A charter was issued Tuesday to
the Blue Ridee Back of Greenville,
capital $3UO.UOO.
Maj. Micah Jenkins took charge of
the office of collector of internal rev
enue at Columbia Monday.
The Postoffice Department has es
tablished free delivery service, effec
tive September 1, at Sumpter, S. 0.,
and Hampton, Va.
A whole family of colored people
at Society Hill were poisoned last
week Two have died and the others
are not.expected to live.
Andrew, the fifteen year-old son of
Isaac Cook, was drowned last Friday
while bathing in the Little Pee Dee
river near Jordanville, Horry county.
A glass factory is to be established
in Churlesfon. The company is to
have a capital stock of #250,000
The factory will give employment to
about 8<K) operatives.
Alfred Huger, under death sen
tence, will serve a life sentence.
The death penalty has been reduced
to imprisonment for life. He is a
Berkley county negro.
Sunday afternoon between 3 and 4
o’clock the barn and its contents of
Mr. J. W. Jones were destroyed by
fire. It was a modern structure and
cost $400 and was partially insured.
A commission was also issued Mon
day to the Home Fund Life Insurance
company, of Greenville, which will
have a capi al stock of $1,000. The
corporators are G. H. Mahon and S.
S. Crittenden.
Thi governor has pardoned John
Leathers, of Greenville, convicted of
high and aggravated assault and sen
tenced to two years. He has served
17 months. Ill health is the cause
for the pardon.
The secretary of state Monday is
sued a commission to the Emerson
Lumber company, of Georgetown.
The capital stock is to be $10,000
The corporators are (). E. Emerson,
Patrick Matthew and A. Jewett.
The governor has offered a reward
of $100 for the capture and convic
tion of Daniel Hall, the negro who
recently fired upon two well known
white gentlemen on the South Caro
lina side of the Savannah river near
Augusta.
The summer institutes for farmers
are now being held in the several
counties in the State. These insti
tutes are held io counties which in
vite the corps of instructors—who are
seut out by Clemson college. There
are two sections of these teachers,
one working in the upper and the
other in the lower part of the State.
A fourth concern commissioned
Monday was the Lamar Tobacco
Warehouse company. of Lamar. The
apitalo stock is to be $2,500. The

A fire broke out in Camden Tues
day night about 10:30 o'clock from
the explosion of a kerosene lamp and
destroyed all the principal places of
business in the heart of the city.
The city was absolutely at tho mercy
of the flames, as the power house
had been burned some time ago, and
there was not a drop of water to be
had. The loss is estimated at $100 •
000.
It will be remembered that about
two months ago, when the naval ap
propriation bill was being debated In
the United States bouse of represen-
tatives. It wae discovered by Congress
man Elliott that no appropriation
was made for the Port Royal naval
station, and that he euceeded in hav
ing inserted in the bill almost st the
last‘moment an amount of over $6,-
000—the same anaount as appropria
ted last year—to keep up the ma
chinery department at the station.
But for bis vigilance the station
would thus have been entirely unpro-

A severe thunder storm, preceded
by a heavy wind squall, passed over
Camden Monday afternoon and blew
down the west wing of the new hotel
In the courts of erection in Kirkwood.
The framework of tbie wing bad just
been completed. The storm board
had been oalled on in parte, and the
whole was put up In as substantial a
manner as possible. The w4nd seems
to have settled in the structure,
which was four stories high and 120
feet long, and collapsed like a card
house, while the old part of the house
and the new east wing were not dam
aged. It will take about a month to
rebuild the collapsed portion of the
hotel.
The secretary of state issued a
commission to the WhaU., Aid so
ciety, of the city of Columbia, the
principal place of business of which
will be in the city or suberbs. The
purpose of the company is thus et
forth: “The general nature of ihe
business it proposes to do is to i
ceive fortnightly dues from members
and to pay to such members an in
demnity in case of sickness or other
disability, and a gross sum in case
of death, out of the net fund realized
from fortnightly dues, after payment
of expenses, according to a scale to
be adopted by the company and made
a part of its contract with members.” |

F. Barnes and John W. Anderson.
The Reedy Fork Baptist church,
colored, was the scene of a killing
Sunday in which Jos. Burton was
fatally wounded by a pistol shot at
the hands cf Joe Thompson, both
colored. The church is located on
the Fork Shoals road, about 12 miles
south of Greenville, and it is said
that the religious services are always
attended by large crowtfs, while ven
ders of liquor are on the outskirts of
the grounds, and the booze Hows
quite freely. It is also alleged that
white men are engaged in this traffic
at the church, and it is so notorious
tout the preacher on one occasion
not long ago gave a word of caution
to the liquor sellers, saying that the
constables might pounce down upon
them at any time.

