Wood entertained a number of her
young lady friends at tea in honor
of Miss Holland and Miss DuPre, who
are visitirg Mrs. DuPre. From !) to

young gentlemen, in which the ladies
participated.
The decorations, pink, green and
white, were carried out in decorations
and refreshments. Tne evening was
most delightfully spent by ail wno

of a key.
After refreshments were served the
prizes were presented by Mrs. Gaines.
First prize being won by Mrs. John
Lipscomb and second by Mrs. Boyd

We regret to learn that Mr. Joseph
Mabry died suddenly at his home at
Pacolet Mills last Monday morning.
He was buried at Corinth cemetery
Tuesday in the presence of many
sorrowing relatives and friends, a
number of whom w^r-from Gaffney.
Mr. Mabry was nearly all his life
a citizen of the Union part of
Cherokee where he is well and favor
ably knew, was of highest character
and had many friends whose sympa
thies go out to his bereaved widow
and children.

On next Saturday and Sunday there
will be a mission rally at Buffalo
Baptist church. All day meeting on
Sunday. On Saturday, Rev. Ham-
rich will preach. On Sunday morn
ing at 11 o’clock Rev. Thos. Dixon,
of Shelby, N. 0., will preach. On
Sunday afternoon at two Rev Arch
C. Cree, pestor of the First Baptist
church of Gaffney, will deliver an ad
dress on ‘‘Missions in the Twentieth
Century.” The public is cordially
invited to attend these meetings.

We learn from a reliable source
that three cars of a mixed train on
the S. C. A G. E. railroad fell through
the trest'e at Little river above
Shelby. N. C., yesterday morning
and killed one nassenger named Lee
Griggs and severely injured two la
dies whose names we were unable to
learn. Also that several other pas-
s< ngers were injured. The cars that
fell through were two freight and one
passenger car. which were the hind
most cars in the train.
Dr. B. B. Steedly has about the
handsomest turnout in the city.

Mr. T. G. Phillips, of Home, sent
us a cotton bloom on the 17th inst.

Prof. Reynold GrifIPh, once of
Gaffney, has been elected instructor
of English in the University of Texas,
over fifty competitors.
The many friends in Cherokee of
our- old friend “Aus” Humphries
will regret to learn that he got his
shoulder knocked out of place re
cently. We learn he is improving
rapidly.
The Ledger is indebted to Mr.
and Mrs. E. R. Cash for some deli
cious peaches they sent us Wednes
day. We assure thenf that we en
joyed them hugely, and that this
kind attention is appreciated.
Our baseball team crossed bats with
Shelby at the Shelby ball park yes
terday. A good game was the re
sult, the score being S to 7 in Gaff
ney’s favor. The Shelby boys will be
here next week for a return game.
For some days past Rev. Arch C.
Cree has been unwell. In conse
quenoe of this, he was unable to at
tend the mission rally at State Line
last Sunday, ami there was no service
at the First Baptist church. He is
better now and out and about his
work.
F. F Spencer, mechanical engineer
of the firm of Lockwood, Green ife Co.,
is in the city superintending the con
struction of the finishing plant of the
Gaffney Manufacturing Co. Mr. Spen
cer favored The Ledger with, a call.
He is an interesting gentleman, and
we are glad to have him in the city.
S. B. Turner has been over to his
Cleveland county, N. C , farm this
week harvesting his wheat, lie re
ports his wheat poor, but that his
corn and cotton are line. He says he
saw C. P Lavendar and that ‘‘Lurn”
told him to tell The Ledger he had
lots of cotton blossoms. Good luck
