Servlee* Commemorative of Gen. Hampton
Held In Court House Friday* Might.
The Hampton memorial meeting
held Friday evening in the court
house under the auspices of the
Moses Wood and Winnie Davis chap
ters of the Daughters of the Confed
eracy was one of the most pleasing
and most heartily entered into meet
ings, by those present, of anything
1 that has happened in Gaffney for
! some time. The two chapters atten
ded in a body and Col. J G. Ward-
law. commanderof the (Smith Lips
comb camp of the iSone of Veterans,
presided. At It o’clock Col. Wardlaw
in a deservedly complimentary man-
ror. introiuced Kev. John McBryde,
D D., who was a gal.ant Confederate
soldier of McGowan's brigade, and, as
he stated, is still "an unreconstruct
ed rebel ”
Dr McBryde took up the life of
Gen. Hampton and showed his inti
mate knowledge of it. He pictured
him as rich Southern planter, as
modest citizen, as daring, energetic
and prudent, but aiwajs unflicding
and successful soldier, and as wise
patriotic and able statesman. In
all these phases of life Gen. Harnp-
! ton measured up to the acme of per-
' fectiou and marked him the fore
most man of his time. Dr. McBryde’s
soul was iu his address and bis flights
of eloquence and pathos often made
the tears well up in the eyes of the
gray-haired veterans who were given
seats of honor near him. His refer-
I ences to the women of the (South dur
ing the war were fine, the hardships
they underwent, the privations they
suffered, the loss of fathers, husbands,
sous, brothers and sweethearts never
crushed their spirits, they kept up
their work and were to the last for
war.
After Dr. McBryde finished his ad
dress Col. Wardlaw tbeo introduced
Capt. H. F. Griffith, who, as usual,
went right into his subject. The ;
theme was inviting to him and his
eulogy on Gen. Hampton, though
short, was the fiorst we ever heard
on any man, or that we ever read.
Hampton’s sweet civil life, his
lofty, manly and dignified statesman
ship, Hampton, the dashing cavalier,
all sprung up before tbe speaker, and
bis picture of these phases of his life
were vividly presented to bia hearers
ana painted with lurid eloquence.
He said if there was a being ao low
that a character lik-JHamptoo’e|could
not inspire emotions of pride and pa
triotism in its breast, that being was
sordid and no good could or ever
would eminate from it. He told the
women that it was hard for them to
realize what Hampton had done for
them. That for five months he bad
stood between them and civilization,
aud the anarchy, mi*rule and thiev
ing po icy of the republican party
whicu they had inflicted ou fimih
Carolina. He stood like a giant and
held back this robber baud of repub
licans and in u peaceable way plu< ked
from them their ta.ousof destruction
aud hurled them from place and
power, and restored decency and civ
ilization to .South Carolina. He held
up the republicans in all their hid
eousness and said that the few white
people in this State who fraternized
with them then since or now, should
not be trusted by white South Caro
linians.
Tbe Winnie Davia and Moses Wood
chapters Daughters of tbe Confeder
acy have done a superb, patriotic ser
vice. We congratulate Mrs. W. O.
Lipscomb and Miss Inertia Morgan,
the presidents, and their comrades of
the two chapters on the Hoe work they
have done, and thank them for the
splendid example which can but in
spire patriotism and have a general
ennobling effect on the community.
Dr. McBryde was entertained at the
beautiful suburban home of Mr. aud
Mrs W. (> l>ipscomb during his stay
in Gaffney.

REV. AMOS CLARY.
He ■» Now a Full-Flexed Miulitter and Wil
Take l'p Ills Work in T« xa*.
Rev Amos Clary, who has been
taking a course of study in the Roch
ester (New York) Theological Semi
nary, graduated there last week and
arrived at tbe home of bis mother in
this city Baturday.
Mr. Clary is of one of Cherokee’s
oldest and most highly respected
families and is himself one of her
most worthy sons. He is a graduate
of Furman University as well as of
! the Rochester seminary above men
tioned. He now has a fine education,
the result of his own hard work, huh
starts out into the work of his sacred
i calling with high literary attain
ments, unsullied character, deep
j piety and true Christianity.
Mr. (illary preached two strong ser-
I rnons in the first Baptist church Bun-
| day. His texts were well chosen an,;
his sermons showed a k mwledge ol
his subjects which was pleasing to his
friends, and his earnestness of style
showed his appreciation of the great
work he has taken up.
We wish that Mr. Clary could see
his way clear to stay with us, but
duty has called him to another field
and he will in a short time take up
his work in far off Texas, where he
has accepted a flattering call. The
good wishes of all Cherokee will att-nd
him wherever lie goes and those of
the writer will represent a full share.
Mayur's Court.
The Baturday and Sunday sinners
appeared iu fpree yesterday morning
aud were soon lined up before His
Hornor to^ answer tbeftebarges pre-
fertd against them. Nine were pre
sent aud each one had in his opinion
a pretty good excuse for his troubles.
His Honor gave each one a patient
bearing but tbe scales of justice went
down on the side against all of them, ;
and His Honor dispensed the penal
ties .to each as he in his judgment
thought the offender deserved. And
while he was merciful to all, tbe joint
penalties netted tbe city eighty days
of. work, a commodity the parties
who furnished it are not imtimably
agiuainted with, and five dollars
which went jingling into tbe city
treasury.
Tbe parties all looked pienitent,
but many of them are not strangers
in the court and will be there again
as soon as they can get a few cents
together to get a bottle of ‘fuss X."
or start a peony "skin game."
Feuvluu* Behijg Fald.
The money for the Confederate pen
sioners iu Cherokee county has been
received by the clerk of the court and
is being paid out. (^uite a number
of the grand old feilows were paid
Saturday g and others were paid Nes-
terday.
They get $19 (}j each and appre
ciate it, but we aimoet feel ashamed
when vie think of Georgia's munifi
cence to her gallant oiu heroes, in
compar.son with the pittance tuuth
Carolina is giving hers.

Gaffney has on her festive garb
