AMERICAN SCHOONER CAPTURED.
She Is Towed Into Port by a Cuban
Revenue Cutter.
New York, Oct. 6.—One of Cuba's
tiny revenue cutters, the Abjorro, has
towed into this port the American
schooner Champion, of Key West, Fla.,
which was captured at Los Arroyos,
in the western.end of the island, says
a Havana dispatch to The World.
The Champion had been out 35
days, was bound for Batabano, not
more than a week’s voyage distant,
and when captured had only covered
half the distance. It is believed a
cargo was secretly landed at Arroyos.
Aboard the vessel is said to have been
found tackle for catching turtle and
a large quantity of dynamite, whicn
was to have been used to destory two
large wrecked- vessels near Arroyos.
These would have yielded a large re
turn of brass and copper.
The captured vessel Is manned by
negroes from Nassau, all of whom aro
now under guard on their vessel at the
arsenal in this city.

Opportunltli-M of Many Kindi Between
Camden and Marlon.
We are indebted to our young
friend, Sam Strain, of Etta Jane, for
the following article taken from the
“Southern Farm Magazine,” which
will be of interest to a majority of
our readers:
“On July 1, 1902, the railroad for
merly known as the South Carolina &
Georgia Extension Railroad became a
part of the Southern Railway system.
It extends from Camden, 8. C., to
Marion, N. C., with a short branch
from Blacksburg to Gaffney, S. C.,
the aggregate length being 1(53 miles.
The line extends virtually from the
mountains to the border of the
coastal plain, and passes through
quite a variety of country.
“In South Carolina it traverses
Kershaw, Lancaster, York and Cher
okee counties, and in North Carolina
Cleveland, Rutherford and McDowell
counties, each of which jpossesses re
sources of merit and advantages
worthy of consideration and develop
ment.
“Most of Cherokee county is in
what is known as the Alpine section
of the state, which is a rolling table
land, broken and hilly on the margin
of the streams, but scarcely anywhere
inaccessible to the plow, the general
elevation above sea level being from
1,000 to 1,500 feet. The soils are
produced by the decomposition of
gneiss rock, and may be found as a
gray sandy loam, with a red and
sometimes a white clay on the level
and a stiff red clay soil on the hill
side . The bottom lands have a dark
loam, which is very productive of
corn, grain and grass. The leading
places are Gaffney, Blacksburg and
Cherokee Falls. At Cherokee Falls
there is a large cotton mill.
“Blacksburg has a population of
about 2,000. It is quite a manufac
turing town, having a -fTo.OOO ferti
lizer factory, a .lioO.OOO sulphuric acid
plant, a machine shop, lime works,
roller flour mill, hosiery mill and cot
ton seed oil mill. Near the town are
iron ore and manganese deposits.
During the pest year a $25,000 bank
was established, the hosiery mill
completed and placed in operation,
as well as the cotton seed oil mill.
More than $10,000 was spent during
the year in residence improvements.
Gaffney, which is the terminus of a
ten-mile branch of this division, run
ning from Blacksburg, and is also on
the main line of the Southern Rail
way. has a population of about OOJO.
It has a number of prosperous and
growing industries, the more impor
tant being the cotton mills of the
Gaffney Manufacturing Co. and the
Limestone Manufacturing Co., capi
tal $1,000,000 and $225,000, respect
ively; a cottonseed oil mill, foun
dry, lime works, roller flour mill,
carpet factory and cotton mill supply
factory.
The town has two good banks,
good schools and mercantile houses.
Most of these industries are the de
velopments of the past two years.
The Gaffney Manufacturing Co. is
now building a large finishing plant.
Last year $200,000 was spent by the
citizens in new residences and other
buildings. This town is a good
location for new industries ”

FLAW PICKER ON
THE FEMALE WOMAN
He and the Parson Have a
Lively Discussion.
WOMEN OF BIBLE TIMES*
Tlie rnrson Suvs tliiit » Good Woman is tlie
HtiMt Tiling; on Earth and a Mean one the
Worst —The Effect of Their Uressin’s and
Fix in’s on Men.
(Correspondence of The Ledger.)
Coalin’ Ground, Oct. 3.—“Flaw,
it’s a feloniously dead certainty that
I’ve got it in for you now,” said the
Parson t’other day—the first time I
met him since I wrote that there
piece on “The Greatest Gift of God to
Man,” a bearin’ on the female women
sext.
