The Tygerville section of Laurens county was visited by a severe rain and hail storm Sunday afternoon. Smallpox has appeared at Salley’s, iken County, and the neighboring towns are quarantined against it. A charter has been issued to the Johnstone Cotton Oil Company of Johnstone, capitalized at Ho,(KM). Two white men are on trial in Florence on the charge of setting | their store on fire to get insurance. Jaik- son, from Winnsboro. was killed by a bursting grindstone ut a Batesburg planing iniil on Thursday. Thirty-two out of the thirty-nine applicants were g/anted license to practice medicine by tile state board of examiners. The trustees of the Laurens graded schools voted their teachers H'> apiece to help them to pay expenses in attending the state summer school. A mistrial was ordered in the ca?e of Smith and Dennis, tried inF orence last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The jury was called from the room at midnight Sunday. L H. Gilmer, a wealthy saw mill man of Darlington county, committed suicide on Thur.-day by shooting him self in the abdomen with a pistol. He was J5 years old. In an altercation at Gray Court Saturday evening J. R. Willis was shot by Arch and Claude Owens, who in return were beaten by Mr. Willis with a base ball bat. A daring burgler smashed the pla e glass door of the store of J. M. Green on Main street in Columbia early Saturday motnirg and thus effected an entrance. Nothing was stolen. The members of the Greenville hose team have been charged with cruel treatment of the horse which pulls their truck. A warrant has been issued and the case will be tried. The graduating class of Olemson college this year numbered 59 Of these 17 graduated in textile indus try, lit) in mechanics and engineering and 12 in chemistry and agriculture. Lightning struck the large livery stables of A. W. Jenkins Son at Conway Sunday night setting them on fire, and they, together with the residence and stable of W. E. Porter near by, were destroyed. The State board of control bas de cided to grant to Spartanburg anoth, r beer dispensary, making in all three. The county board of control will meet on July 3rd and elect a dis penser for this additional beer dispen sary. The best news for Charleston that has come from Washington in a long time is that contained in the special dispatch from the capital, published in the telegraphic columns, Monday morning, that the senate has added to the naval bill ifijoTjjCMj. for the con struction of buildings at the Charles ton navy yard, to be available during the fiscal year begining the first of next month. Thanks are due to Sena tor Tillman, Secretary Moody, Ad miral Endicott and Senator Hale, chairman of the naval committee, for their friendly interest in the matter. A sensational affair occurred in Spartanburg Monday night in which a white man named Perry was severe ly castigated at the hands of about 75 or more citizens for a serious of fense. The man in question bas been the proprietor of a junk shop on Main street and it was a noticeable fact that several young school girls, ranging in age from 12 to 15 vears. daily went into the man's place of bosiness, which was such that would not attract that class of patronage. Such occurrences aroused the suspi cions of gentlemen doing business in the adjoining buildings who one day last week watched the place and their worst suspicions were confirmed. The work of paying the tobacco re bate claims, arising under the war revenue reduction act of last year, bas been completed in this district. Collector Koester last week mailed the last of the checks in payment of the claims. From this source $45,(KM) has been distributed in South Caro lina during the last fortnight. On the first of July the war revenue re peal act passed this year goes into ef fect. At that time, ciaims for rebate of tobacco tax will again be made out. Collector Koester expects to receive this wee* a supply of the blanks ne cessary for making out these claims. Its the plugs that come from a distance who have never yet learned how to behave. We have boasted that we have the most peaceable and law abiding com munity in the State, but if such scenes of outlawry as were enacted on the highway last Sabbath are al lowed to go unrebuk- , d, we will have to change our opinion. It’s no trouble for him to bring sinners to the mourners bench or place them on the stool of repent ance. The cut worms have been so bad that some people bad to plant their corn over. Quite a storm of hail, we learn, fell on Mr. J. Buice's farm in the Hick ory Grove neighborhood last Satur day, doing considerable damage to crops. We have never seen cotton look better at the time of the year. The stalks are well grown and look per fectly healthy, although the cool nights have been no advantage t3 it— rather a drawback. Most of our farmers are going over their crops the second time since they have had rain. John Dixon says, .