at Georgetown.
The journey from Gaffney tod
Georgetown last week was without |
incident or accident. At Columbia
we met the capable and effi -ient
superintendent of the Cherokee Falls
Manufacturing Co., J. R. Killian,
who was on his way to Mullins, where
ne had been called on account of the
serious illness of Mrs. Killian. It !
was here that we boarded the Coast
Line train. Attached to this train
were two coaches of the brightest
and happiest folks it has been our
pleasure to see in some time—they
were the orphans en route to the
ivory City, and they attracted atten
tion from every direction.
At Lanes we left the Coast Line
and got on the Georgetown and Web-
tern, which, by the way, is the only
railroad that goes into Georgetown.
It was on this train that we began to
come in contact with the press.
Waen the train arrived at Georgetown
it was boarded by a committee who
assigned the press homes. The Led
ger was quartered at the Windsor
with Mr. Ford. Among others who
stopped there were Messrs. Conner
and Bouis. representing the American
Type Founders Co., and while these
gentlemen were on business bent they
contributed a great deal towards
making the occasion one long to be
remembered.
With the proceedings of the meet
ings of the Press Association the
general public is not concerned, so
we will dismiss it with the simple
statement that a number of good
papers were read and discussed and
all the old officers were re-elected
excepting the vice-presidents. These
two offices were given to the Pied
mont—J. 0. Garlington, of the Spar
tanburg Herald, being elected First
Vice-President, and your humble
servant Second Vice-President.
The people of Georgetown did the
spreading adder act—they just flat
tened out aud while they did not bite
they insisted on the visitors testing
everything in sight, and the wonder
to us is that any of the papers whose
editors were present have been en
abled to get out any kind of an
edition this week. The Palmetto
Club and the Georgetown Board of
Trade ran a race to see which could
be the most hospitable and the result
was so close that the judges pro
nounced it a draw contest. Every
thing was free and as some one re
marked, “au editor’s money was
counterfeit in most places.” In fact
some fellows went into D. J. Crow
ley’s and after quenching their thiist
one offered to pay, but the gentle
manly attendant told him his money
was counterfeit; tlie editor swore it
was not and in order to satisfy him
self be went to the cashier audn-
quested change, which was readily
given him. But every time a press
man got anything at Crowley’s it was
always “This is on Mr. Crowley,”
and as a consequence his place was
frequently visited. And just here let
us say that we also went there. Mr.
Crowley has the prettiest and most
up-to-date cold storage and grocery
establishment to be found anywhere.
Of course we have seen larger ones,
but his place would be a credit to
NYw York or Chicago.
Thursday afternoon the press was
taken on an excursion down Winyah
j Bay. It was a most delightful outing.
There was an abundance of refresh-
i ments and everything was absolutely
free.
The revenue cutter “Forward”
went along and part of the excursion
ist came back on it.

-uperb and lus'ed from 9:530 p. m. to
4 a. m , and when the farewell was
spoken and the last hand skake made
the grey dawn of a new day had made
its appearance in the eastern horizon.
Part of the press left at 4 a. m. on

c mutry homes, all bearing pleasant
recollections of dear old Georg* tow n.
We can’t stop without paying our
respects in a general way to the good
people of Georgetown. They enter
tained in such a manner as to make
one feel that he was truly a welcome
guest, and this is an art that all
people, however good their intention,
do not posess. Much of the success
of the occasion is due to Mayor Mor
gan and Hon. Walter Hazard, who
left no stone unturned, as indeed no
one else did, to make the occasion a
success.
We hope, however, the fellow who
exchanged the ij-l 50 i uw for the $15

good. Re must have been pretty full
