presiding.

The examination and swearing in of
the jsTors was such begun, the prisoner
fmiBtim* as each was sworn. Tne first
juror summoned was Frederick V.
Lauer, a plumber. He was examined
briefly by tue district attorney and
counsel for the defense. No objection
wa^ made and Lauer was accepted.
Ilicuurd J. Garwood, a street railway
foreman, was next summoned. One of
the questions put to him by District At
torney Penny was:
“Do you believe in the present form
<jf guverunKUi?” To which Garwood
replied:
‘’Yes. M
Judge Lewis asked Garwood if he
would acquit a man if it was clearly
S roven that he was insane at the time

Mr. Garwood replied tuat he would.
After a few more questions from
Judge Lewis, Garwood was accepted.
The third of the panel called to the
bj.tr was Joshua Winner, a farmer of
North Collins. He was objected to by
the defense ami excused.
Henry W. Wendt, a local manufact
urer, when called announced tuat he
had formed no definite opinion on the
case; his opinion would be governed by
the evidence alone. He was sworn iu.
After eight jurors had been accepted,
the last of whom was Benjamin F.
Ralph, a bank cashier, the court ad-

Two negro “trusty” convicts and a
white man named Duncan, an ex con-
vict. have been arrested, charged with
murdering Henry E. Newell and wife
at Pilgrim’s Rost Sunday night. The
three men will be brought here and
placed in jail Duncan was only re
cently puruoned from tbe penitentiary.

circles tiie opinion is growing that there
will have to be further borrowing by

the continued fighting iu South Africa,
Bays the London correspondent of The
Tribune. The only relief to the drain
upon the resources of the nation is the
money which is expected to be realized
by the sale of farms belonging to those
irreconcilable Boers who have left their
wives and cuiidreu to the care of Lord
Kitchener. This relief can only be very
trifling, however, and it is huruly likely
to nave an appreciable effect.
Commenting on tne military situa
tion, the correspondent says:
“The newspapers are clamoring for
energetic prosecution of the straggle
and are pleased to be able to print Lord
Kitchener’s announcement of tne cap
ture of Koch’s commando and the Car
olina commando.
“Tnese British successes are regarded
as some compensatiou for the reverses
reported last week. Geueral Louis
Botha has now lost a large number of
his cattle, and he may find it necessary
to alter considerably his plans.
"Kretzinger endeavored to imitate the
example set him by Smuts, of cutting
his way through the British lines. He
failed, but Lovant’s scouts suffered se
verely in keeping him soutn of the
Orange river.

“The appareutlv inexhaustible supply
of ammunition which the Boer> nave at
their commana is the subject of consid
erable talk among Stock Exchange men.
Doubtless the stores imported before
the war have not yet been entirely used

For the first time ir is now known in
this country that Schoepers succeeded
iu capturing the loyal delegates on their
reiuru to their homes in Oudisokorn
from welcoming the Duke of Cornwall
at Cape Town. Lorn Kitchener’s mes
sage clears up the mystery as to the lo
cation of the waterworks mentioned in
recent dispatches, reporting the capture
of two guss by the Boers. It was gen
erally understood that the Pretoria wa
terworks were referred to, but it is now
clear tnat it was the Etotfuifontoiu wa-
tvrworks from which the captured guns
ami escort started.
It is a singurar coincidence that the
battery whicu lost a gun nstr the wa
terworks in the fiirin of March 31, IlHW,
