Mathematical Problems.
The following mathematical prob
lems were submitted to the eighth
grade of Gaffney Graded School No.
1 at the last examination, and are
published for the benefit of those who
take a delight in mathematics. An
average of seventy was required for
the passing mark:
1. How many yards of carpet three
quarters of a yard wide will be needed
to carpet a room 19x14^ feet if the
stripes run lenghthwieef
2. Solve by measures and actual
measure how many bricks will be re
quired for the (our walls of a building
100x60x22 If the walls are 1$ feet
thick and if 600 cubic feet are allowed
for doors and windows?
3. Find the number of gallons of
water in a well 31 feet in diameter.
Depth^of water 10 feet.
4. Find the number of bushels of
grain required to fill a bin 20x10x8.
5. Give rule for fiudiog (1) area of
circle, (2) area of surface of a sphere,
(3) volume of a sphere, volume of a
cone.
6 Find the difference between the
present worth and bank proceeds of
$540, Aug. 3, 1896, with three mouths
to ruu, money being worth four per
cent.
7. A note for 90 days without grace
at 5 per cent, was discounted at a
bank. The amount received from the
baok was $256 10. What was the
face of the note?
8. A merchant dropped 8 per cent,
on his price and yet made 15 per cent,
on an article that cost him $10 40.
What was his asking price?
9 How many pounds of tin will
there be in 232| pounds of gun metal
composed of 1 part of tin to 5$ parts
of copper?
10. Find the cube root of 87528.384
Th« Cherokee Avenue Meeting Clones.
For ten days preceding Tuesday
night there was conducted at the
Cherokee Avenue Baptist church one
of the most successful revival meet
ings that has ever been held in Gaff
ney. Mr. Bozeman, the model pas
tor, had with him during the entire
time the Rev. D. P. Montgomery, of
Kentucky, who did all the preaching.
He is one of the strongest preachers
it has ever been our good fortune to
have in Gaffney. He is eloquent, a
strong reasoner, deeply interested in
his work and bis every word and ac
tion evidenced his great earnestness
and deep piety.
This meeting has left its impress
on the city and can but have a last
ing influence for good among us. As
a result of it, sixty-one new members
have been added to the Cherokee
Avenue Baptist church. Forty of
them by Baptism.
Mr. Montgomery’s great work
among us has made him many
friends whose love and good wishes
for him ard his will be lasting and
follow him to his far off home.

vice board held on April 26, at Peusa-
sacola, Fla., the following persons

The great music festival is over and
