CREATSALE AT WILKINS’. Au Kuoruious Attendance and General satisfaction. After all is “said and done” the “proof of tbe puddio* i« the eatin’.” Phi a old maxim, if we can dignify it by this term, is tbe test of most all propositions. Wilkins made big promisee, advertised goods cheap and apparently kept his word, at any rate bis store has been packed and jammed this week and he has sold an immense quantity of goods, and everybody apparently is pleased. “Laugh and the world laughs with you” is another old saying, whether it is because of the fact that jolly Col Dyer cornea here from New York to manage the sale and enthuse all by bis personal magnetism; whether it is because the Mill-End syndicate shipped a car load of Mill-Ends, or last but uot least, whether it is be cause of tbe popularity of O. E. Wil kins in our community, tbe fact stands that tbe sale is a success. The town has been stirred up as never be fore, aod all lines of business have been benefitted. One of tbe decided novelties in the sale was tbe opening of an “art gal lery.” Col. Dyer secured several thousand steel engravings, copies of tbe old masters, many of them rare works of art, which be sold at a ri diculously low price—ten cents. It is needless to state that this created a sensation. Everybody bought them. Another sensation of tbe sale was the selling of an entire case of Simpson’s prints at two cents a vard We are glad to see New York meth* ode introduced in Gaffney, and Mr. Wilkins deserves credit for bis nerve aod pluck in inaugurating these en terprises. Col. Dyer Is now organiz ing a Southern syndicate of dry goods bouses, and proposes to introduce new tricks and methods in bis future sales in' the 8outh. The colonel goes from here to New York and thence to Europe. V\ e hope he will again pick up some rsre bargains for Gaffney’s next Mill-End sale. A Mtjw Bo* to Bice. Congressman D. E. Finley has re cently caused to be established a new postoffice at J. A. McCraw A Co's, store, near the 8tate line, in Cleve land county, N. C. The postofliee is called McCraw's, and Mr. Joe MoCraw has been made postmaster. The new postoffice will prove a great convenience to the people of the western end of this county who live near tbe line, as well as tbe people of that portion of Cleveland, and Mr. McCraw will make au ideal postmaster. A Thief laplured. A short time ago the Southern de pot at Thickety was broken into and a small quantity o: goods stolen froiu it, including a box of tobacco. De tective Haney, of the (Southern, was soon on the scene and after a little nice detective work soon located the tobacco. He took out a search war rant to search John Griffin’s (colored) house. He got some officirs to go with him to make the search. They asked John to accompany them, to winch he readily consented, but just before reaching tbe house be to k to the woods and left the officers to make tbe search alone. They found the tobacco and before a great while will find John. LATER John Griffin (col,) who ran off from the officers the first of the week when they were preparing to search hie house for goods stolen from the South ern depot at Thickety, was arrested near Thickety last night by deputy sheriff Barnett Lipscomb and Bert Hallman and committed to jail, John will he held for burglary and larceny. Griffin bad been defying the officers and declared he would not be arrested and when accosted by them be resis ted and forced them to shoot him be fore be would submit. He was shot in tbe lower limbs with shot but is not seriously hurt. At HaptUt Ciiur<-b Sunday. Rev. A O. Oree will preach the third of his series of sermoos on tbe Ten Commandments next Sunday evening. His text will be the 7th verse of tbe 20rb chapter of Exodus: "Thou shalt not take tbe name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that toketb his nam* in vain.” Services will begin at 8 :30 p m.
