A dainty evening waist is in black
net over white with trimming of black j
and white lace. Full waists finished ,
with berthas at the low necks are al* |
ways charming and becoming for
evening wear. The bertha falls in
soft becoming ripples without un
gainly fullnfes and gives the long
shouldered effect demanded by fash- ;
ion. The plaid suits are stylish '
trimmed with braid or stitched bands
of a plain color. Velvet is to be
used a great deal this season for
gowns, coats, waists and trimmings;
both the plain and fancy velvets will
be used. The large white pearl but
ton will be used on the winter shirt
waist.

Springs, spent a few days this week

Miss Ray Macomson, of Wilkins-
ville, was shopping in the city this

Mrs. A. 0. Oree left Wednesday for

Mrs. Blanton, af.er a pleasant visit
to Mrs. W. C. Hamrick, has returned
to her home in Shelby.
Mrs. Tripp, of Biacksburg, spent a
few days in the city.
Miss Hattie Wyle, of Buffalo, vis
ited friends in our city this week.
Mrs. Jones, of Blacksburg, was in
the city this week shopping.
Miss Rigsby, of Durham, N. C.,
and Miss Volina Hamrick have gone
to Greenwood to attend the marriage
of Miss Susie Durst.

The slate roof on the city hail has

Governor McSweeney has refused to
pardon Obe Barker, of this county,
who was convicted here last June of
murder, and sentenced to life-im
prisonment.
We are requested by some of our
worthy carpenters to express their
thanks to The Battery for the splen

J. N. Lipscomb’s handsome new

streets, is nearing completiou and
when finished will be one of the hand
somest in the city.
Leila Shaw, who plays Clementine
in “The Man From Mexico”, is meet
ing with uncommon success. Her
Spanish dance is on£ of the special
features of the show.
In our notice of the decision of
Judge Brawley in the case of J. D.
Jones in bankruptcy in our last issue,
we omitted to mention Messrs. Hall &
Willis as appearing for claimants.
The work on the Smith Hardware
Company’s block on Granard street
is progressing well. When com
pleted it will be a handsome struc
ture and an ornament to tbe city.
Oscar Smith, colored, alias “Buz
zard,” who has been on tbe ebain-
gang in Charlotte, N. C , returned to
Gaffney Tuesday and says “when you
get on the Mecklenburg gang, you
sho got a job ”
Tbe county obaingang moved from
tbe east side of Broad river Monday
and is now camped near Cherokee
Ford. Capt. Camp 1b taking advant
age of tbe fine weather and is said to
be doing some fine road work.
The many frienda in Gaffney of
Capt. Joaepb F. Gregory, of Lancas
ter, are pleased to learn of his ap
pointment as Clerk of Court of Lan
caster county. Capt. Gregory’s
temporary stay in Gaffney made him
many friends here, who know him to
be competent and worthy.

Act which Senator Tillman succeeded
in having passed declares that tneee
old payments shall first he applied to
the settlement of ten or fifteen years’
interest, which had accrued at that
time, while any amount remaining
unpaid at that tune shall be deemed
a new principal, upon which interest
must now be paid.
It is impossible to determine what
tiiis will amount to w thout a'-cess to
the da'e ; f these payments and the
original accounts Senator Tillman’s
computation fixed the amount at
abou f . $800 000, which should give
South Carolina between $,'>0 000 and
$75 000, after settling in full the
South Carolina bonds held by tbe In
dian trust fund of the Federal Govern
ment. These bonds aggregate $125.-
000 at their full value, and under the
bond redemption laws ot South Caro
lina were refundable at 50 cents on
the dollar into the new *4 1-2 per
cents. The United States refused
this settlement and demanded full
face value, repeatedly threatening
suits upon them. Thus, after paying
full face value and accrued interest,
there is a promise not only of wiping
out over $100,000 of the value debt
of the State, but of securing quite a
nice sum to tbe State treasury besides.
No commission will be paid to any
one in settlement of the claim, and
the btute will get every dollar secur
ed. Senator Tillman made this a
condition of his work for tbe measure
and tbe results vindicate his ju.ig
ment.
There are other valid claims against
Uncle Sam, which would run up hi
debt to this State to nearly two mil
lion dollars if interest should be ul-
4-.wed to tbe present time, and it is
hoped that Senator Tillman and the
Representatives will continue their
efforts for the settlemeut of me
cla.ms in full.
