Box 304. | A very novel waist is here illustra ted, made of folds of crape^de china in tuck effect and trimmed with lace straps and a deep lace yoke. Black chiffon bands are very artistically disposed and a large rosette of the same is placed at the left side. The sleeves are remarkable for their novelty and oddity. All the stitch ing is done with Corticelli silk. For shirt waists pongee is especially recommended and it is very fetching made up with hands of ecru embroi dery, or over a color with a heavy lace yoke. This material is parti cularly suitable for the Gibson and Duchess waists, the former giving the broad-shouldered effect so much sought after just now, in the shape of folds or tucks extending over the shoulder, the latter fastening under a double fly and showing fronts richly embroidered with Corticelli wash embroidery silk. The favored color in pongee is the natural ecru tint, although it can also be procured in different shades. Mercerized fabrics of all kind will be extensively worn, the process having been vastly im proved since it was first brought upon the market, and all sorts of sbk and linen mixtures are greatly in vogue. Congratulations are being tendered to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gray, who were quietly married Wednesday evening at the Methodist parsonage, by the Rev. W. H. Hodges. The marriage was quite a surprise even to the family, there being present in the bridal party only Misses Dora Scott and Addie McArthur. The bride. Miss Ree Scott, is the eldest daughter of Mrs. W. F. Mc Arthur, and s lady of many charms of character. The groom is a young man of sterling worth, and fine busi ness qualities. The many friends of Mr. Mercer in Gaffney and Cherokee county are glad to hear of his success in bis far-a-way mine. They wish him further suc cess, and they know if good sense, untiring work and indomitable energy will bring it, it is bis: "W. H. Mercer, who was in town on Tuesday, stated that the big tun nel at the head of Mineral creek, to develop the Mercer and Valentine property, is in 220 feet. A blower is to be put iu within a few days when the tunnel will be driven more rapidly. The tunnel has already gone through 28 feet of sulphide ore carrying about four and a half per cent, of copper. Mr. Mercer is now engaged on a survey for a wagon road to the tunnel, to be about one mile long and connect with the road to Siebotb’s camp, and upon which work will begin very soon. A grade of 12 28 has been obtained.” A Brilliant Social Event The reception tendered Capt. and Mrs. E. O. Sarratt Wednesday eve ning was as a mid-summer’s dream. The handsome home never looked more brilliant as when graced by ao much wit and beauty. The receiving party were: Capt. and Mrs. E. O. Sarratt, Mrs. Landy Hames and Miss Inez Sarratt. Before the congratu lations were in order one was re- freshed at the punch bowl presided over by Misses Helen Brobawn and Nellie Wood,after which the daintiest refreshments were served. All dispersed wishing for Capt. Sarratt and bis fair bride smooth sailing on life’s aluring seas. The bride waa gowned in a creation of cream crep-de-cbina over taffeta, and her dark beauty shown resplendent, beside the fair sisters of the groom, they being attired in white organdie elaborately trimmed in iace and rib bon.
