Miss Victoria Amos, o' Spartan burg, came to the city Friday and is the guest of her sister, Mrs. R C Sarratt, on L"gan street. W. T. Humphries, a good farmer and sterling eitiz-n, paid The Ledger a visit yesterday. Miss lone Littlejohn, of Wofford College, accompanied by her friend, Miss May Ligon, of Spartanburg, came to Gi ff iey Friday on a visit to her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Littlejohn, on Limestone street. John VV. Camp, a prosperous young lumberman and farmer, of Ruther ford county, N. C , honored The Ledger with a call yesterday. Lawrence Wood and DeVcr Little were in Spartanburg Friday. P. S. Webber, merchant and tanner of Wilkinsville, was a business visitor in the city Saturday. Wade Elmore, one of Cherokee’s good farmers and most woithy citi- z.-ns, came in to see Th* Ledger Sat urday and renewed. Mr. E more is a small farmer but has sowed thirty acres of wheat this fall. Ed. H. Humphries, a worthy young farmer, made a business visit to the L -ugi r Sat urday. M. Jones Porter, who lives in Gaff ney, but who is away most of the lime employed by the General Fire Extinguishing company, arrived in the city Friday and will remain a few days with his family. Col. J. L. Black was in the city a short time yesterday. Dr. Wm. Anderson, a prominent physician and surgeon of Blacksburg, was in the city Saturday on profes sional business. James G. Love, of Smiths Ford, was in the city Saturday on business. Andrew Goforth, a prominent farmer of Cherokee township, made a business trip to the city yesterday and honored The Ledger with a call and subscribed. Friday’s ritate was not received by subscribers in Gaffney till Saturday morning. Mrs. Dr. McKinney, nee Miss Belle Scott, of Brooklyn, Spartanburg county, was in the city the lust of the week on a visit to her mother, Mr-.. W. F. McArthur, on Race street Barney Husky, of Grassy Pond, was a business visitor in Gaffney Sat urday. R. v. 0. F. Felmet was in the city a short time yesterday. F. D. Hunter, a prominent busi ness man of Simpsonville, with im portant interests in Gaffney, was in the city Saturday on business. He honored The Ledger with a call and renewed. Our old friend Sam 0 Sarratt, the inimitable Bam, paid us a pleasant visit yesterday. D. P. Sides who ia in Charlotte. N. C., for a abort time arranging ma chinery in the Orient Mills, came home Saturday for a day or two with bis family. Thomas Phillips, of Bolling Springs, N. C., was in the city Saturday on business. Goodman Pridmore, a good Grassy Pond farmer, spent a short time in the city yesterday. Prof. Kit Young, one of Cherokee’s best teachers, was in the city Satur- oay a abort time. Price Martin, a prominent citizen and successful farmer of Cherokee township, passed through the city yesterday on his way to Columbia to serve as a juror in the U. H. Court. Thomas Whelohel, one of Chero kee’s most successful farmers and a member of that old family of Wbel- chei’s which became prominent through Dr. John Wnelchel's brav ery under Gen. Morgan at the battle of the Cowpeus, and has been so ever since, was a business visitor in the citv Saturday. Alexander and George La- 1 ney. of Monroe, N. 0.. arrived in the j city Friday on a visit to their sister, i Mrs. Ervin, who is very sick. SHORT LOCAL ITEMS. Dr W. C. Hamrick is having his residence on Limestone street re- painted. We learn that there will be several business changes in the city the 1st of January. You can’t afford to be without Pile Ledger twice a week, when it costs you only one dollar. The little cotton left in the fields is opening slowly, which retards wheat sowing on cotton lands. Sumter Littlejohn has rolled his residence in East Gaffney nearer to the street and otherwise rearranged his premises, which, when completed will add much to their general ap pearance. The room next to The Ledger office, which has been recently used as the council chamber, is being remodeled and will he used as a store room. We learn that Mr. John H. Lipscomb will occupy it. The many friends in Cherokee of Mr. Scott Jolly, of Sta^e Line, will be glad to learn that he has recovered from quite a severe attact of pneu monia. and that other members of his family who have been sick are convalesce! Wm. McKinley Allen, of Gaffney, has contributed one dollar to the McKinley Memorial fund. Any others wishing to contribute can leave contributions at The Ledger office and they will be forwarded to memorial headquarters. Will Smith, of Algood, one of Chero kee’s most successful farmers, was in the city Friday. Mr. Smith says he has been killing some good hogs this fall, but he has to play second to his brother Lee. who killed one that weighed over 5U0 pounds. We learn that the dispensary is doing a fine business every day and on every Saturday is selling over three hundred dollars worth of liquor This "great moral institution” thrives while all other businesses are complaining of dull times. We regret to learn Mr. J. C.
