May Music Festival at Limestone College.
Prof. Maxim informs us that the
festival of music in May will be ex
ceptionally attractive from many
standpoints. The selections by the
j chorus he mentions as first in imnort-
ar.ee, and this, too, notwithstanding
the fact that the best vocal and other
talent will be secured. We are glad
to know that chorus singing will oc
cupy a prominent place in the coming
festival. The chorus must be the
basis of every true festival. Cele
brated artists can be engaged at any
time. A good choral performance re
sults, not from a lavish expediture of
money, but from the personal appli
cation and faithful work of a large
number of people under a competent
leader.
Further, Prof. Maxim said that the
rehearsals had been, on the whole,
very regularly attended by members
of the chorus and that the results al
ready achieved seem to indicate a su
perb rendition of “The Rose Maiden”
and “Stabat Mater,” the chief chorus
numbers, in May. As May draws
near, however, the full membership
of the chorus should be present at
each rehearsal to obviate extra meet
ings. Next rehearsal tonight (Tues
day).

St. .Inlin llutler Returns.
St. John Butler, a former merchan
dise broker at this place, some
months ago fell short in hie accounts
with Armour & Go. Warrants were
issued for Mr. Butler’s arrest, but he
absented himself from the 3ity and
nothing had been beard of bim until
he wired Sheriff Thomas to meet him
in Spartanburg Monday night. The
sheriff took the first train for Spar
tanburg that night where he met But
ler and returned to the city with him
Butler was accompanied by his at
torney, Mr. Howard Carlisle, and Mr
Bookter Foster. He was carried be
fore Magistrate Phillips, waived a
preliminary hearing and was bound
over to court in a bond of 1500, which
he readily gave and was released. Mr.
Butler has many friends in Gaffney
who hope that a full investigation
will be made and that be will be able
to extricate himself from his unenvi
able position. Mr. Butler is confident
that he can do this and trusts that
those who know him will not pre>
judge the case until he has had an
opportunity to clear himself.
