Succession.
New Yotk, May, 5.—The develop
ments ot the latter halt of last week
in Wall street in connection with the
stocks of the Dominion Securities com
pany. the Rutland Railroad company
and the Hackensack Meadows com
pany resulted today in the announce
ment in rapid succession of the sus
pension of three stock exchange brok
erage houses.
The first firm to declare inability to
meet obligations was Offenbach &
Moore.
Henry Bros, and Lockwood, Hurd
& Co. followed rapidly.
Offenbach & Moore were known
principally as “Webb-Meyer” securi
ties, and the announcement was made
Saturday that the^ had experienced
some difficulty in securing loans to en
able them to carry stocks for the inter
ests which they represented. On Sat
urday afternoon, however, a statement
was made in behalf of the firm to the
effect that the temporary arrange
ments had been made and it was
hoped means might be obtained today
to pay off obligations and continue
business. Today’s suspension shows
however, that these hopes were not
realized. The offiees of Offenbach <C
Moore were not opened for business at
all today.
Mr. Gordon, of Henry Bros., whose
suspension followed that o' Offenbach
& Moore, was a director of the Do
minion Securities company.
The stock market opened weak with
the knowledge that a number of fail
ures were imminent. Support was ac
corded the market and there wei ■
some rallies, but when sales under the
rule for suspended houses were made
the market gave way again. The high
priced stocks which had been under
recent manipulation were the severest
sufferers. Rutland preferred dropped
14 points, Westinghouse preferred
droppd 15, New York. New Haven and
Hartford 5, North American 5 1-8,
Northwestern and Tennessee coal 8.
The coalers were affected In addi
tion by fears of a minor strike; Del
aware and Hudson dropped 4 1-2, Read
ing 3 and others smaller amounts.
Losses of 1 to 3 were quite general
throughout the list. Before the first
hour had elapsed supporting orders
were effective again and there w^ i
some substantial rallies.
On the curb, where non-stock ex
change Becurities are traded in, there
was an excited group of traders trying
to make sales in Webb-Meyer stocks.
Dominion securities, w f hich sold last
Fridr.- at 118 1-2 and on Saturday at
70, were offered today at 70, but the
best bid was 20. Later it was offered
at 50 and the bid declined to 10. Hack
ensack Meadows was offered at 40,
with no bid. On last Friday it sold
at 79.
Dr. Seward Webb, president of the
Rutland Railroad company, arrived
here today from Shelburne Falls, Vt.
It was said at his office that a state
ment would be issued some time dur
ing the day. Henry Bros, made the
announcement after their suspension
that they were solvent and that they
had suspended for the time being in
order to protect their customers.
No statement of liabilities or as
sets accompanied the suspension no
tices, And it was said such statements
might not be obtainable for several
days. Up to 11 o’clock there had been
no service of the order of arrest ob
tained on Saturday of A. L. Meyer.
Moral Wave Sweeps El Paso.
El Paso. Tex.. May 5.—For the first
time In many years pbulic gambling
has been entirely suspended In this
city and the front doors of all saloons
were clused throughout Sunday. The
mayor’s proclamation providing for
gambling restrictions and Sunday clos
ing of saloons and games became ef
fective Sunday and it may be said
that El Paso has observed the Sab
bath probably for the first time in her
history.

Gould Buys Yacht Taurus. »
New ^ork. May 5.—George J. Gould
has chartered the British built and
owned steam yacht Taurus, formerly
the Eros. The vessel has been com
menced to fit out at Southampton.
England, and will sail for these waters
about May 2<>. Mr. Gould will use the
Taurus in cruising along the coast and
some of his trips may extend well to
the eastward.
Gilbert Makes $4,000 Bond.
Wayeross. Ga.. May 5.—George F.
Gilbert, who appeals for a new trial
in connection with the Plant system
car robbery case, and who was re
quired by the court to give a bond for
$4,0h0 until June 9, when the applies

Have Become the Wife of Ling Foy.
a Wealthy Merchant, Is Abducted.
Crime Charged to Highbinders.
New York. May 5.—Wee Lung Fong,
a beautiful Chinese girl, who was
brought to New York three weeks ago
to become the wife of Ling Foy. a
wealthy Ninth street tea merchant,
has been kidnapped by highbinders
and intense excitement prevails in
Chinatown. The wedding ceremony
was to have been performed at the
Joss house in Mott street at midnight
tonight and extensive preparations ;
had been made for the event. The
merchant has not yet been told of the
disappearance of his fiancee.
Ling Foy is said to be one of the
wealthiest Chinamen in America, hav
ing made a large fortune. He has
been living in luxury for years. Near
Hong Kong Ling Foy had seen a beau
tiful girl, whom he determined to pur- |
chase for a wife. An agent was sent
to China, where the girl was purchased j
from her father for $8o0.
Shortly after the news of the ap
proaching marriage., was spread
through Chinatown Ling Foy was ap
preached by a committee of the high- [
binders and asked to contribute $1,060 j
for a general merry making among the |
people. The merchant flatly refused.
Lis prospective wife had already cost
him about $3,000 and he did not see
the necessity of paying anything to the
highbinders. The next night the girl i
was carried away in a carriage and
the woman in whose care she was also i
disappeared. The leader of the high- |
binders’ society is likewise said to be '
missing, and Ling Foy'a friends arc
exerting their utmost endeavors to run
down tin kidnap* rs.