Etta Jane, July 22—Mr. John R.
Edwards, in behalf of himself and
family, desires to thank the reigh-
bors and friends, and especially Prof,
and Mrs. Walker, of Cedar Springs,
for their kindness to them in the
death of his daughter, Mary, which
•ook place at Cedar Springs on the
19;h ultimo.

Miss Ethel Strain is visiting her
sister, Mrs. H. B. McDaniel, at Hick
ory Grove.
L iring our last visit to Gaffney we
met Mr. Thomas Martin, of Chero
kee township. He reports his sec
tion and people as getting along
finely. That he lives in one of the
best and most prosperous sections of
Cherokee county is evidenced by the
thrifty farms and happy homes we
find in that section. They have a
noble people over there—made up
largely of Dutch extraction—so much
so that we might properly call it
little Holland. Largely they raise
their own supplies and the hospitable
homes where the way-worn traveler
is so kindly invited to stop, rest and
be refreshed, make one feel a double
interest in its good people.
Mr. R. P. Scruggs, candidate for
sheriff, was io this section last Sat
urday looking after his friends.
A good long season, a slow rain of
a day or two followed by cloudy,
damp weather for a few days will
make most of the old corn in this
section.
This has been an unusually favor
able season for working a crop. At
no time have the plows or hoes been
stopped long, either on account of
rain or dry weather.
The blackberry season is running
out and it will be but a short while
till they are all gone.
“Are you the defendant?” asked
the judge of an old negro. “No
boss,” replied the old man, “I'se got
a lawyer to do de defensing in dis
case.” “Well, who are you?” asked
the judge. “I’se de gentleman who
stole de chicken,” replied honest
Cuffy.
A guest who was fl ittering the good
housewife by bragging on her dinner,
said: “We don’t often get such a
dinner as this.” (Little Johnnie,
son of the host, said before he
thought): “We don’t either.”
A henchman accosted the man
elected with : “You told me that if I
voted for you you would give me a
job, and I can prove it.” The poli
tician said: “I don't doubt it. my
dear sir, for I told every other man
the same thing.”
The Fowler brothers are threshing
wheat in this neighborhood today.
Crops are generally small.
Mr. H. B. McDaniel, whose illness
was reported in a recent communica
tion, we are glad to say is getting
wtll.
Mr. Wolkup, representing the
Southern Presbyterian, gave us a call
today. In speaking of candidates, he
said he was a candidate for heaven.
Brother, if that’s so. we are satisfied
that you will not have many strong
opponents in the race.
Mr. JimSmarr has gone to Spar
tanburg for a monument to bis father
and mother, who are buried at Salem
church.
Id making mention of the death of
Miss Ola Hames, which took place in
Texas recently, we inadvertently said
Bonham instead of Brookston, where
it took place.
A few of our neighbors have water
melons plenty, though the crows are
working on them badly in many
places.
Some of oor neigbors took wheat to
the Dawkins mill at Thickety and are
well pleased with the turnout of flour,
both in quality and quantity.
We understand there are some de
serving widows of Confederate veter
an* in thla county who have never
been placed upon the pension rolls of
the State. This la no fault of the
pension board—ita an oversight of
the parties themselves and their
friends, and we trust they will not
allow another opportunity to pass
without putting in their application.
It’s the object of the state to do right
by all, and if we fall to take advant
age of ita generosity no blame can at
tach to those whose duty it is to dis
burse the pension funda.
It seems that fewer names are add
ed each year to the pension rolls than
are taken from it by deaths.
Hon. W. B. Wilson, candidate tor
congress, and W. Ernest Peeler, can
didate for county treasurer, gave us a
call today. Mr. Wilson was on his
way to Armenia, Chester county.

