PROGRAMS ARRANGED.
Th« Annual May Mu«lc Festival will be
Held at l.lmestoue College on 14tli, 15tli
*and 1 (itll- The Heat Concert Sluice;* Have
Jfeeu Secured
The second May Music Festival un
der the auspices of Limestone Col
lege has been announced. From in
formation at hand we judge that
Limestone is taking giant strides in
festival giving. The committee in
charge of this festival is composed of
Dr. Lee Davis Lodge, president of
the college; i'rof. Goo. i’ratt Maxim,
director of music, and Gaffney’s most
prominent and representative busi
ness men.
The programs are now being ar
ranged and the following important
choral and orchestral works have
been selected: “Stabat Mater”
(Rossini), “Gipsy Fongs” (Dvorak),
Oowen’s cantata “The Rose Maiden”,
Schumann’s “Quintette” for string
quartette and piano, excerpts from the
opera “Faust” (Gounod.), and also
from HaendeFs oratorio “Messiah.”
The solos (soprano, contralto, tenor,
baritone, piano, organ, violin, and
cello), the ensemble numbers, and
the smaller orchestral works have
not yet been selected, but they will
be of the same high grade of excel
lence as those already mentioned
The festival will open with a voice
and organ recital. Tbe second con
cert will be orchestral with assisting
soprano and tenor soloists.
The third performance will be on j
opera night, the program comprising
the most pleasing solos, ensemble
□ umbers and choruses from the
world’s greatest operas, and also the
tunelul cantata “The Rose Maiden.”
All of the soloists will appear with
chorus and orchestra.
The fourth program will be mis
cellaneous and decidedly popular in
character.
Tbe final performance wilt take
place on Oratorio night, the program
being selected from the masterpieces
of oratorio. Rossini’s “Stabat Mater”
will also be performed. These works
will be rendered by.the chorus and
practically the same soloists etc., as
appear on Opera night.
1 At time of writing none of the con
tracts with foreign artists have been
closed, but negotiations have gone so
far that we can safely give some inti
mation of thf sp’endor of the solo
and ensemble woik which .viU be vu-
j .yed by festival patrons at Lime
stone College, May 14, 15 and 10
The tenor and the baritone are
among the best concert singers in the
west and are the most effective festival
singers in the country. The contral
to is a younger singer, but one of con
siderable experience in concert and
festival work. She was chosen from
a large number of candidates by Mr.
G. W. Chadwick, conductor of the
Worcester, Mass., festival, to sing
several of bis own compositions at an
imposing musical function in Boston.
Ooe soprano who has been tentively
engaged is of extensive church and
concert experience. The other was
leading soprano in opera at Amster
dam for two years; since coming to
America she has appeared with tbe
New York Philharmonic Orchestra,
tbe Boston Symphony Orchestra, the
Thomas Orchestra, of Chicago, and
the largest choral organizations.
Everywhere she has been greeted
with the wiliest enthusiasm. Critical
and popular audiences unite in ac
cording her high honors.
The pianist, a pupil of Ferrata,
Madam Sosnowski and Alex Lambert,
has been received very cordially by
tbe public. Tbe organist is well
known in Canada and throughout the
Northern States.
The orchestra will probably be se
lected from the Van der Stuecker Or
chestra. of Cincinnati, and each mem-
bf'r engaged will be a real artist who
can stard on his own merits.
The festival chorus numbers one
hundred strong. All tne members
are earnest and enthusiastic in re
hearsals and have done much hard
work. Many of the choruses are now
sung with telling effect. The singing
of the Limestone College Choral So
ciety will probably exceed in accuracy
and effectiveness that of any choral
society in South Carolina at least, if
not any society in the whole South.
Only English works will be used.
This applies to soloists and chorus
alike.
We regret that we are not permitted
to divulge the names of the artists
whom we have indirectly mentioned.
Full announcement will be made
later.
Let all lovers of music and all pat
rons and friends of Limestone College
bear in mind the coming festival and
make their plans to attend.

Mr. Blount’s business is to

But not the stand or prices. The Dixie, who sells it
lor less, L still in the ring. We have changed our
name tw “THE DIXIE WHO SELLS IT FOR
LESS’’instead of the “Mill End Who Sells It For
Less.” r J he reason why we do this is because’the
“Mill End” is copyrighted and we cannot use the
name. But when you hear the band play “Dixie”
it makes you feel good, but when you come to THE
DIXIE W HO SELLS IT FOR LESS, the prices will
make you feel better than the hand. Just thiuk of
buying a $10 suit for $5 at THE DIXIE, and thus
cutting all other stores’ prices right smack in the
middle. We also carry a full line of Dry Goods.
Remember the place and look for the sign across
tho door:
