ISpartanburg Free Laiice.] We congratulate the Gaffney Ledger on its determination to abandon the old errdit system with its sub scription accounts and adopt the c a s h-i n-advance-stop-when-time-i s- out plan. This has always been fol lowed by tbe Free Lance, our weekly, and we have yet to see tbe first sub scriber who does not like the plan. Sometimes we cut off of our mail list 150 names a week, but they all come back and bring their money* For the past month nearly every weekly and semi-weekly paper that comes to this office has contained frantic appeals to delinquent sub scribers to "settle up.” N othing of the kind ever appears in The Free Lance, for no subscriber to it owes us a cent. $1 a year is as much as most people want to pay for a weekly or semi-weekly paper and one cannot be produced at that price except for cash in advance for every copy printed. Barn Burned. Last Saturday night about 9 o’clock the barn of Mrs. Mary Lockhart, about three miles south of the city was discovered to be on fire aud was soon entirely consumed, together with the contents which were about fifteen tons t of hay. Circumstances pointed plainly to inceodiaryism. Mr. Thomas H. I Lockhart came over from Blacksburg at midnight and after investigation arrested Wm. Bonner, a colored man. on suspicion aud placed him in jail to await a preliminary trial, which will be held next Friday at 10 o’clock before Magistrate Phillips. yuartrrly Conference.
