Is a name well known in the
world of fiction. The famous
“ Leavenworth Case" is alone
sufficient to make her reputa
tion secure for all time. It is
generally regarded as one of
the strongest detective stories
overwritten. Itisbynomians
her only successful work.
“Behind Closed Doors" and
“That Affair Next Door” are
types of most successful nov
els. Another fascinating one
has been added to the list—

This is a detective story. It is
full of mystery and excite
ment. The plot is decidedly
strong and the tangle that is
started in the early chapters
is not unraveled until the close.

Friday will be the “Glorious
Fourth," and without any question
of doubt we are going to have the
greatest celebration of them all. The
indications of a record-breaking
crowd ard more than good, they are
sure.
The merchabts, maunfacturers and
business men generally throughout
the city and surrounding country
have signified their intention of
spending the day at Limestone, and
it is very certain that the great
majority will close their places of
business, offices etc., for the day.
Gaffney is ready to honor Indepen
dence Day, and our friends from
various sections, here, there and
elsewhere, are intending to assist in
celebrating the great day.
The first event on the programme
will be the parade, and while this
will lack the pomp that usually
given, provided there are fifteen or
more wheels In lice.
In contradiction to reports that are
being ciiculated regarding an in
crease of charge at the gate. The
committee informs the public that
the usual fee of ten cents will be im
posed.
The Ledger correspondent at Etta
Jane, is either of short memory or he
belongs to the great army of “knock
ers.” If he will lock over The Led
ger files he will find a complete refu
tation of his charge, regarding “his”
colored sisters’’. In conclusion the
committee invites the Sage of Etta
Jane to “attend and participate in
the festivities" attendant on the
“Glorious Fourth.” We know he
will enjoy himself and be in a posi
tion to give a correct version of the
celebration In the future.
The prizes are on exhibition in the
show window of R. A. Jones & Oo.’s
store, 811 Limestone street. Every
body is invited to stop and look at
them. They are handsome and
costly.
Mr. C. L. Harman is arranging for
an excellent barbecue, and delicious
meats s.od bash will be served hot
from the fire. Mr. Harmon has bad
considerable experience along his line
and those who patronize him may
rest assured that they will receive
courteous treatment.

The many friends of Mr. J, Fred
Foster in this and Spartanburg coun
ty will be pained to learn of bis
death, which sad event occurred at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Lip
scomb on Frederick street, in this
city, Sunday afternoon at G o’clock
in the 31st year of his age after an
illness of several months.
Mr. Foster was born nearCampton,
in Spartanburg county, and was a
son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Foster.
He was a young man of fine sense and
sterlingchuracter, was unpretentious,
but his love for bis family and friends
was ever apparent.
When the Spanish-American war
broke out he was one of the first to
volunteer his services. He joined
Capt. Hunter’s company (Co. E) of
the First South Carolina volunteers
and served with it until it was mus
tered out of the service In the army
he was a good soldier, ever ready for
any duty that was assigned him, and
discharged them as became his race
and an American soldier from South
Carolina. His intercourse with his
comrades was so irar.k and manly
that he was'loved by all.
He bore his long affliction patient
ly. which was soothed by the ever
present loving hands of father,
mother, a devoted sister and brothers
and the best medical aid, and when
the end came he passed away quietly.
A sboiT funeral service was con
ducted at tlie house by Rev. Arch C.
Cree, when the remains were carried
to Oakland cemetery and buried in
the family lot
The pallbearers were G. C Wi ; k-
