoulder of
George. The wonnd is an ugly ene
and while the arm may be saved rt is
held that it can only be used for side
movements.
A negro named Albert Shonse wae
arrested early Sunday morning at his
home near the chemical' factory, ia
Winston-Salem, on the charge of at
tempting a criminal aesault upon Mrs.
John Bottom, who resides in Old Town
township. Sbouse and his toother
were carried before Mrs. Bottom by
Deputy Sheriffs Thompsonand Hutch
ins and she identified the first named
as being the negro who came to her
home on Saturday and attempted to
assault her. Mrs. Bottom states that
she and her little children were alone ;
her husband was in the field at work;
that Sbouse did not take hold of her,
but she is confident that he intended
to and would have done so had she
not screamed and called for her hus
band. Sbouse at first denied the
charge against him, but later stated
that be was drinking and did not know
what he did He was committed to
jail until 2 o’clock Monday afternoon,
then he was given a hearing before
Justices Lehman and Robinson. At
the trial Mrs. Bottom testified that
Sbouse ran her from the yard into the
house and out into the yard again.
Sbouse was bound over to the Febru
ary term of Superior Court in a bond
of $500.
