Thompson had gone to ('bar lotto on the Southern northbound | vestibule, which reaches that city , alter durk, and alighting before the 1 train stopped at the depot, he unfor- j t uoately jumped in the way of a j switching engine which was goitig in j the opposite direction and was knock- i ed down and run over before the en gine could he stopped. He was ter ribly mutilated from his feet n< arly to his breast, but lived for two hours and was perfectly conscious during that time. He was removed to tne baggage room of tb- passenger sta tion and medical aid summoned, but lie wan beyond mortal power to save. When his bodily suffering ban been relieved by morphine it is said that Thompson’s mortal injuries seemtd to intensify rather than decrease ihe clearness of his mind, and left him strung-voiced'as a well man, grieving at heart and stricken wnb awe. His condition typified all borrow of sud den death. The following extracts are taken from the Charlotte Observ er’s account of the tragedy: “In the little time that he knew was left to him Thompson was eager ly repentant and begged for the pray ers of those about him. He realized that his minutes even were numbered and he talked rapidly, as a man who had much to say—who could not say enough of surrow and remorse. “Until five minutes past 10 o’clock Thompson talked and then as he opened his lips for speech he died. His last utterance was a prayer for forgiveness. Before this he nad in formed a questioner that his parents were Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, of Gas tonia, and he b. gg*‘d a friend who was at his side to tell his parents that he sorrowed for the trouble he had caused itiem; that he nad lived a wretched life—but to forgive him. “At the iast he said he wanted his life and death to s’and for warning. Without reservation or excuse he pronounced his life as bad. and held up the manner of his death as an ob- j -ct lesson. Dying brought, as chief •*st consideration, a tense, fearful cry of repentance, for forgiveness—and life went out with that.” Death is awful in almost any form, but nothing more horrible cun be conceived by the human mind than death under such circumstances ;*8 those which surrounded the end of John E Thompson's earthly exis tence. The dvatb of young Thompson was particu arly sad and shocking to the attaches of The Ledger office, as ne "'as connect-d with the job depart ment of this office for several mouths, and up to a month ago, when he went io his home in Gastonia. The Atlanta Daily News, of the KF h inst , says : M.«jorR S McFarlin, a gallant old Confederate soldier, after fighting against disease for weeks, passed : quietly away last night at 7 iiO o'clock while asleen at his home, 104 Pulliam street. H'*art complications . were the cause of death. “Major McFarlin was deputy clerk ; of the Fulton superior court, and j there is great sorrow today at the court-house. ‘He moved to Atlanta six years ago frotn LaGrange, where he had lived since the close o f the civil war. He wa« born in Hogansville. in Troup county. He was 62 gears of age, and is survived by four daughters—Mrs. J T White, of Barnesville; Mrs H. Fay Gaffney, of Gaffney, S. C; Miss Janie Lou McFarlin and Miss Minnie McFarlto. “When the war between the states began Major McFarlin enlisted in the Third Alabama hs a private. He was afterwards transferred to the Sixtieth Georgia of which he became adju tant. He was severely wounded dur ing the Virginia campaign and on one occasion left on the battlefield for dead. “Later in the war he became bri gade quartermaster with the rank of major. Aftc-r the war he became a planter, living in LaGrange and con trolling a large plantation near there. He was at one time clerk of the Troup superior court and was prominent in the politics of the county.” It was with deep regret that we learned of the death of t his goodjtnan, and we heartily sympathize with the bereaved and grief-strict'en family. This proceeding on the part of the trainmen evidently incurred their righteous indignation as they retaliated bv rocking the i rain and its crew, and thus got them selves into still deeper trouble. H Sanford ot Orangeburg, spent several days in the city this week, the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Byars, on Limestone street Mr. Sanford held services at, the Cherokee Avenue Baptist, church last night. He preached an excellent sermon to a large and appreciative ••ongregation. Mr. Sanford was the guest of Mr and Mrs. Byars during *he State Barr’st Convention which met here in 1891) Mr Sanford left for home this morning.
