SARRATT & GO. A RECEIVER APPOINTED. i Suit IlrouKlit A^stinst the ME’l by a Stork- holder KmaltM in the Appoint iiieiit of >i Kereiver for the Mill I'erdlnu itn Invruti- KHtiou of Its Kiimnrial Affairs. Like a thunderbolt from a cloudless sky, cume the intelligence last Thurs day that the Gaffney Carpet Manu facturing Company was in trouble. It was difficult for many to believe the rumor that was abroad and when the officers of the company were ap proached for information none could be obtained. The Ledger was prom ised the first facts that should be given the press, and for that reason said nothing in its issue of Friday concerning the matter. Later it was learned that a suit was begun against the carpet mill by one of its stockholders a few days ago. After the suit had been commenced the board of directors held a meeting and the company being somewhat embarrassed it was decided at this meeting that no contest would be made against the appointment of a receiver. The hearing was had at Chester, S. C., last Thursday, at which time and place Mr. H. D. Wheat, of this city, was appointed receiver of the plant. The mill has been closed down for a few days for the purpose of making certain repairs and ordering certain material which is necessary to keep it going. The Ledger representative has been informed that the order ap pointing Mr. Wheat receiver provides for his continuation of the work. The exact status of matters have not yet been arrived at and it may be ten days or two weeks before an accurate schedule of the mill’s assets and lia bilities can be made up. However, the appointment of Mr. Wheal as re- cei T er has done, much to restore the confidence of not only the local but also the foreign stockholders and creditors. It is certain that no credi tor will lose anything, and it is earn estly hoped and strongly believed that in a short while the plant will be reorganised and put on a paying basis. The appointment of Mr. Wheat is an absolute guarantee that the best interests of all concerned will be ju diciously taken care of. He is a man of extensive mill experience, and while he may have some things to learn concerning the carpet manufac turing business, it is quite certain that he will master it as quickly as any one else would. Xo one regrets this temporary em barrassment more than The Ledger. Mr. Kierck has been a warm friend to the paper and we had assiduously hoped for his success. His failure, if failure it can be termed, was due to causes over which he had no con trol It.is more than probable that had he been able to give the business the personal attention in the last few months that he did at first that no difficulty would have arisen. Mr. Bierck has issued a circular letter to the stockholders and creditors, a copy of which was sent this paper, but owing to the fact that we do not deem it of interest to the public, and the additional fact that we have not been requested to do so, we will not pub lish it It gives us pleasure to state that the business of the concern will be continued and that the mill will con tinue to operate. The officers of the company and the local attorney, Mr. J C. Jefferies, were non-committal when approached on the subject. In fact, they shut themselves up like clams. I)r.
