Music may mean diiTerent things
to different men, but all must admit
that sweet music at all times, and in
all places, is touching and inspiring
There all kinds of music—songs
suited to persons in all conditions of
life, from the time when the shep
herds were awakened by the sweet
singing of the angels, while watching
their Hocks on the sloping hills
around Bethlehem, down to the pres
ent day. Music is comforting to the
weary soul, or to those whose hearts
are bowed down with sorrow. The
good old songs of Zion are many times
balm for the wounded spirit, and
binds up the broken heart. The
wandering Jew delights to hear, ‘‘Je-
rusalem My Happy Home,” sung to
an old familiar air. And think of
John Howard Paine when far away
from home he wrote his immortal
“Home, Sweet, Home” that lived so
long after he has passed away, and
will live through all the ages.
Children, very early in life, learn to
listen with delight to singing and be
lulled into gentle sleep by the low,
sweet notes of a mother’s lullabies.
We need more spice and enliven-
merit in our church music. Congre
gations are discussing whether they
shall have choirs or organs or cornets.
I say take that which will bring out
the most inspiring music. We need
zeal and spirit in our church music;
soul stirring music in which all the
congregation can join and feel better
for having done so. Hardened hearts
are very often touched by singing. It
is said that the old millionaire, Wil
liam H Vanderbilt, in his last days
while he looked from his window
seemingly into the great heaven, that
his attention was suddenly attracted
by the soft notes of an old familiar
hymn and when, in answer to his in
quiry, he was told it was only his
nurse singing, be said tell her to
come in and sing it to me again, and
when she took a low s<-at at the old
man’s feet and sang he seemed to be
lost in thought, and who knows but
the singing of that hymn won a soul
for Christ.
flinging in the night by Paul and
Silas converted the jailor’s family and
saved them, and I have come to the
conclusion that if we are going to
have successful gospel meetings that
we have got, to have a little more lift-
in them, and life is found in singing
Such hymns, “Jesus Lover of Mj-
floul,” “Rock of Ages,” “There is a
Fountain Filled With Blood,” etc.
These hymns are \lways good, but
we want a variety; we want new
hymns as well as the old ones. I find
it wakes up a congregation to bring
in now and then a new hymn And
if you cannot wane them up with
preaching, let us sing it into them,
and I believe the time is coming when
we will make a good deal more im
pression singing the Gospel. I be
lieve I would like it better, for I
think that Jesus is better pleased
when we lift our hearts and voices in
praises to His holy name. Oh, the
blessed thought of praising God In
heaven, with all the redeemed and
| Holy angels, there is a song the ran-
i somed sing to Jesus, their exalted
| King with joyful hearts and tongues.
Oh 1 that’s the song for me;
Then wt- will a wavs be sineing.
Serve Tbe,- as Thy hosts above.
And praise Thee without cohsIiik;
Glory to Thy perfect love.
Then let us sIiik for Jesus
While here on earlh we stav,
And when His voice shall call us
To realms of endless day.
As one by one we gather
KeJ< icing on the shore.
We will shorn His praise in glory
And sing loreyer more.
Amen,
Lillik McDaniel.
