Correspondence of Tne Ledger.I Etta Jank Dec 5.—Lstst week was a busy time with farmers and they have got most of their cotton picked j and wheat sown. There will be more ' small grain sown in this section this year than has been sown since 1881. Rev. W. H. White preached at Salem last Sabbath and Sabbath night. Large congregations attended both services A congregational meeting was held and T. J. Estis was elected elder, and J. W. Brown and H. L Estes elected deacons. Rev. A. D. Davidson, of Gaffney, who preached at Shiloh and Hickory Grove Baptist churches in York county, passed here Monday morn ing on his way home from Shiloh. He preaches at Shiloh on the liirst and Hickory Grove on the third Sab bath’s of each month. On account of the railroad schedules not making the proper connections at Blacks burg it is more convenient for him to go through the country by private conveyance. Henry Jeter, and old blind colored man from York county, was on this side of the river hunting a home Monday. He says he can run a two horse farm with ease. He was a ser vant of Hon. T. Both Jeter, ' in sla veryjtime." We hear but little of small pox now. With plenty of wheat and oats sown this fall and a good crop of both next year we will pull through the hard times that are now threatening us on every side. We have never i known a crop of wh^nt put in in bet- j ter ordt-r than the pret-ent. We regret to learn that Mr. Knott 1 I’aris, formerly ol Gaffney, died sud denly at Union recently. We are unable to give the particulars ot his death. He has a large number of friends and relatives in this county with whom we sympathize in their sore beieavement. Mr. W. C. Blackwell and county Commissioner W. G. Fow er, went to Gaffney last Monday on business Som- smart Aleck has found out the three quickest modes of commu nication are: telephone, telegraph, and tell a-woman. Buying liquor at retail and using it by whole sale is what ruins many man. Settling an estate according to law has been defined as giving the heirs what is left after the lawyers get through with it. The indolent man is the first to claim he never had an opportunity. The rain Monday night put a stop to plowing and wheat sowing. The ground is in fine fix to-day. Farm hands are scarce and there is a prospect of a good deal of land ly ing out next year. Fortunately a great deal of the best wheat land lias been sown down. At 12 :2() o’clock p. m., yesterday, the free ferry at Howell’s cut loose from its Cherokee lauding and made its first crossing with about fifty of the citizens of York and Cherokee counties on hand for a free ride. The machinery worked like clock work and everything is now in tip top or der for the pnblic use. We are glad to note the auspicious opening of the South Carolina Inter- State and West Indian Exposition at Charleston, and trust it may prove the dawning of a new and better era upon our beloved State. “So mote it be." The rain Monday night put the ground in good pioiwng order and the plows are busy putting in wheat now. Only a few chickens and turkeys will be on the markets from this sec tion tnis year, as compared with for mer years. Generally our farmers make up a wagon load just before the holidays set In. From our little friend, Master Archie Sparks, of Clifton, we have received .a letter which speaks well for a child of bis age. We know no better way for a boy or girl to im prove themselves than by letter writ ing. Go it, Archie, you will be a man home day of whom we Lope to be proud Master Archie’s parents are firm friends of The Ledger and thi paper sets a high value on their boy as well as those of its othe patrrons and will do all it can to encourage them. Mr. Oliver Byers Is t'.srking for his uncle, Mr. J. W. Mullinax, at Troy. Miss Bonnie McCluney is teaching school at Simnyside. Dr. Sam Foster is moving his ef fects to Union where he expects to run a dairy farm next year. Mr. Ben McCullough who lives down in the fork of i’acolet and Broad rivers, says he lives in the best section of Cherokee county and in the best neighborhood of people, for he has nobody but Ben and himself. Ben is a joiiy fellow and nobody but a chronic growler can have the blues where he is. The free ferry has already started the cotton wagons from the York side toward the Gaffney market J L 8.
