It is possible that if Senators Till

more exhibitions of their "dirty
linen" before the United States
Senate, that body will come to the
aid of the people of this State in get
ting rid of them both.
Local taxes in Gaffney will amount
to 2£ per cent, on ail that u man re
turns. This of course includes state
county, and town taxes It would
be interesting to know how many
people among us are clearing every
year 2^ per cent, on their capkal

The discovery of great reservoirs of
oil in the Southern States is likely to
mark the beginning of another epoch
in the world’s material progress.
When the supply of wood began to
be inadequate to the demands, coal
was discovered and large cities and
extensive manufactories were made
possible. But the supply of coai is
limited and just as the prospects of
its final exhaustion begin to excite
acme anxiety, the earth is found to
bold in its bosom immense lakes and
oceans of oil stored up through all
the ages against the time when it
would be needed for the world’s
further development. Now, it will
largely take the place of coal both
as fuel for furnishing warm'll in
winter and power to drive the world’s
machinery, being far suoeriur to coal
iu that it is chcoiper, less bulky, and
more effectual. Who so blind as not
to see infinite intelligence and be
nevolent forethought iu all this?
Who will deny that the hand that
made us is divine?

The British are waging a war of ex
termination in South Africa and are
adopting methods which would put
Tecumseh Sherman, Beast liutl-r,
and Butcher Weyler to shame. Fol
lowing the example set by Spain in
Cuba they have established reeon-
centration camps into which non-
combaiaut Boers are gathered and
Where they are dying at a rate ahock-
iug to humanity. There are over
100 000 of these unfortunates, in- s'ly
women and children, huddled to
gether in these camps, and the death
rate during September was 261 out
of every 1,000. It is stated on good
authority that every woman
or child that has a representa
tive in the Boer army, is allowed only
half rations—a quantity of food not
sufficient to sustain life. All this be
cause there are gold mines in South
Africa which England wants and be
cause the sons of the soil claim the
right to be free. Such inhumanity
ia a foul blot on the face of the clvil-
lted>orld,|and should make the name
of England an object of scorn and

ward in the city und entitled to re
deye just consideration from the rest
of the city. No part of this cetiimun*
ity is doing more for its upbuilding
and prosperity than W ard One.
Dr. W. L Settlmyer was duly elec
ted warden from that ward in the
present city council. He was entit
led to recieve the same courtesies and
consideration as the other wardens of
the city. To disregard him in the
management of the affairs of the city
is to disregard the people of that
ward. A slap at him is u blow at use.
We pay our taxes as do other resi
dents of this community. We ha/s
the same rights that they have. Our
representative at the city council has
as much right to sit there as does the
mayor himself.
Our information is that it is the
duty of the mayor and of the clerk of
the council to notify each member of
the council of the sessions in order
that the sessions might h a legal:
that for the city council to ignore any
one of the members of t he council and
thereby deprive him of tie functions
of bis office, raises a question of the
legality of the acts of the council.
• We are further informed that the
proper place for the meetings of the
council is at its public office, and
that for its meetings to be held else
where in order to prevent the pres
ence of any member of the council
would vitiate the acts of the council
so held in secret places
We are informed further that Dr.
Seltlemyer has been deprived of the
right to sit as a member of the city
council by the mayor and other war
dens of the city, and that it has been
done purposely, systematically an 1
deliberately. That he has not been
notified of the meetings and that this
city has been run during ihe term of
his office not by regular meetings at
the regular council office, but by
spncial meetings, specially called and
h Id in secret places for th-> sole
purpose of escaping the presence of
Dr Mettltmyeras a member of the
council.
Our information upon these mat-
teisis direct and positive, and we
have no hesitation in calling the at
tention of the public to them. In
fact we stand reai.y to establish its
correctness by proof. We think it
rl - to the people of this community
that their attentim be called ‘to the
m.iiier so ttiai this higti handed <>ut-
lage upon one unriiu of tin city may
