The best news for Charleston that

A sensational affair occurred in
Spartanburg Monday night in which
a white man named Perry was severe
ly castigated at the hands of about
75 or more citizens for a serious of
fense. The man in question bas been
the proprietor of a junk shop on
Main street and it was a noticeable
fact that several young school girls,
ranging in age from 12 to 15 vears.
daily went into the man's place of
bosiness, which was such that would
not attract that class of patronage.
Such occurrences aroused the suspi
cions of gentlemen doing business in
the adjoining buildings who one day
last week watched the place and their
worst suspicions were confirmed.

trade that no one can get who doesn’t
handle •‘Clifton” flour. Users of
‘ Clifton” can’t be satisfied with any
other kind. “Clifton” has established
a new standard of purity and the

used "Clifton” recently, you should
by all all means instruct your grocer
to send you a sack when you order
flour again. Don’t let him persuade
you he bas “something just as good.”
He may be buying other so-called
patent flour at a little lesi than he
paya for “Clifton,” and he naturally
wants to push this on you because he
makes a few cents more on it. In

Etta Jane, June II—We under-
sMtid that on last Sabbath not far
from Dr. McCluney’s place on Abing
don creek, while returning from
preaMiing, a very unprovoked, dis-
one ful and disorderly row was raised
on the public road by some colored
..entry who drew pistols and rocks on
each other. No blood was spilled,
however, hut such boisterous conduct
should he investigated by the grand
jury, and such promiscuous and uo--
lawful practices broken up. Not less
than four pistols, we are told, were
drawn and brandished by as many
rioters. We think that Capt. Clayt
(’amp has room for at least that,
many reeruit« to his road force, and
therefore call the attention of the
authorities to that fact. Their names
will be handed in and if the grand
jury fails to do its duty it will have
to shoulder Hie responsibility. It’s
ro wonder that respectable white la
dies are afraid to stay at home by
themselves when rowdys and outlaws
are allowed to promenade the high
ways in defiance of law, and particu

Governor Aycock Tuesday pardoned
Hoyt C. Moore, of Pitt county, who
was serving a twenty-year term for
manslaughter. He had served four
years. Judge Hoke recommended
the pardon. The case is of particu

sou of Moore killed a policeman at
Bethel, Pitt county. Another son
was in the fight. Moore was present
and took a small part in the affair,
but was trying to get his sons to
leave. One son submitted to murder
in the second degree and was sent to
the penitentiary for life and died
there. Moore submitted to man
slaughter.
Rapid strides are being made to
ward the change of route and in
preparation for the standardizing of
the guage of the Carolina k North
western railroad between Dallas and
Lincolnton. Beginning at the South
Fork river a large force of hands is at
work widening the grade and filling
the approach to the bridge, the latter
having been rebuilt to carry standard
guage trains. Workmen are now at
work tearing away the framework of
the old structure across tht> stream.
Just beyond the river the new line
leaves the old bed. Considerable rail
has already been laid on this line,
beginning at the river side and going
towards the cotton mills up the
stream, which the road will touch
before reaching Lincolnton. Stand
ard rails are being put on the new
grade, but for the present the narrow
guage will obtain.
