The new superintendent of the
Charlotte division of the Southern
Railway is getting things in good
shape once more. Merchandise is
now received in something like a rea
sonable length of time, but there is
yet room for improvement. W e trust
that the railroad will soon be itself
once more.

W’e start our good roads column
with this issue. We trust our people
will begin to take an interest in this
matter. Laying aside every other
question, we firmly believe that more
good to the whole people is to be
derived from improved roads than
from any other source. Ret d these

them, and you will be a belter man
for the reading and tbe pondering.

Col. J. (*. W’aralaw’s plea in Tues
day’s Ledger for a public library for
Gaffney is timely and along proper
lines. Nothing contributes more to
the upbuilding of a town in a literary
and educational way than a public
library, and we would be delighted to
see Gaffney take such steps as would
insure the establishment of one. Let
those who feel interested in tbe mat
ter present their views through The
Ledger.

What glorious weather we are now
being blessed with ! Are we grateful
for the good things the Creator be-
atows upon us? How many people
daily give thanks with grateful hearts
for the good things of life? How
many abuse the good things given us
and never think of the bounties of a
kind providence? It is proper to stop

of a good citizen by attending and
lend your influence towards all that

their own way and then complain
about it. If you stay away you have
no right to find fault with what is
done by those who attend.

making hay while the sun shines,
but as a rule, we venture the assertion
man who lives in this section should
be proud, happy and content. Those
who are not are pessimists of the
worst sort. They would not be con
tent in the New Jerusalem and
couldn’t be happy in a land that flows
with milk and honey. Brag about
your town and county but do not
boast. Boasting is unseemly and ill
becomes anyone, but you can be
proud of your community without
boasting.

That was a splendid tribute Dr.
Lodge paid to tbe fidelity of the peo
ple of Gaffney to local enterprises
in Tuesday’s issue. They were the
true expressions of an appreciative
heart to a loyal people. And in this
issue appears a communication from
one of Gaffney’s most loyal and de
voted citizens, Capt. R M. Gaffney,
which is no less splendid than Dr.
Lodge’s tribute. Gaffney has indeed
done much for Limestone and Lime
stone in return bus done much for
Gaffney. May both go forward locked
arm in arm to achievements grand
and noble in education and material

citizen of Gaffney, when I say that
we appieciare the kindly sentiments
expressed by him. And while we ad
mit that our people have given liberal
ana generous supporr to •’Old Lime-
tone *' yet as busin ss m-n a d
men who Know a good thing, we leel
that not a dollar has been misspent;
for in assisting Limestone, we help
Gaffney financially, socially, morally
and religiously. Now, in regard to
the May Music Festival. This is not
a new venture, but simply a return
to “Ye olden times,” when Lime
stone, under the able mdoage-
ment of the Drs. Curtis, had every
year in May. a simular festival which
was widely patronized, and looked
forward to by not only the patrons of
the college, but by the very best,
most cultured, and refined people ot
the South. I will say without
fear of contradiction, that these
occasions never failed io measure up
to the expectations of the most
fastidious, and always added new
luster to the college.
Mr. Editor, the president of Lime
stone is a second Dr. Curtis and re
minds me very forcibly of him, not
simply in his manners, but in the
management* of the college and
backed by his able assistant, Prof.