The C. A N. VV. Railroad now has
its standard gauge ties laid to Gas
tonia. The force reached there Sat-
turday.
A charter was granted tn the El
liott Chair Company, of Lexington,
capital $25,000. J. A. Elliott, of
Thomasville, is a large stockholder.
The next annual meeting of the
Firemen's Association wi;h tourna
ment, will be held at Durham. Salis
bury made a .good fight to be chosen
as the place.
The State charters the Zachary .
Mantel Company, of Raleigh, capital
$25,000: A. I) Zachary and others
stockholders. It will manufacture
and deal in mantels.
Revenue Agent Patterson has been
allowed an additional clerk, with a
salary of $1,200. He has not yet de
cided whom to appoint. He reports
the seizure of a big distillery near
Durham Saturday. It had a capa
city of 30 gallons per day.
The executors of Matt Clark, who
was killed by a Southern Railway
engine, at the Second street crossing
in Charlotte, a few wetks ago, have
brought suit against the Southern
Railway Company for $20,000 They
have retained Messrs. Burweil,
Walker Cansler and Mr. Stewart
Plummer, as counsel.
Julian 8. Carr, the Commander of
the North Carolina division United
Confederate Veterans, says that all
the arrangements are complete for
the reunion of veterans at Greens
boro August 19, 20 and 21. He says
he expects from 1,500 to 2,000 to be
present. The State tents have been
secured for the encampment.
The grand jury has returned a true
bill against Mr. N. Glenn Williams
for assault and battery upon District
Attorney Holton. Papers were
issued and sent to Yadkin county
Tuesday. Mr. Williams came to
Winstoo Wednesday morning. Judge
Shaw Tuesday afternoon decided to
call up the case for trial at 3 o’clock
Friday afternoon.
The State Tuesday granted char
ters to the Elizabeth City Hosiery
Company, capital $10 000, E. F.
Adyleet and others stockholders; the
Peerless Mattress Company, of Lex
ington. capital $10,000, W. R Holt
and others stckholders, and the Red
Cross Remedy and Medicine Com
pany, of Wilmington, capital $10,-
000, James M. Forsher and others
stockholders.
At 1 o’clock Wednesday morning
a fire in Goldsboro hud just been
gotten under control. It was in the
heart of the city and the loss is put
at between $20,000 and $25,000.
Among the places destroyed are
Lam’s livery stables, Southerland’s
stable, Creech’s store and dwelling,
H. Well *& Co.’s two warehouses,
Robinson’s harness store and Robin
son’s ice house.
James Hariston, colored, charged
with shooting Simeon Kiger with
intent to kill, was arranged on Tues
day. He pled guilty of assault with
deadly weapon. Thursday morning
Judge Shaw gave him a term of two
years on the county roads. This is
said to be the limit. It is probable,
however, that he will be indicted in
other cases by which his honor can
add a few months or years to the
above sentence.
The trustees of the Agricultural
and Mechanical College desire to
separate the agricultural from the
mechanical department and to this
end will ask the legislature to appro
priate $40 000 for agricultural build
ings. these to be on a very fine site,
lately bought, directly in front of the
State Fair grounds. Thla site is the
highest point in several milea of Ra
leigh. In case such agricultural
buildings are erected they will be
nearer the college farm of 400 acres,
and all the present buildings can be
devoted to the mechanical depart
ment.
The next educational conference
will be held at Hickory, August 13th
and 14th. It is the desire to have
there at this time a conference of all
the county superintendents from
every weetern county from Ashe to
Cherokee who did not attend at
Greensboro or Charlotte. The entire
conference will be under the manage
ment of Superintendent Joyner, Dr.
Mclver and Governor Aycoclc, who
constitute the Stale executive com
mittee of the Southern educational
board. Besides these, Dr. George T.
Winston. ex-Governor Jarius and ex-
Superintendent Mebane i 1 be pre
sent.
F. N. Davis, postoffice inspector,
had the postmaster at Belgrade,
Onslow county, arrested and brought
before Charles B. Hill, United States
commissioner Wednesday morning.
Mr. Davis found the postmaster. F.
C. Henderson, short in bis money
order account over $1,000. This is a
very small office and was only made
a money order office last January.
Besides being the postmaster, Hen
derson is president of the Belgrade
High School and Business College,
president of the Belgrade Stock Com
pany and editor of The Belgrade
Courier. It seems that most of the
money orders issued were for the
postmaster himself. Commissioner
Hill bound Henderson over for bis
appearance for trial at the next term
of the district court. He gave bond
for $1,000.

A monster mushroom has been
gathered in a field at Nortwood. It
weighs 21 pounds 2 ounces, measures
39 inches in circumference and grew
