After mature deliberation we have
finally reached the determination to
change t lie business policy of File
ledger so far as its relation to sub
scribers is concerned. We are sick
and tired of the credit, system. It
entails hardships on the subscriocr
and the paper and causes unpleasant
ness that can he avoided. So bere-
alter The Ledger will be sent to no
one except it he paio for in advance,
and then it will only he sent for th<
tim* lo which it i- paid
In order that The Ledger may g"
ini' 1 « very home in the county and to
i)U ! it within the reach of everybody,
we have determined to restore it to
its former price, $1 00 a year.
The determination to place The
Ledger on a strictly cash-in-advance
system will do away with the un
pleasantness of sending duns to our
subscribers. It will also do awa>
with a few dead heads, that we have
been forced to carry every year, and
will put all on an equal footing. !So
hereafter no name will be placed on
our list without the cash accom-

It was left for a black fiend in hu
man snape to surpass all these in
cruelty and to slay the innocent and
helpless only for the hellish delight
of inflicting suffering and sorrow.
From the standpoint of the per
petrator of this deed, who suffered
death at the hands of an infuriated
mob, there is no just claim for mercy,
Miss Mamie, the youngest daughter
of A E. Vanpatton, died the 18th
and was buried the 20th inst., it
Mt. Lebanon cemet-ry. bhe had had
a spell of fever but had been up for
several days, and was thought to
nave been entirely out of danger, but
she took a reiapse which caused her
death. She was in her thirteenth
year. Truly, death is blind to age.
Mr. John Turner, of Rigby, spent
several days last week in this section
with his uncle, G. W. Chapman.
Simp Taylor concluded to practice
target shooting a little last Sunday
and taking the head of his brother-in-
law, Mr. John Barnett, for a target,
he emptied a load of bird snot
into his head and shoulder;
however, the wound is not serious,
and Mr. Barnett is getting along
nicely. Of course Taylor was drunk,
while Mr. Barnett is one of our best
citizens.
The cotton crop in this section is
no grounds of complaint, of cruelty, even chorter than it whs at first
not even^the right ot protection. The ! (bought to he. Our ginners report
that they will gin hut, little over half
the amount of cotton this season that
moment he fired the tatal shot at an
innocent, helpless, unoffending wo
man, that moment he forfeited his
own right to live and placed himself
beyond the pule of mercy.
But from the sti nduoint of society
and a healthy citizenship the Duell
ing was unwise and in ju-tifiable. It
destroyed a one-headed monster
but it raised a hydro-headed demon
to take his pluca. It struck down
murder by creating two hundred
murderers It avenged a violation of
law by over-riding all law. It at
tempted to annul a temporary wring
to society and humanity with wrongs
which society and humanity will feel
for a hundred years to come.
