THE MEADOW ORCHID
WHY THE RUSSIAN PEOPLE CALL IT
“THE CUCKOO’S TEARS.”
A Iy«*K«*n(l of the I,nnil of the C.ar.
That Deal. WIUi Mafflc. Love and
IlatipIneN. and One Re.olt of the
Fatal Feminine Tongne.
One warm Sunday afternoon the vil
lage maidens assembled to bathe In the
river. They took off their kerchiefs and
their coronet headdresses, seated them
selves ou the bank to cool off and be
gan to gossip. One maiden alone sat
silent Frosya, an orphan, poor, but
beautiful, with fair skin and eyes as
blue as the gentian, which the Rus
sians call "the flight of the falcon.” So
the other girls began to tease her:
“Have you no dearly beloved friend.
Frosinya? Who is he. where is be? Is
be handsome, is lie rich?”
“Where should a poor girl get a rich
and handsome young lover? Yonder
adder is my husband.”
No sooner had she said this than all
the maidens cried, with one accord.
“The adder!" and took to their heels.
And upon her kerchief, which Frosya
had thrown upon the grass, behold, a
huge black adder lay colled. She cried
out in fear. Rut tiie adder beat its tail
upon the ground and was transformed
Into a wonderfully handsome young
man. There he stood before her, with
a golden cap upon his flowing curls, his
eyes flashing lire, and honeyed words
fell from his lips. And he said to her:
“Did you mean it when you declared
that you were ready to marry the ad
der?”
She knew not what reply to make,
but gazed at him and thought to her
self. “Whence came such a wise and
handsome youth?” And he. divining
her thoughts, replied to them, ”1 am no
common man. but the czar of the wa
ters, and my empire is close at hand in
a deep pool on golden sands."
And he read In her eyes that she con
sented to go with him. Then he grasp
ed her with his powerful hand, and to
getlier they sank down into the deep
realm of the waters.
Great was Frosya's happiness. She
could not believe In it. He was po
good, so wise; she had never seen such
people, and there is none such any-
where ns the czar of the waters. But
Frosya was foolish Seven years did
she dwell with him In the deep pool in
Ids palace of crystal, and the seven
years passed as one day. and there
need not have been any end to her
bliss. \ girl and a boy had been horn
to them. Then, all at once, without any
cause, she became sad. longed for the
earth, to behold her native hamlet and
her friends once more. So he let her
go, with the children, for three days
after having exacted a promise that
neither she nor the children, either by
word or by binL should reveal the
name of her husband or where she
lived. And all this she promised, with
fearful oaths. Then her husband es
corted her to the dam. At the end of
three days s * to come to the same
spot and cry “Cuckoo!” thrice, where
upon he would swim at once to meet
her.
She kept her oath, hut her friends
coaxed and questioned the children.
The boy to nil queries replied simply,
“I don't know.” But the girl told ev
erything. This was all the envious gos
sips wanted. They ran and told all to
their husbands and brothers, who Im
mediately ran to the dam and uttered
the magic words. And when the czar
appeared they heat him to death. But
before he died he contrived to say to
Frosya: “I have to thank thee, my dear
wife, that I am now come to my death
through thee and my daughter. Hence
forth fly thou ever as a gray cuckoo
and repeat thou ever my call. ’Cuckoo!'
In sadness of heart from early spring
until St. Peter’s day I St. Peter’s day.
June 2'J (July 12, O. SjJ. and from that
day forth qiay every bird, both great
and small, beat thee and pursue thee.
And mayest thou, my daughter, my be

and may that weed, the fiery, forever
burn thine eyes wheresoever thou may
est be, that thou mayest weep forever,
remembering thy lather's death But

command. 1 make this bequest: That
he shall be the bird beloved which
dwells and slugs In gardens and amid
shady groves for the Joy of happy peo
pie. for the consolation of those who
weep, the nightingale.”
And from that day forth the Russian
people have called the meadow orchid
“the cuckoo’s tears." [It Is also known

How the Krror Occurred that Gave Klse to
Certain Reports.
Mk. Editok : ’ learn that a report
is being circulated by my opponent,
or his friends, against me. They have
learned that an eorror was made in
this office in putting Mr. A. N.
Wood’s property on the tax duplicate
for taxation, and they are disposed to
make a ‘'mountain out of a mole
hill” about it.
Mistakes are frequently made in
calculations and copying figures, and
such things are not new to business
men. Those who know anything
about my office know that I have
always baa tbe best business men for
my assistants.
I call out tbe names and properly
amounts from the returns, each and
every item, and ray assistant writes
them down. In thus transferring
Mr. Wood's property my assistant
either misunderstood, or by a slip of
the pen. wrote it “$16.57” instead of
‘$16,147 ” As soon as the error was
discovered. I of course corrected it
and at once informed Mr. Wood.
Like the gentiman be is, he did njt
’ kick,” as he knew how it occurred ;
but he came up to the treasurer’s
office and paid on what had been left
off, and also his bank tax, just as if
no error had occurred. I presume he
thought no more about it. Neither
tbe State nor the county has lost a
cent by the error. I am responsible
for aii mistakes that occur in this
office, whether made by myself or my
assistant, and should any loss to the
State, county or individual be the
result of tuci error, I and my bonds
men are good for it.
I am sure this matter has not been
kept a secret, as there are no secrets
in this office. Every taxpayer has a
right to examine my books, and it is
pleasure to me to show them, and,
if an error has been made, to correct
same. Every business man makes
mistakes, and I do not believe there
is an auditor or bookkeeper in the
State who has not made numerous
errors. One or two small errors in a
hook containing 6000 names and
amounts that reach to $65 000 is a
very insignificant matter, especially
when it is so easy to correct them on
my books.
1 presume had I not been a candi
date for re-election the one error
s»?ok“n of would not have been
thought about. Such reports on a
candidate would seem to indicate
ihai those who circulate it thick it
rheir only chance to win, just as a
drowning man will grab at a straw ;but
he who thinks to win on such a down
fall of an opponent generally standt-
in t te light of his own best interests.
I do not write this as an ‘‘election
eering scheme,” as I never had better
encouragement nor fuller assurances
that my friends will sustain me than
I am receiving every day. While my
opponent is electioneering, having
nothing else to do, I am busy doing
the work I have been elected to do.
All who know me know that I con-
s der ‘duty” the biggest word in the
English language.
Now, my friends, my opponent. s<
far, is young, and if he has ever don*
any meritorious or heroic act or de u n
that he should be rewarded for, hi
can well afford to wait and be re
warded for such services when he has
performed them. But it I am to re
ceive any reward it must come now,
for only a few short years and all ol
us old Confederates will have crossed
the river. My record is known to
you all, and upon that I propose to
stand, sir k or swim, survive or
perish. I court investigation of my
ar-rs. and a?k that credit be g'von for
what is due me. If you think I can
stand the test applied by Andrew
Jackson to office s ekers, “Is he
honestf Is he competentV Is he
worthy ’? I shall be proud to again
receive your support. If re-electd I
shall consider it a very high compli
ment and an indorsement of mj
former conduct; and you mav res*
assured that no act of mine will h
such as to cause you to regret having
supported me
Your humble servant.

It is said that tbe human heart, in

forces it through the body every

wonder that so many people die of
heart failure.
