Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Kirby, out on North Limestone street, had snap beans for dinner yesterday. They gathered them from their own garden. Mr. Junius H. Blanton, of this county, and Miss Annie M. Sarratt, of Slices Shoals, N. C., were married in this city on the 16th inst., by Rev. W. T. Thompson. Mr. Sumter Littlejohn came at Mr. Blalock again Wednesday, this time with a twelve pound and seven ounce turnip It also had the top on it. The turnip looks some larger than Mr. Blalock’s eight pounder. The many friends, in and out of 1 the city, of Rev. and Mrs. W. EFFORTS TO SUPPRESS FACTS. * Thousands of Horses, Cattle and Oth er Animals Were Killed and the Rich Coffee Districts of Republic Are Ruined. San Francisco, Nov. 13.—The Pa cific mail steamer Newport, which ir- rived from Ccuitral America, has brought details of the eruption of t’.v volcano of Santa Maria, which gprea 1 ruin over a section of ' orthern Gau temala on Oct. 22. A •..•cs brought by the Newport show that Gautemaia is using every effort to suppress the facts concerning the eruption and to minimize the amount of damage. The news brought by the Newport amounts to almost a positive proof that many lives were lost as a result of the fajl of ashes from the volcano: that thousands of horses, cattle and other animals were killed, and that the rich coffee districts of the repub lic are ruined. It is reported that the loss of the new crop of coffee will amount to 300,000 centals, or 15,000 tons. Some of the finest and most expen sive plantations in Gautemaia are en tirely ruined and the rate of exchange has risen to 1200 per rent. Some of those on the Newport said that fully a thousand persons perisn- ed in the upheaval. OFFICEHOLDERS ARE SHAKY. • ——————— Roosevelt May Make It Disagreeable For Some of Them. Birmingham, Ala., Nov. 13.—'Re ports seem to indicate that President Roosevelt is going to make it disa greeable for the Democratic office holders whom he has appointed in Alabama, in Hen of Republicans, by insisting on their giving some good fat clerkships to negroes. In thD way the president would still further emphasize his opposition to the lilv white movement in Alabama, and gratify the eastern Republicans wh.i are bidding for the negro voters in their state by influencing the admin istration to pat the negro on the ba< k and punish the white republicans who have ostracized them from the party councils. It is understood that the chief clerk in the office of the inte.’- nel revenue collector here will he a negro, and also that positions of au thority will he given negroes in oth er offices where removals are apt to occur. ALABAMA VETS MEET. Two Thousand War Heroes Capture Montgomery. Montgomery. Ala., Nov. 13.—The ho. tel and hoarding house accommoda tions of Montgomery aie severely tav. cd to entertain the visitors who a ’ here to attend the third annual reun ion of the Alabama division of th* United Confederate Veterans. Both the first and second reunions were held here, but neither was to be com pared to this. The indications now are that moip than two thousand vet erans were In the parade today, rot counting the Sons of Veterans, seven hundred strong. Two bands are In attendance and the main streets are alive with bunt ing and confederate flags and colors are distdayed at every point of van tage. The weather Is simply perfect, and nothing is lacking to make the reunion a complete success. NEW DAILY TO BE STARTED. Republicans Will Launch One at Bir mingham Jan. 1. Birmingham, Ala., Nov. 13.—It :s announced that on January 1, 1903, a Republican daily newspaper will be established here, which will print a mofning and afternoon edition. The statement is that $100,000 will be invested in the venture at the out set, and that J. Carter Cook, the chair man of the Republican campaign com mittee in the last election, will have general control of the management and policy of the paper, although he will not assume the responsibility of editing it. Mr. Cook Is a young law yer, who recently came here from Georgia, and has taken an enviable position at the local bar. It Is believ ed by the projectors that the newspa per, on account of itg tariff policy, will receive the support of the manufact uring concerns of the district Nicaraguan Ports Quarantine. Managua. Nicaragua, Nov. 13.— President Zelaya has issued a decree declaring Nicaragua’s Atlantic ports to be quarantined against vessels from Colon. Colombia; Bocas del Toro, Co lombia, and Port Llmon, Costa Rica, because of the outbreak of yellow fiver there. Next Session at Birmingham.
