Hickson preached one of his most able sermons on that occa sion, his theme being, “The Apos tolic church in its Christ-like simplic ity.” Never before has it been our privilege to listen to an abler or ; more instructive lesson on the early : establishment of Christ’s church through His apostles We were pleased to notice quite a number of our Gaffney friends were with us and j many other visiting brethren from I other churches. Dinner was served i and we believe all our friends were cared for. so we had an enjoyable i meeting. Farm work is now on to stay until i all things are fully harvested and small grain sown. The hay harvest, 1 consisting of pea vines, crab grass | and sorghum cane, has been a fine | one—more, I think, than I ever saw before—and much valuable machin ery bus been bought and used by many of our planters in saving hay. j In fact this part of the farm work among our people up here cannot longer be considered in the back ground, many farmers having saved mote^than will be required for home consumption. Cotton picking with us has just gotten under way. The crop is short and very late, and an early frost, would make it much shorter. Corn on upland is fine where it was well worked, but all lowlands have almost entirely failed. Mr. W. N. Turner, who has been to Hot Springs. Ark., for his health, is at home again, but is talking of wind ing up his business here and making the West his home for a while. Rev J. M. Bridges will soon move to Shelby, N. 0., he having been called to the pastorate of several churches not far from there. We wherever he may ing in prices. Csmliier. of attending the Union of the northern section of the Broad River Association a few days ago. It met with Mount I’uron church a few miles north of Blacks burg. This was a union in all that that term implies, for even the din ner. consisting of the greatest abund ance of good things of every kind, was each day spread out together, and every delegate and all visiting friends were made to feel a welcome at every home in the entire commun ity awaited them. The union, we feel, did some good work and we be lieve the good people about Paron will keep it going on over there. The work on Sunday morning consisted of Sunday school talks and song ser vice and was apparently enjoyable to all. Prof. S. A. Chambers cam* in and preached a very able sermon on the subject of “Missions.” His text was. ' The love of God constraineth ! us.” His sermon was delivered with | much force and earnestness and was i most attentively heard by a large and i well-behaved audience. A liberal | collection for missions was raised and j the Union adjourned. The delegates j parted from these good people with a J prayer from every heart for their j welfare in all future life. The next ' Union will meet with the Piedmont church in December. 1 will send in program in time. L u D. The Court of Common Pleas. The court of Common Pleas, .lodge Gary presiding, convened yesterday morning. The first case to come ^up was that of J. S. Moore it Son., vs. St. John Butler. The plaintiff was represented by Wallace & Otts- and ohe defendant by Butler & Osborne. The defendants interposed a demurrer which the judge first sustained, but he hud not signed the order and was still considering it when this article was written. The next case was that of A. M. Dover vs. the Yirginia-Carolina Chemical Co. The plaintiff was represented by N. W Hardin and Butler & Osborne, while the defen dant was represented by Duncan, Sanders it Hall. This case was occu pying the attention of the court as we go to press. Cheap Kates on the Southern, On account of the Annual State Fair, Columbia, S. C., the Southern Railway announces round trip rates from all points on the lines in the State of South Carolina, also from Asheville, Charlotte, Augusta Sa vannah and intermediate stations to Columbia, S. C., and return. For individuals, one first class fare for round trip plus SO cents, admission to tiie Fair grounds ; minimum rate including admission to he $1.00 for adults and 50 cents for children. Prof. JuhiiMm to Travel. Prof. W. L. Johnson, who has re cently been connected with the Car- uet Mill’s traveling force, will leave today for Cincinnati. Ohio. He goes to accept a position as traveling sales man for a piano house in that city which he formerly represented in the | same capacity.' His territory will be , the states of North and South Caro- j lina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida and I Lnuisana. The ceiling of the Delmonico Cafe, in this city, caught afire yesterday morning from the kitchen stove, hut the blaze was extinguished before any material damage was done.