“The drier the weather, plow the deeper.” and John knows all about farming. Mr. T. Jeff Hughes gave ns a “pop call” Monday. He looks well and is doing very well. The Salem S. 8. has appointed Thursday, July 31. as childrens’ day. Our Ledgerites were greatly disap pointed when they failed to get Rev. Frank DeWitt Taimage’s sermon last Saturday, but they are all right iu today’s paper. These sermons are and will cootioue to be au important feature iu newspaper enterprise. With the more intelligent and better claes of readers the space they occu py cau be filled with nothing better. Littleton, N C , has just closed its 20 n year with fulsome praise on the lips of a Very Urge number of friends. Tne exercises and concerts will all be held in the immense auditorium, which has been turned over to the musicians by the people of Asheville. The town of Ayden. ten miles south of Greenville, was swept by another incendiary fire Sunday morning. The flames started ut 1 o’clock, exactly four weeks to the hour, from the pre vious conflagration. While more build ings were destroyed in this than in the previous fire, the amount of loss is only about one-third as large, the previous loss being $40,0(mj. The weight to the large clock in the steeple of the Home Moravian church in Winston Salem, which weighs 2UO pounds, fell Sunday night while Rev. E. S. Crosland, who occu pied the pulpit, was teiling the con gregation how to wpestle with the evil one. While no damage was done, the noise produced by the weight ex cited the congregation for a few min utes, until they were advised of the cause of the trouble. The two negro boys, Harrison and James Gillespie, aged 10 and 13. respectively, committed to jail at Salisbury for the murder of Miss Ben son, Monday afternoon, In the north western section of the city, were taken to the outskirts of the city at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday morning and hanged to a tree and their bodies riddled with bullets. The mob was composed of about 50 members, while severel hun dred people were attracted by the commotion. Some of the counties which applied for aid from the $100,000 given by the State to keep the public schools open four months got the money af ter a number of their schools had closed. Now some of them want to use the money for building or im proving school houses, and ask if they can so use it. They are toid most decidedly no; and that it can only be used for the specific purpose named. It is suggested that they reopen their schools. C»pt. W. Murdoch Wiley and Mr. W. E. Wiley, of the firm of Reddick, Mitchell & Co., New York, spent a few hours in Winston-Salem Satur day afternoon conferring with citi zens who are interested in the build ing of a railroad from Elkin to Ashe county The visitors expressed them selves as being well pleased with the reports made and they decided to re turn there early in July, at which time the engineer, who is making an other survey, will be ready to submit another report The New York.-rs represent large investment firms and the outlook for Lbe building of this road is decidedly hopeful. Governor Aycock Tuesday pardoned Hoyt C. Moore, of Pitt county, who was serving a twenty-year term for manslaughter. He had served four years. Judge Hoke recommended the pardon. The case is of particu lar interest because Governor Aycock, while a member of the bar. appeared as prosecutor against Moore. The sou of Moore killed a policeman at Bethel, Pitt county. Another son was in the fight. Moore was present and took a small part in the affair, but was trying to get his sons to leave. One son submitted to murder in the second degree and was sent to the penitentiary for life and died there. Moore submitted to man slaughter. Rapid strides are being made to ward the change of route and in preparation for the standardizing of the guage of the Carolina k North western railroad between Dallas and Lincolnton. Beginning at the South Fork river a large force of hands is at work widening the grade and filling the approach to the bridge, the latter having been rebuilt to carry standard guage trains. Workmen are now at work tearing away the framework of the old structure across tht> stream. Just beyond the river the new line leaves the old bed. Considerable rail has already been laid on this line, beginning at the river side and going towards the cotton mills up the stream, which the road will touch before reaching Lincolnton. Stand ard rails are being put on the new grade, but for the present the narrow guage will obtain. Filthy Teinpleit in ln*lia.
