Tbe “Glorious Fourth" has come
and gone, Gaffney has done herself
proud. The celebration was an
unqualified success Every one had
a kind word for the committee and
tbe results of their labors. Even the
“knockers" “went away back and sat
down." The crowd was immense;
conservative estimates put it at five
to seven thousand, and it was very
orderly, good natured and jolly, as
Cherokee’s crowds always are.
The day was very warm, but other
wise it was an ideal one. Early in
the morning tbe people began to
come in from every direction of the
county, while every train that stop
ped at Gaffney the day before and
Friday morning brought visitors to
the celebration.
The nurude was formed in the
square fronting the National Bank.
It was quite creditable. Tbe floats
were not as numerous as they should
have been but they were decidedly
pretty and ^fleeted credit upon their
designers. The decorated vehicles
were as pretty as any seen in a
metropolitan city and showed rare
taste and decorative skill.
JiKSome features of the parade were,
O. £. Wilkins’ elephant, Bristow,
McAllister & Beeler’s “Long and
Short of it." Parker .fe Tolleson’s
bicycle lloat, and the decorated
wheel of ’ Tol” Parker, and Ed. Dur
ham, the clown. Another feature
that attracted the attention of those
along the line of march from the
square to the court house was the
‘Ruby Band.”
The procession was headed by the
Forest City K. of P. baud, which
discoursed excellent music along the
line of march and at the grounds.
Our former fellow citizen, Mr. K. J.
Barnett, is the manager of this band
and he deserves a great deal of praise
for the excellent showing the boys
made. Just here we wish to say that
the committee sincerely regrets that
they had so much to attend to that
they could not give the members of
the band a more cordial personal re
ception, but at the same time they
appreciate to an immense degree the
very valuable and acceptable services
rendered by the Forest City musi
cians.
The judges of the II ;ats and decora
ted vehicles and also of the contests
were: J. O. Jeff ries, K*q . \V. C.
Carpenter, L Baker and R A. Jones.
Tbe judges a tor led the prizes as
follows: Finest float—Cherokee Com
mission Co., P. V. Gaffney, manager;
second prize to the Mutual Life in
surance Co., R C. Lipscomb, resi
dent agent. Special mention of the
beautiful floats of S. B. Crawley A
Co., and The Ledger were also made
The first prize for the most beautiful
decorated vehicle went to Mrs. H 1)
V\ h*mt, while the second prize went
to Mrs. J. C.'Lipscomb Both these
vehicles were lovely and it was a
difficult matter for the judges to de
cide. Mr. KI. Byers also had a
pretty decorated vehicle in line.
Arriving at the grounds the first
event on the program was the speech
of Hon. M. L. Smith, of Camden.
Mr Smith was happily introduced by
Capt. J. B. Bell, chairman of the
committee on oratory. Mr. Smith
entered heartily into the tatk set
before him and made one of the pret
tiest speeches ever delivered in the
historic old grove, lie paid a splen
did tribute to the enterprise and
energy of Cherokee and dealt in
statistics that brought forth generous
applause. His speech was atten
tively listened to by u great crowd
and he was time and again interrupted
by applause.
After the speech of Mr. Smith the
crowd repaired to the race track
vhere the sports wire witnessed.
The contests rerulted as follows;
1st race—One-fourth mile bicycle
* ace, won by Derblo Littlej ihn; 2od
race—One mile, won by Will Sarratt;
‘Ird race—three miles, won by Ed.
Durham with Will Darby a close
second; Dh race—one-half mile, won
hy Will Sarratt; 5th race—one-half
mile, won by Ed. Durham.
The greasy pig was caught by
Jimmy Clary, and the lamb was
caught by Birdie Phillips
Pet Littlejohn won the barrel race.
Hiram Wessiuger and Olie Martin
divided the money in the foot race.
John McClinton won the second
barrel race.
Pet Littlejohn won the third barrel
race.
Emmet Parish climbed the greasy
pole and got the prize money.
The event of the day in athletics
was the baseball game between
Blacksburg and Gaffney. The Black
Birds jumped on the Red Skins in the
first inning like a duck on a June bug
and tore oil their scalps and scam
pered around like two year old colts.
And they kept it up for three or four
Innings, until it began to look Ftce
they would have no mercy whatever
upon the Indians. It looked for a
time as if the boys from beyond the
Broad would have a complete walk
over, but about the seventh inning a
Black Bird threw the ball away and
four Indians scored in that inning.
In the eighth the score was tied and
l
in the ninth the Indians bad one to
their credit, but the Black Birds lit
on to Pitcher Little in the ninth and
pounded him for a home run and a
three bagger, which netted them ten
runs, the game ending by a score of
nine to ten in favor of our neighbors.
The game abounded in errors by
both teams, but it was exciting and
the 1,500 people who saw it were de
lighted.
Chief Marshall A. B. Gaines rode
at the head of the procession
and performed his duties in an ac
ceptable manner.
The little ladies who rode in the
floats made perfect pictures.
The committee dissolves today with
the consciousness of having per
formed thejr duty as men and loyal
citizens, despite many handicaps.
Doubtless the best answer to al! crit-
ichme!|and aspersions is the fact of
the celebration attaining such an un-
preceden'ed success and the knowl
edge that the vast majority went
away highly pleased.
Three Marriages.
On Saturday evening last at 8:30
in the ladies parlor of the First Bap
tist church Miss Annie Bfown and
Mr. Charles Humphries, two of the
brightest and best known young peo
ple of Gaffney, were united in mar
riage. The wedding was very quiet
and informal. Only a few select
friends were present. Rev. Arch C.
Cree, tbe pastor of the church, offi
ciated. The couple have received
several beautiful presents.
Mr. \V. H. Wilkerson and Miss
Belle Bridges were married last
Wednesday evening at the home of
the bride’s parents, Mr and Mrs. W.
M. Bridges, in this city, by Rev. J.
B. Bozeman. Mr. and Mrs. Wilker
son are of Gaffney’s most worthy and
popular young people and have the
good wishes of a host of friends, in
cluding The Ledger, for their future
happines and welfare.
