Cairo. 111., April 21.—Although no
complete list of either the victims or
of the survivors is yet obtainable, in
vestigation today indicates that almost
one-half of the 150 people on the City
of Pittsburg were lost when that ill-
fated steamer was burned yesterday at
Ogden's Landing, between this city
and Paducah. Many of those who
were brought to this city are suffering
from injuries, exposure and fright. The
number aboard was about equally di
vided between passengers and crew,
the latter suffering the greater loss in
casualties.
The names of nany of the “roust
abouts” were not known, and the num-
her drowned or burned is not likely to
ever be ascertained. The fire started
in the lower part of the steamer, in the
freight material or possibly in the en
gine room, and shut off the means of
escape there while passengers jumped
overboard from the upper decks.
Penned In by Flames.
Within ^en minutes of the discov
ery of fire at 4 a. m. survivors say
the upper decks were swept by flames
and passengers were penned in on all
' sides, even the life preservers being cut
off by the fiarnes. The panic which fol
lowed caused a greater loss of life than
would have ensued if the officers could
have controlled the terror stricken
people. Some rushed through the
flames and perished; othes fainted
and sank down to he cremcted. Many
in their night robes, some of them
afire, jumped overboard and were
drowned. Those that got into the boats
saw others drowning as their over
crowded crafts pulled to shore. The

that the greater percentage of losses
was among the women and children.

When the steamer anchored in Gi
bara harbor a salute of 21 guns greet
ed General Palma. His face bright
ened at the scene before him. How
different was his return to Cuba! He
left in chains and came back with his
path literally strewn with roses.
The haroor was a kaleidoscope of
color and animation. Ffcom every
craft flew the flag of Cuba libre and
the Stars and Stripes. Old friends
Populous Towns of Quesaltenango and
Amatitlan Have Been Reduced to
Ruins by One of the Severest Earth
quakes Known to Central America.
New York, April 21.—The three
earthquakes on Friday night reduced
to ruins Quesaltenango, the second
city of importance in Guatemala, hav
ing 25,000 inhabitants, and completely
destroyed the town of Amatitlan, says
a Guetaniala City (Guatemala) dis
patch to The Herald. Both of these
fowns were capitals of the depart
ments of the same name each bears.
It is reported that 500 persons were
killed in Quesaltenango, but the rumor
lacks confirmation. The exact loss of
1 life cannot now be ascertained. News
! of the destruction, which extended 100
j miles along the western part of the
republic, is coming in slowly because
j all the telegraph wires are down.
| It is known that Amatitlan exists no
, more as a town, the seismic disturb-
! ance having been so great. The in-
; habitants—that is, those of the 10,000
i residents who escaped death in the
I cataclysm—are camping in the open
! air for safety, not daring to return to
the ruined confines of the town. Some
of the inhabitants are building tem
porary mud huts.

Maryland Day at Charleston.
Charleston, S. C., April 21.—A large
delegation from Maryland arrived
here today to celebrate that state’s
day at the exposition tomorrow. The j
governor and his staff heads the party .
