On account of a serious break In
our newspaper pres>8 we were unable
to get out a paper Tuesday, and
therefore we crave the indu'genee of
our patrons. The first, third, fourth
and eighth pages of this issue we set
up for Tuesday’s paper but on ac
count of this accident we were forced
to abandon that issue altogether, so
if the news appears a Ittle stale you
may know that this is the cause.

OCR EHILIPI’INE POLICY.
Under this caution The Columbia
State of lust Saturday has a vigorous
editorial in which the policy of our
government in regard to the Philip*
pirns is exposed and rebuked in
scathing terms. It is a pity such
an exposure cannot reach the ears of
the party in power and open their
eyes to the stupendous nature of
their follies and to the enormity of
their crimes.
Secretary Root, of the war depart
ment, declares that the insurrection
in the Philippines against the sover
eignty of the United States is of such
a character and extent as requires
the United States to prosecute its
rights by military force and there
fore creates the condition of war in
said archipelago.
This declaration is made, as the
State well remarks, “after three
years lacking two months of insur
rection-crushing, after at least a
dozen high official declarations that
the war in the islands had terminated,
after repeated assurances from the
civil government set up at Manila
that the islands were at peace and
the mass of their people reconciled
to American rule, after an expendi
ture of some if-ldO 000.000 to hold
what we paid $20 000 000 for—after
all this and on the very heels of a re
port from the civil government treat
ing the insurrection us a closed in
cident, we have the formal declara
tion of the Washington administra
tion that the resistance to the sover
eignty of the United States is so great
as to create a condition of war in the
Philippines.”
The State then goes on to show
that the war thus declared to exist,
is similar to that which existed for a
hundred years under the Spanish oc
cupation and is likely to last as long,
that the trade of the islands, even
though we could monopolize it, would
be but a paltry compensation for the
hundreds of millions we have spent in
attempts to get possession of them,
that facts have demonstrated the
futility of holding the islands as a
• base for the commercial conquest of
China, and in short that the whole
Philippine business is a gigantic faii-
ure, a stupendous folly, an inhuman
aggression, and unworthy of any en
lightened, civiliz -d g »V‘. rnment.
It is well that such words should
be spoken, though apparently they
fall to the ground unheeded. There
is no length to which unbridled greed
and bloated arrogance will not go in
the vain attempt to gratify and
satiate their votaries; there is noth
ing too cruel, or barbarous, or in
human for purita.iii al bigotry and
Pharisaical hypocrisy.

One unique feature of the meeting
of the South* rn Educational Associa
tion held last week in Columbia, was
the unusual number of lady speakers.
They occupied the platform along
with the men and took their turn in
platform oratory. This, we suppose,
is in strict, accordance with the
spirit of the times, but in a double
sense it is a new wrinkle in Southern
civilization.
It is now in order to make good
resolutions. No one can look back
over the past year without seeing
many times and occasions that he
might brtye greatly bettered, and the
impulse arises to 'make the coming
year more worthy of life than
its predecessor. By far the greater
number of these good resolutions will
be soon broken, but nevertheless
when formed in good faith they are
evidences of an earnest desire to grow
better, and that desire itself strength
ens and ennobles human character.
Today is the last day allowed by
law for the payment of taxes. There
is a general expectation that the t:me
will be extended, and under the cir
cumstances, the expectation ought
not. to be disappointed. In addition
to the money stringency which ap
peals for sympathy for the tax pay
ers, the people have been taught by
precedents to look for repeated ex
tensions, and to let the iaw now take
its course would be unfair to all.
The best way out of the dilemma is
for the coming legislature to fix the
limit at the lirst of February or
March, and let that»limit be definite
ana final. As long as the authorities
keep monkeying with it, so long will
there be inconvenience, uncertainty,
and more or less demoralization.

The whole country has sympathized
for weeks with the parents of Miss
Nell Cropsey, of Elizabeth City. N
O., who mysteriously disappeared a
month ago, after parting with her
lover one night on her father’s piuz
za. On ia-it Friday morning her
body was found by a fi&herman in
the Pacquotauk river, near her
father’s house. An autopsy revealed
no marks of violence, yet the
coroner's jury declared that she hud
been struck un the left temple and
then drowned. The young man
Wilcox who was lust with her on the
fatal night, is held for trial and pub
lic feeling is running high against
him. From ail the facts ma^e pub
lic, it is probable that she and young
Wilcox had a lover’s quarrel and that
as soon as he left her, she in a fit of
desperation jumped into the river
which ran close by her door. Wilcox,
if innocent, is certainly in an un
fortunate predicament and deserves
fur more sympathy than he will get.
Notice to Euro Imtuit Committee.
Trie committee of enrollment for
Gowdeysvil'e township are requested
to meet at Wilkinsville on Thursday,
January 8, 19U2 at 10 o’clock a. m.,
to enroll the names of all the soldiers
furnished the Confederate army by
the said township (whether dead or
alive) together with any and all cas
ualties ^obtainable.
The help of every survivor of the
Lost Cause as well as that of the de
scendants of the deceased is most
earnestly and respectfully lolicited
in order to make the the muster rolls
absolutely correct, and it is hoped
that they will see to it that the name
of no friend, relative or acquaintance
who went from what is now Gowdeys-
ville township, Cherokee county, is
omitted from the rolls now in process
of revision Lists of names with com
pany, regiment, etc,, are requested.
But if these are not known the name
of the soldier will do. We desire that
any soldier, however humble iu the
private waUs of life, shall have his
iiMine placi d on the honor rolls of his

especially enjoyed at Christmas times
and are not unusual in our part of
the country where good cooks and
plenty of provisions abound.
Last Friday night the 27th, the
young people were delightfully enter
tained at Mr and Mrs. K. R. Go
forth’s. Very dainty refreshments
were served ere the^nerry party dis
persed, and all who were so fortunate
as to be present will not soon forget
the occasion.
Misses Genie and Minnie Bergess
were to have given a party had not
the weather been so unfavorable. Wo
hope they will not decline the ide
simply because the Christmas hull-
uay s are over.
A large number of visitors were
here during the holidays. Among
the number were Mr and Mrs G. E
Brown and Mrs. W. C. Goforth of
Spartanburg, Mr. and Mrs. B. G.
Clary and Mr. and Mrs. J. T 3 Fcttit
of Gaffney.
We usually have some weddings ;
about Christmas, but this time none j
of our young people were so fortunate
or unfortunate as to enter the mat
rimonial state. However the color* d
people were of a different opinion,
and on Sunday tight at 8 o’clock
John Littlejohn and Julia Norris
were united in marriage by T. G.
Chalk, at his residence. These are
two worthy colored people and they
were the recipients of some useful
presents
Miss Sudie Byars has been the
guest of Misses Bessie and Mamie
Mathis.
