Early In my professional career I realised that Chronic Diseases were not beintf Riven the
attention which their Importance warranted. 1 saw that these diseases required a special fit

Thousands of Horses, Cattle and Oth

Rich Coffee Districts of Republic
Are Ruined.
San Francisco, Nov. 13.—The Pa
cific mail steamer Newport, which ir-
rived from Ccuitral America, has
brought details of the eruption of t’.v
volcano of Santa Maria, which gprea 1
ruin over a section of ' orthern Gau
temala on Oct. 22. A •..•cs brought
by the Newport show that Gautemaia
is using every effort to suppress the
facts concerning the eruption and to
minimize the amount of damage.
The news brought by the Newport
amounts to almost a positive proof
that many lives were lost as a result
of the fajl of ashes from the volcano:
that thousands of horses, cattle and
other animals were killed, and that
the rich coffee districts of the repub
lic are ruined.
It is reported that the loss of the
new crop of coffee will amount to
300,000 centals, or 15,000 tons.
Some of the finest and most expen
sive plantations in Gautemaia are en
tirely ruined and the rate of exchange
has risen to 1200 per rent. Roads and
bridges leac>»ng Inland from Chemper
ico were ruined by the weight . f
ashes, mud and stones falling from
great heights.
Some of those on the Newport said
that fully a thousand persons perisn-
ed in the upheaval.

Roosevelt May Make It Disagreeable
For Some of Them.
Birmingham, Ala., Nov. 13.—'Re
ports seem to indicate that President
Roosevelt is going to make it disa
greeable for the Democratic office
holders whom he has appointed in
Alabama, in Hen of Republicans, by
insisting on their giving some good
fat clerkships to negroes. In thD
way the president would still further
emphasize his opposition to the lilv
white movement in Alabama, and
gratify the eastern Republicans wh.i
are bidding for the negro voters in
their state by influencing the admin
istration to pat the negro on the ba< k
and punish the white republicans who
have ostracized them from the party
councils. It is understood that the
chief clerk in the office of the inte.’-
nel revenue collector here will he a
negro, and also that positions of au
thority will he given negroes in oth

occur.
