March 13.--Colon.vl John F. Gayuor, Mrs. Gaynor and Cap tain 13. D. Greene, Gaynor’s partner, are all registered at the Chutteau Froutenac here, and enjoying them selves as they always do in Quebec, where they aie Irequent visitors. They drive and walk and entertain their friends and appear to trouble them selves very little about the newspaper stories or indictments. This corfidence undoubtedly results from a on the part o* Gaynor and Greene that they cannot be extra- dieted for the cft'ens ' charged against them—to-wit, conspiracy to defraud the United States government. It is declared by lawyers here th^.t Canada soil offers a safe asylum to even prov ed conn&irators of this type, the of fense being outside the list of crimes covered by the extradition treaty. If this contention holds, the Unite! States government would have no re course in its pursuit of the fugitives save an appeal to int- national comity. A simple request ior the surrender of indicted criminals, not extradictable, might be granted out of mere good will. Apparently, however, Messrs. London, March 13.—The war secre tary, Mr. Broderick, announced in the house of commons today that he un derstood that General Methuen, who was captured, severely wounded, by General DeLarey March 10, had been released and was expected to arrive at Klerksdorp, southwestern Transvaal, today. The general’s condition was fa vorable. Canton. .March 13.—There is great dissatisfaction here at tin* extortionate taxes which the mandarins are levying upon the pretext of meeting the in stallments of the Chinese Indemnity. The merchants have petitioned the viceroy for rearers asserting that they fear the action of the mandarins will lead to an uprising. Newspaper Man Suicides. New York March 13.—Andrew J Watrous, a well known newspaper man. committed suicide today by shooting. He had been a sufferer from Insomnia and had been under the care of a physician ti£ some time. Francis, a lawyer, charged with misappropriating C3.000 of funds belonging to the Countess of Orkney, formerly Connie Gilchrist, of 'the Gaiety theater, plead ed guilty at the Old Bailey today.and was sentenced tttfrre years’ penal servitude. Eryan Goes to Washington. New York, March 13—W. j. Bryan, who was the gu st of Lewis Ni«iu at dinner in this city iast night, has gone to Washington and will then*leave for Nebraska. Flagman Killed By Train. Savannah. Oa.. March 13.—Charles Cowart, a flagman on the Plant sys tem, was run over in the Plant sys tem yards and fatallv Injured by a pas senger train. He crossed the track in front of the fast moving train, and the pilot of the engine caught him. The engineer brought the train to a stop as quickly as possible and train men cared for the man. The road’s surgeon was summoned and Cowart was taken to the Savannah hospital, where he was operated on. He linger ed for a few hours, when death came to his relief. Rhodes Passes Restless Night.
