One Hundred .Graves Supposed -to
Have Been Despoiled In Last Throe
Months—Negro Is Confessed Lead

Indianapolis, Oct. 13.—Pour dead
bodies were lound tied in sacks in
Georgia street and in the rear of the
Central college of physicians and sur
geons this morning.
The bodies were identified as those
of Mrs. Johanna Stilz, stolen from the
Ebenesor cemetery; Miss Glendore
Gates, stolen from Anderson cemetery;
Wallace Johnson, stolen from Ebenez-
so* cemetery, and Mrs. Catherine Doeh-
ring, stolen from the German Catholic
cemetery. All these cemeteries are
near the oity line.
About 6 o’clock this morning bicycle
patrolmen were sent to Meridian and
Georgia streets on a telephone mes
sage that there were bodies there.
When the police arrived they were di
rected to a dry goods box on the side
walk in Georgia street opposite a
wholesale dry goods store. On the
top of the box, in a sitting posture,
was a body tied in a sack. The
form could be plainly seen.. It was
identified as that of Mrs. Stiltz. The
patrolmen looked in the l-ox and
found another body, also tied in a sac a.
The city dispenwaiy ambulance was
called ar:«l the bodies wine f.ent to
the moi ue. A young nan who tele
phoned tor the police was still theie,
and he told the point teat while on
his way to work, in pns dng the rear
end of the Central tcilege of Physi
cians and Surgeons, ir South Pennsyl
vania street, he noticed two sacks fill
ed with something lying near the rear
door of the c oilege. When he walk
ed inrto Georgia street and saw the
body sitting on the dry goods box he
realized that the sacks in the rear of
the college probably contained bodies.
Officers hurried to the Central col
lege building and took charge of the
bodies lying in the alley. Each was
tied securely in a sack. When the j
sacks were cut open it was found that
they contained the bodies of Miss
Gates and Wallace Johnson.
The finding of the bodies is thought
to be due to the efforts of detectives,
who, for several days, have been talk
ing with physicians not connected with
any of the colleges to use their influ
ence in having the stolen bodiee re
turned to the relatives.
Seventeen persons are now under
arrest for grave robbing, including
nine negroe*. three white doctors, one
negro undertaker, a proprietor of a
cemetery, two night watchmen ait a
cemetery and a night watchman. It
ie supposed at least 100 graves have
been deepoiled within the last three
months. Rufus Oantrill, a negro, is
the confessed leader of the gang.
Judge Alford, in hi* instructions io
the grand Jury today, told them to go
to the bottom of the outrage and pun-
t*h every man for his part In it, re
gard lees of his prominence.
CALLED FROM HOUSE AND SHOT.
Notorious Gang of Postoffice Robbers
Has Been Arrested.
Los Angeles, Cal., Oct. 13.—When,
on Oct 3 officers took into custody
William Eller, alias Joe Seider, and
alias Thomas- Keegan; O. J. Melville,
alias Morrissey and M. E. Vinson, ac
cused of robbing small postofficea In
various parts of southern California,
they realized- that they had made a
big catch.
The real importance of the capture
has just been made known. The gang
is one known to the police throughout
the United States. There is a stand
ing reward of $800 for the return of
all the members to Toledo, O., some of
whom are wanted in Virginia and
others in New England. The al
leged leader of the gang, Joseph Rap-
ley, aJias Topeka Joe, made hi® escape
ait the time the others were arrested.
NEGROES TRIED TO LYNCH HIM.
Lloyd Nelson, White Farmer, Killed
Negro Woman with an Ax.
Hopkinsville, Ky., Oct. 13.—Lloyd
Nelson Young, a white planter, crazed
with drink, went to Pembroke and got
on a rampage Saturday night, after
being put off a train that he had
flagged.
He secured an ax and brained Re-
L- xica McRay, an aged negross, whom
met in the road. Leaving the ax
with the body, he sprang on Joseph
Landy, colored, aged 70, and cut his
throat, fatally wounding him. After
terrorizing the citizens for two hours
be was overpowered by a posse and
brought x.ere for safe-keeping Sun
day to escape a mob of several hun
dred negioee that had been formed
to lynch him.

Louisville, Go., Oat. 13.—Now# has

Hempstead, Tex., Wrought Up Over
Mysterious Killing.
Hempstead, Tex., Oct. 13.—Mrs.
Sue-an P. Lewis, aged 64, was mur
dered by some unknown person, and
the whole community is much
wrought up.
She was heard to scream and call
for help, and Chen three shots were
fined In rapid succession. A search
was at once made, and the body of the
woman, clad only jn a night dress,
was found in the rear of the public
school building some 60 yards away
from her home. Two suspects are
betirng held.
Sale of Mills Not Confirmed.
Macon, Ga., Oct. 13.—Judge Emory
Speer, of the United States court,
has issued an order refusing to con
firm the recent sale of the cotton mills
at Millen and Tennille on the ground
ti.-at the amounts were to small. Re
ceiver John R. L. Smith sold the Mil
len rvoperty at $50,000. The plant
cost $160,000. Judge Speer now
places an upset price of $90,000 on
this mill. Receiver N. B. Colvin sold
the Tennille cotton mills at $40,000.
The plant cost $112,000. Judge Speer
names an upset price of $75,000. The
properties will again be offered for
sale.
Russell Sage 86 Years Old.
New York, Oct. 13.—Reports are
current that Russell Sage, the famous
financier, whose health ha* been not
of the best recently, has decided to
curtail somewhat hi* business activi
ties at the earnest solicitation of his
friends. He is now 86 years old. He
uas, it is stated, so systematize 1 his
vast interests that they will not require
hds constant attention. His health is
reported' to be steadily improving.

Stores Consolidation Formed.
Savannah, Ga., Oct. 13.—The organ
izers of the Florida Export company,
closely allied with the Consolidated
Naval Stores company, held a confer
ence here Saturday, when plans were
definitely formulated for the organi-
ration.
Material changes were made in the
tentative plans of the comiwmy, as
formed at Jacksonville some days ago.
For one thing, it was decided to in
crease the capital stock from $200,000
to $600,00.
A general export business in naval
stores will be done. Tne officers
will be W. F. Coachman, Jacksonville,
president; John R. Young, Savannah,
vice president; W. F. Coachman, John
R. Young, H. L. Covin;:ton, Pensacola;
E. C. Patterson, Jacksonville, and VV.
C. Powell, Savannah, directors.
The company will J)e ready for bus
iness on January 1. The headquar
ters will be in Jacksonville, with tho
principal branch office here.
CRUSHED UNDER ENGINE.
L. M. Laramore Falls In Front of Lo
comotive at Savannah.
Savannah, Ga., Oct. 13.—L. M. Lara
more, white, 23 yers old, a brakeman
on the Seaboard Air Line, was killed
by an engine at the Junction near this
city Sunday morning.
He was riding on the pilot, from
which he jumped to mane a connec
tion. Tripping, he fell, and the
wheels of the engine passed over both
legs, severing them completely. He
was placed aboard the engine, with
life almost extinct, and speed was
made to the city. The police ambu
lance was summoned and he wae con
veyed to the hospital. He died, how
ever, within 5 minutes after reaching
the hospital. His home was at Les
lie, near Americus.
