Miss Maud Thompson, who, with
Miss Maggie Bryant, has been teach
ing the White Plains school, the last
term which closed 'ast Friday, re
turned to her home in the city Tues
day afternoon,
On the last day of the school the
children and their parents brought in
well filled baskets of the good things
of that prosperous section and wound
up the session with a delightful pic
nic, which was enjoyed by all and was
a fitting tribute to teachers and pup
ils for their successful work.
Heath of Mr«. M. L. Irvin.
Mrs. M. L. Ervin died at her home
in this city. Tuesday after a long
illness. She was the widow of the
late Rev. Abner A. Ervin, of the
Methodist Conference,and was buried
beside bis remains at Blacksburg
yesterday. She leaves six children,
among them Mr. Chas. T. Ervin, of
Columbia, and Mr. Robt. Ervin, of
Manning. The others, three daugh
ters and a son, live in Gailney.
The funeral services were con
ducted by Rev. W. H. Hodges, of
this city.
Referee Mpeer lioldit Court.
At the reference in the case of J.
M. Gaffney, et al, vs. the Air Line
Railway, et ul, held before G. W.
Speer, special referee, Tuesday eve
ning all the local attorneys and
Messrs. C. P. Sanders and Stauyarne
Wilson, of Spartanburg, G. W. S.
Hart, of Yorkville, and X. W. Har
din, of Blacksburg, were present.
Eight or ten witnesses were examined.
The case will be argued before Judge
Aldrich at the fall term of court.

Rev. Arch C. Cree, the pastor of
the First Baptist church, arrives
from Williamston today, where he
has been engaged in a series of revi*
val services in which many souls
have been led to take their stand for
Christ Mr. Cree will preach in his
own pulpit next Sunday morning and
night. The public is cordially invi
ted 10 attend.
Bishop Capers Will He Here Sunday.

next Sunday evening at 8 o’clock.
The Bishop is widely known, not only
for his distinguished service of the
Master, but also as a gallant and ac
complished general of the Confeder
ate army. He is a preacher of rare
ability and his many friends in Gaff
ney will he glad to see and hear him
again.
Gaffney Hoys Honored.
Among the appointments recently
made by Acting President Hardin, of
Clemson College, we are pleased to
find the names of our worthy town
boys. Cadets Vernon Baker as ser
geant of Co. B, La Far Lipscomb as
seurgeaut of Co. H, and Kyle Daven
port, corporal Co. D, of the military
corps of the college.
A Correction.
We were misinformed about the
magistrates’ election in South Dray-
tonville when we stated in our last
issue that Magistrate Mabry and Mr.
W. E. M. Kirby would have to run
over. Magistrate Mabry informs us
that he was re-elected.

In our notice of the death of Mrs.
Julia E. Gaines we inadvertently
omitted to mention among her chil
dren Rev. L. R. Gaines, of this city.
