VVashinoton Oct. 1 —Senator Mc-
Laurin’s iifluence with President
Roosevelt was strikingly illustrated
to-day by the appointment of George
R Koester. editor of the Columbia
Record,, to the vacant collectorship
of internal revenue for the district of
S<»ut h Carolina.
Mr. Koester’s name has been un
der consideration ever since the turn
ing down of Loomis Blalock, but his
triends have managed to keep bis
name out of the newspapers for fear
tnat the plans for his election might
not work out successfully.
It was not expected that an ap
pointment would be made for a week
or more, or at least that is what Sen
ator McLaurin stated after his inter
view with President Roosevelt Satur
day last.
The Senator, while declining to
give the name of the winner, declared
that when the appointment was oHi
chilly announced it would by a great
sururi>e to all concerned, especially
in South Carolina.
.lust what induced President Roose
velt to bestow the appointment upon
Hester just prior to his denart-