When asked for an expression of
opinion comerning the situation in the
anthracite region the senator said:
“I can add nothing pertinent to what
I have already said. The situation, at
is apparent to every one. is very grave.
It would not be wise to discuss the
matter now.”

Masked Men Made Haul from a Lake
Shore Freight Depot.
Cleveland. O., May 5.—Three mask
ed and armed safecrackers blew the
safe at the I.ake Shore freight depot
at the foot of Wason street early to
day aad secured an unknown sum of
money, thought to be about $500. The
robbers had a violent struggle with
the night watchman and after over
powering him he was bound and gag
ged. Then the men took from him
everything he had before proceeding
with the drilling of the safe. The safe
was badly wrecked. There is no clew
to the robbers.
Meeting Ends In Free Fight.
Vienna. May 5.—The congress of the
German Peoples party held here yes
terday evening was broken up by the
followers of Herr Schoenerer, Pan-
German. who immediately after Herr
Wolff, the Pan-German leader, com
menced the opening address on the
platform, pelted him with lumps of
sugar and paper balls. A free fight
ensued between the different factions
and the police with difficulty cleared
the hall.
Mr*. Soffel Pleads Guilty.
Pittsburg. May 5 —Mrs. Kate Soffel,
wife of Warden Soffel. of th£ Alleghe
ny county jail, who figured in the sen
sational escape and recapture of the
Biddle brothers last January, was < ail
ed into court this morning and entered
a plea of guilty to the charge of aiding
and abetting the escape of the prison
ers. She will be sentenced next Sat
urday.
Died “With His Boots On.”
New York, May 5.—Captain Hiram
Pugh, who has just died at Bridgeton.
N. J., has not slept in a bed since be
returned from the civil war. When he
was taken ill some weeks ago his doc
tor ordered him to bed, but he resisted*
all efforts to make him obey the order,
and died ’ with his boots on.”

Panic Ensued and Disregarding the
Fire Escapes Many Jumped From
Rear Windows to an Extension and
Were Injured.
New York, May 5.—Two persons
perished and several were injured to
day in a fire which gutted the building
at 304 Pearl street, occupied by the
Eureka Bedding company.
The dead:
Emma Boltcher, 19 years of age.
John Lynch.
The injured are:
Ethel McGrath, burned, probably fa.
tally.
Katie Wadsworth, contusions on
back and internal injuries, caused by
jumping from fourth window.
Annie Gilroy, sprains and bruises,
caused by jumping from fourth floor.
The fire started on the first floor
near a pile of stair pads. A boy was
sweeping some loose cotton over the
floor and it is supposed that he swept
the stuff over a lighted cigar or cigar
ette stub. The cotton burst into a
blaze, the stair pads were set on fire
and in an instant the fire spread
throughout the first floor and mount
ed upward.
A panic ensued and disregarding the
fire escapes many of the employes
jumped from rear windows to the roof
01 an extension. It was in this way
that Miss Gilroy and Miss Wadsworth

Reign of Terror In Russia.
Vienna, May 5.—In a dispatch from
Warsaw, the correspondent of Die In
formation gives a gloomy picture of
the conditions of terror in Russia. He
says there is scarcely a single Russian
town where sentences to banishment
and imprisonment are not constantly
being imposed. There has been a
great demonstration, says the corre
spondent at Ekate Rlnosiav, In south
ern Russia, where the Cossacks killed
20 pecsons. wounded 40 more and ar
rested 150.

Victim of Italian Mafia.
New York, May 5.—Frank Diconza.
a political leader among the natural
ized citizens in the Williamsburg sec
tion of Brooklyn, has been shot and
instantly killed by two unknown men.
The police believe that he was a vic
tim of the Mafia. The shooting oc
curred in Driggs avenue. Two shots
were heard and two men were seen
running from the body of the fallen
Italian. The motive for the murder is
as mysterious as the identity of the
assassins.

that a new cabinet has been formed,

finance, Guillermo Barros: minister of

Death of Majdr William Wagner.
New York, May 5.— Major William
Wagner is dead at his home at Short
Hills, N. J. He was a member of the
military order of the Ixiyal Legion of
the United States, having served with
distinction as a major of cavalry dur
ing the civil war. Until lour years
ago. when failing health forced hf
to retire from business. Major Wag
ner was secretary of the Denver and
Rio Grande Railway company.

Union Painters on Strike.
Cleveland, O., May 5.—Between 400
and 500 union painters went on strike
in this city today to enforce a demand
made upon their employers for 35
cents an hour. The men have been
receiving 27 1-2 cents an hour.
Death of Veteran Turfman.
j l/ouisville. May 5.—J Gratz Hanley,
one of the oldest turfment iu the west,
died her** suddenly of apoplexy at 3
o'eloek this morning. He was entiy
clerk at the Louisville Joekey club's
spring meeting and lived in Newport,
where he was formerly secretary of
the Queen (’itj Jockey club, lie
about ( 5 years old.