“Of course, Flaw,” he opened forth
his mouth an’ went on down to say,
“I will agree with you that there are
some bad women in the world, even
up to this day an’ time, but that’s no
reason why you should jump on the
whole push.
“Now, there’s Lot’s wife for nin-
stant: ‘As you make your bed so
will you lie,’ the good book says.
She chose to make her bed a hard one
for we learn that she lay with her bead
on a pillow of salt. If she had made
that there pillow for poor ole Lot in
stead of sleepin on it herself you
meby meught of called her a mean
woman.
“An’, Flaw, there’s Ruth, an’ Na
omi, an’ Hagar, an’ Rebtkah, an’ a
whole passel more rale good women
we read about in the good book. We
learn in there that after seven devils
were cast out of another woman she
turned out to be a rale good woman,
too, but the majority of our women
of today, Flaw, don’t need no devils
cast out for they are good enough as
they are—good enough for me at any
rates.
“Now. Flaw, don’t think that I’m
a takin’ up for all women. Taae Poi-
iphar’s wife for ninstant: Such wo
men as she was is raley dangersome.
If they can’t git you in trouble one
way they will another. An’ Flaw,
that reminds me of what you have
said, that a rale mean woman is the
meanest piece of God’s creation, but
I do bleeve that they are few an’ scat
terin'. Now, there was Tamar; she
would of bin called a bad woman in
our day an’ time but when ole Judah
saw what a fool she had made of him
he said she was more righteous than
he, an’ this, Flaw, bears out another
one of your sayin’s, that a woman can
lead a man to the jumpin’ off place
an’make him jump off first. You see
how cunnin’ Tamar was, to throw off
her widow’s garments and put on her
veil an’ other flxments to deceive ole
Judah. 1 tell you what’s a dyin’ fact,
Flaw, fine dressin’ an’ fancy fixments
on a woman is calculated to make
any man of this day an’ time lose his
head—but it didn’t seem to have any
effect on ole fool Joseph.
“Talkin’ about treachersome an’
deceivin’ women, Flaw, look there at
Sarah, what a fool she was about to
make of ole Abimelech until the Lord
got in behind both of ’em. Look
what a predicament ole Lot’s two
daughters got him into! why, they
actiaily made him drunk as a fiddler’s
puppy for two nights baud ruunin’.
“Now Sarah was a good woman I
raley do bleeve, Flaw, for she lived to
be a hundred and twenty-seven years
old, an' I don’t bleeve she would ever
of got into that mixup with ole Abi
melech if it hadn't a bin for ole Abra
ham. Such a man as him wouldn’t
git very much countenance from re
spectable people of these days, hut he
was highcockalorum in his day an’
time. Guess the Lord thought ‘with
all his faults I love him still,’ as the
song goes.
“There’s Rehekah ; T raley do bleeve
that she was as sweet a gal as ever
lived in them days, although she went
off with a man’s servant (meby
mought a bin a nigger fer all I know)
to meet an’ marry Isaac, a pluperfect
stranger to her. If a gal would cut
such a caper in this day an’ genera
tion the papers would be full of it.
The reason why I say she was a sweet
gal is because we learn in the good
book that Isaac loved her on first
sight, an’ that she was fair to look
upon, but she, too, got into the de
ceivin’ business after so long a time
an’ caused Jacob to swindle Esau out
of his blessin’, an’ the scoun’l bad to
leave hocne on the strength of it.
But, Flaw, there’s oodlins an’ ood-
lins of gals what are rale good women
an’ you shouldn’t orter be so hard
down on ’em.
“Well, Parson,” said I, “you aint
mentioned a single gal in the whole
turnout what aint bin in the practice
of deceivin’ men (oiks more or less,
an’ I didn’t go an’ dig up no scripture
to prove what I said about ’em. I
only stated personal observances an’
left the people to think what they
want to about it, but since you
have brought au’ brung up scriptures
what I don’t know but very little
about, you understand, they only
bear out what I have said au’ don’t
need no more substantuations.”
I left the Parson a pallin’ at his
eye brows an’ stodyin’ seriously on
our little conflab Flaw Picker.
A wise man always bets on the top
dog and the bottom facts.
