Three of Them Receive Freedom at
Hands of Governor Jelks.
Montgomery, Ala., June 9.—Gov
ernor Jelks has pardoned George How
ard. Martin Fuller and John Strength,
three of the four white men convict
ed in Elmore county of lynching the
u**gro Robin White, and sentenced to
10 years in the penitentiary.
The negro and John Thomas had an
altercation in which no harm was
done. Tfie theory of the people in
Elsmore is that Thomas misrepresent
ed the affair to nis neighbors and by
that means raised the mob that did
the lynching.
They sent in petitions with three nr
four thousand names on them asking
the pardon of three of the men, and
many delegations have besieged tho
capital.
John Thomas, the principal in tho
mob. was convicted »nd appealed to
the supreme court, which affirmed tho
case last week.
There is no application for Thomas’
jiardon and the people of the county
lay the blame on him. The three men
pardoned had been in prison a year.
The case is famous as the only in
stance in Alabama where 1. white man
has been convicted of lynthing a ne
gro.

Negro Uprising In Mississippi.
Memphis, June 9.—A special from
Meridian, Miss., says: Telephone re
ports from Marion and points the
north of Lauderdale county bringnews
that the excitement of Saturday light
has somewhat oUbsided. Greene J»hn-
son and Nate Moore, the negroes ar-,
rested Saturday afternoon as leaders
in the movement to murder the whites,
were released today owing to a failuro
to id- ntily them as rioters and writers
of the letters appointing rendezvous
for the negroes w ho had been armed.
Every white man over a territory o!
10 miles was armed Saturday night
and si pt with a gun beside him in
anticipation of trouble. The decisi/6

on their -art to carry out their plans
would i f suit in their liolesale slaugh

MURDER IN BROOKLYN SALOON.
When Taunted as to Courage, Parker
Kills Crane.
New York, June 9.—For telling Noah
Parker, 'J2 years old, that he lacked
the courage to shoot a fly, James
Crane, aged 29, has been shot anil
killed in a Brooklyn saloon. The bul
let entered the man's heart, killing
him instantly.
When he saw his victim fall, Park
er became excited and fired four oth
er shots at the other persons in the
saloon. None of the bullets took effect
however. Parker then hurried to his
home and later surrendered to the po
lice.
Parker, who is a negro, came from
Kentucky. An argument over horse
racing brought about the banter to
shoot which caused Crane’s death.

inquest which was to have convened
at Coal Creek today to resume tho
investigation as to the cause of thu
Fraterville mine horror of May 9 has
by mutual agreement of the coroner
and the Coal Creek Coal company
been continued until June 23. Mora

The manager of one of the most
successful furniture houses in
Greater New York was asked to
what one thing, in his opinion,
the success of the -concern was
most due. He replied:
“The founder of the firm was a great
believer in advertising, and to this fact
may ba ascribed the enormous business
we are handling. ’ ’
There no business; however
small, that cannot be increased
by judicious, systematic, per
sistent advertising. The giant
oak does not gain its strength in
a day. Magnificent buildings
are not reared all at once, nor
can their strength and beauty be
appreciated until the finishing
touches are put on.
Is your business satisfactory?
Are you making headway? Are
you using to the best advantage
the greatest of all business lev
ers—advertising? If you are
satisfied that you are, well and
good; if not, drop in and talk
it over with us.
We have advertising space
to sell, and
adveriising is a part of oux business.
Perhaps we can help you.
