doubtless many poor people who

Lnd the man who enjoys such privi

ing toward the source of such privi-
le'ges when it lies within his power to
do them a lavor. Yet Mr. Butler,
with a railroad pass in his pocket,
and enjoying the distinction of being
an attorney for the Southern Rail
way company, had the courage to op
pose the plans of that company when
he believed those plane were detri
mental to the* interests of the people
he represented. Under any circum
stances be is to be applauded and
commended for his display of cour
age, and the only thing to be regret
ted is that he did not go right ahead
and do what he did without the
delegation waiting upon him.
Nevertheless, he showed, when it
became necessary, that he was the
servant of his people and not their
boss, and for this he is to be com

OIK HEAVY DOCKET.
The March term of court opens a
week from next Monday morning Ir
is a deplorable fact that the crirmnai
docket for this term is larger than ar
any term of court in the history of
the county. This immense docket is
due largely to the disgusting practice
of allowing cases to be continued for
the most trivia! cause. There are
men in j-til and out on bond who
should have been set free, sent to the
ipenitentiary or hanged months ago.
It is an outrage agaiost decency to
carry over from one couit to another
crimioal ca|es and thus pile up court
costs upon the taxpayer. Let us
hope that the court will do its duty
this term.
You can’t llaine the attorney for
doing his duty toward bis client and
continuing his case until the circum-
atances of the crime are forgotten
and public sentiment against the
criminal has in a measure subsided.
That’s the lawyer’s business and he
would be recreant to his trust if he
failed to do all in his power to save
hie man. But you can blame the
judge who hsa not the backbone and
ent-.nhood to say, “Go on with the
cas".”
Every time a criminal case is con
tinued it means that much more ex
pense to the county, and while we do
not believe that a man should be
pushed to trial with undue haste, we
do oot believe that his esse should be
delayed for his benefit at the cost of
justice and at the expense of the tax-
P“yer.

Barnum's
Monkeys
“All well—all happy—lots
of fun”. That is the regular
report from the monkey cage
of Barnum’s Circus ever since
the keepers began dosing the
monkeys with Scott’s Emul
sion. Consumption was carry
ing off two thirds of them
every year and the circus had
to buy new ones.
One day a keeper accident
ally broke a bottle of Scott’s
Emulsion near the monkev
*
cage and the monkeys eagerly
lapped it up from the floor.
This suggested the idea that it
might do them good. Since
then the monkeys have received
regular doses and the keepers
report very few deaths from
consumption. Of course it's
cheaper to buy Scott’s Emul
sion than new monkeys—and
that suits the circus men.
Consumption in monkeys
and in man is the same disease.
