SHORT LOCAL ITEMS. Finckeu and Baker are having their restaurant repainted inside and out, and otherwise improved. We learn that the free ferry at Howells is not in operatin yet, but we have reason to hope that it will be in the next few days. The mayor’s courts have not at tracted large audiences nor contri buted much to the city treasury or ohaiugang this week. We are indebted to Mrs. W. O Lips comb for samples of his second crop of Irish potatoes They were fine and we enjoyed them hugely. We bad a little rain Monday and Tuesday, but Wednesday morning was bright as a new pin and the weather has been fine since, with frost every morning. H. E. Tindal, a thriving Beaver- dam farmer, presented us yesterday with some fine specimens of “snap beans” which he gathered from his fit-id. “Snap beans” the 7ih of No vember is a rare dish, even in a county so resourceful as Cherokee. Fails, for quite awhile an efficient stenographer in the Gaff ney Carpet Mill office, has accepted a position in the office of the Ark wright Mills in Spartanburg. Mr. Fails is highly esteemed in Gaffney and his many friends here regret his change of places. Wm. A. Austell, of Midway, was in the city yesterday. H. T. Crigier. a prominent business man of Spartanburg, was in Gaffney Wednesday. H. D. Matthis,of Ravenna, a farmer tor a county to be proud of, came in to see The Ledger yesterday. W. D. Wm. A. George, of Wilkinsville J a worthy young Cherokee farmer was a Ledger visitor yesterday. Col. John L Black paid The Ledger a short visit yesterday afternoon. Miss Marie 8mith, of Algood, hon- most worthy and highly respected citizens, died at his residence on E ist Limestone street on Tuesday, the 5th inst , at 3 o’clock p. m., in his 89th | year. Mr. Porter was born in the Union portion of what is Cherokee county. He married in early life and after his marriage he spent many years in York county and Y irkville, where his first wife died. He has seven children and a large number of grand children living. In 1882 Mr. Porter moved to Gaffney and a short, time after he married Miss Lizzie George, who has been a great stay and comfort to him in his declining years. Attentive to bis every want and with unrelenting devotion and care she smoothed his way to the end. Mr. Porter was a carriage maker by trade, was industrious and frugal, a man of good practical sense and was tonest and true in all the relations of life. He was a Confed erate veteran, was a member of the Methodist church and was comforted hy his faith when the final summons came. The funeral services were con ducted yesterday at the Buford Street Methodist church by the pastor, Rev. W. H Hodges, assisted by Rev W. R Potter of the First Presbyter ian church, and the remains were buried in Oakland cemetery in the presence of a large number of Sorrow ing friends and relatives. The pall hearers were. Capt. B. Bell, C G. Parish, F. G. Stacy. R. M Wilkins J. D. Jones and B. F. Camp. Star Tht-atre. Things are moving about the Star Theatre this week. Miss Jones, of Kentucky, is the guest of the Rev. and Mrs. Potter. Mr and Mrs. W. J.
