We want this to be your

Death of Mr*. Kllllau.
The many friends in Gaffney of
Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Killian, of Chero
kee Falls, will be pained to hear of
the death of the latter, which oc
curred at the home of her father.
Hon. John Brown, at Mullins, in this
State, on the (ith inst., where she
was buried.
Mrs. Killian had been a long suf
ferer, but was soothed by all that
loving hands could do for her. She
was a lady of sterling and gentle
character, which endeared her to all
who came in contact with her. She
was a consistent member of the Bap
tist church and her faith comforted
her when the end came.
She leaves a devoted husband and
a fifteen months old child who have
the sympathy of a large circle of
friends, which includes The Ledger.

A very handsome sleet costume
made of blue cloth is shown below.
The blouse waist is tucked, with
slightly overlapping front and opens
ovf r a chemisette of white chiffon.
The blouse sleeve is also tucked and
between the tucks is a trimming of
applique taffeta of graduated size
framed with crochet rings worked
with dark blue Corticelli crochet silk.
A similar garniture appears on the
panel front of trie skirt, the latter
being completed with a corded
flounce, and above the flounce at the
sides are more lengthwise tucks.
Picturesque ■ ffects are the rule and
are in evidence on sides, and flowered
si ks, flowered mousselines and gor
geously flowered parasols greet the
eye everywhere. Jn fancy, at lea«t.
the pages of fa-hion have turned
backward to the flower designs once
so much io vogue. <>o the whole the
trend of dress at the moment is toward
greater elegance reaching out in all
directions. The dainty mousselines
in small patterns with wide and nar
row borders of large flowers are in
great demand.
The woman who must wear any
dress she has for a lor g time is care
ful never to f-elect what is striking,
and prefers that her’ tont ensemble”
shall be distinguished for elegance or
fit and finish and harmony of color
rather than richness or expense.
In looking over fashion illustrations,
somebody sees a good looking dress
for the ideal woman, and ninety-nine
out of every one hundred dresses are
made from it in all sizes. In most
cases the design while all right for
the large woman or for the small
woman is all wrong for the woman
who is the other extreme in size.

Albert Lee Spake, second son of
Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Spake of this city,
died in Savannah, Ga., on Monday
the ffth inst . after an illness of two
weeks of typhoid fever, in his twenty-
sixth year.
The flrst intimatio^ his parents
had of his illness was a telegram
Tuesday announcing ins death. His
brother, Mr. Lawson Spake, went at
once for the body and arrived in the
city with it Wednesday midnight.
The body was carried to tbe home of
his parents and was hurried yester
day in the family lot in Oakland cem
etery in the presence of many sorrow
ing relatives and friends. The funeral
services were conducted at the grave
by Rev. \V. R. Potter The pull
bearer* wire. H. H Lockhart, C. A
Wood. John E J-. Ilerii-s, W. W. Gaff
ney. J. Eb. Jefferies and Clif T. Clary.
Mr. Spake had had quite an ad
venturous life. Jn bis youth he
spent two or three year* at work and
travelling in Arkar sas, Kansu*. Texas
and other states. When the Spariifh-
Americun war broke out he enlisted
from Texas and was soon sent wi f h
his regiment to the Philippines where
he did something over two years of
faithful services, and was engaged in
several butties in which he bore him
self with that aailantry becoming an
American so ! dier from South Cor
olina. After his discharge from the
army he returned to the home of his
parents in this city, where he re
mained until a few months ago when
he engaged in business which took
him away from home.
Mr. Spaks’s death was a great
shock to his parents, brothers and
sisters and many friends here. The
sympathy of the entire community
goes out to the bereaved family.
A l’l« axani Orcaxiou.
There was a happy gathering of
young people at the residence of Mr.
und Mrs. John H. Lipscomb on Petty
street Wednesday evening. The party
was composed of nearly two score of
Gaffney’s best people, who entered
into the pleasures of the occasion
with zest, and the kind attention of
the hospitable host and hostess added
much to iis enj lyment.
Dainty refreshments were served
by dainty hands, and all went off as
m-rry as wedding bells until time
was approaching the “wee sma hour,”
which admonished the happy young
people that they should go to their
homes. All left feeling that their
presence had been a special personal
favor which they appreciated highly.
