D. E. Boney secretary and treasurer.
The company is operated and confined
to territorial divisions, said divisions

not less than one or more than ten
counties. It is purely an assessment |
company and therefore purely co-op
erative and mutual, and is managed
and controlled by by its members
through their duly organized board of j
directors. Its object is to secure by '
mutual co-operation the protection of
the lives of its members, and its plan j

! loss, Mrs. Perry Dover of Clover, S.
jC., who died on April llfth. and her
I beneficiaries were paid .$728 KJ on
I April 2ist. .She had only paid in
i ooe assessment to the company
amounting to $205.
This company is not a speculative
company hut a home enterprise, and
at the low 'entrance fee and rate of
! the death assessment as now fixed,
it is hardly taking enough otl of the
people to pay its actual running ex
penses, but always has a sufficient
amount in the treasury to pay one
death loss without having to wait to
collect an assessment. This company
has one director for each township,
and for Cherokee they are as follows:

Wednesday night a stranger went
into the vSmitb Hardware Company
store, and asked to look at a pistol.
It was shown him and he soon agreed
to take it at five dollars, the price
asked him, for which he offered in
payment, what appeared to be a
twenty dollar bill. The money was
received and fifteen dollars returned
to him in change. The stranger took
the pistol and change and disap
peared at once.
Soon after this transaction it was
discoverd that the bill received was
only a two dollar bill, with a figure
nought cut from a Confederate bill,
and so pasted on it as to give it the
appearance of twenty dollars.
Every effort was made to find the
rascal, but hejhad made good his
escape and left no clue by which he
could be followed.
