Wilkins returned from the northern markets last night. Mrs. Wilkins met him in Charlotte yester day morning and they spent the day in the Queen City. Mr and Mrs J. C. Ratliff returned to the ci*y today after a three weeks’ trin through the north. While away they visited most of the principal cit ies in the north and east and spent some time at the Buffalo exposition. We hope their trip was fraught with much pleasure. Hughes will be delighted to learn that he is now able to he up and about after several weeks severe sickness. He was Up street Tuesday, but was looking thin aod pale and it will be several weeks before he will regain his former strength. On the 17'h and 18th of this month Mr. M Poliakoff wul open a branch of the Boston B*rpr*iin tStore at Greenwood. The people of Green wood may rest assured that Mr Po liakoff will conduct his business on broad lines and that he will not stoop to little things to gain trade, nut he will win it by honest and straightforward methods. The first new bale of cotton from Cherokee county this season was brought to the city yesterday by Mr. M. M. Tate, of Webster. It was gin ned by the Victor Cotton Oil Com pany and sold to Messrs. Carroll & Carpenter. The bale weighed 438 pounds and brought 8.J c*-nts. The Ledger is essentially the news paper for the county of Cherokee and there is no reason why it should not go into every home in the county. September 9th. was 7b degrees, which is slightly b-low the normal. The maximum temperature for the week was 92 de grees at Beteshurg and Blackwille. minimum oil degrees at Greenville. The amount of sunshine whs above the normal, which following as it did a period of deficiency, has been gen erally benifh'ial to crops Nodamag ing wind hail or violent storms have been reported. Meteorological con ditions have been unusually equable for the week. The rainfall for the week was be- j low the normal Greenville reported 1 L") inches and Cheraw 1 13 inches ! while Allendale Biteshurg, Black ville and St. Matthews were without rain. At a few places showers were said ro he beneficial Cotton is still rusting and shed ding in most places. While the growth is rank on clay lands, it is not well fruited. Bolls opening rapidly, in places opening is hast ened by rust. Picking is general, for which the weather has been favorable. The week has been well suited to the needs of the cotton crop, but the it j iry of previous un favorable conditions is generally ap parent. Crop generally late. Some early corn is being gathered and the late crop is maturing rapid ly, ears well fided but small. The corn crop is reported to be much be low the average. Fodder pulling is about finished much j hay J and forage crop- have been saved the yield generally reported as b-ing good. Irish po tatoes, sweet potatoes, rice and minor crops doing well. Miss Newman is an elocutionist of unusual ability, and has a reputation that is both widespread and enviable. She is vis iting friends in Blacksburg and by them was induced to give an enter tainment not long go in that city The affair 'was such a success that she has been induced to come to Gaffney. Aside from the fact that you will be entertained, Gaffney owes it to this distinguished visitor to give her a fine reception. Then again, the cause is a worthy one and should be well patronized. The fads were very cleverly repre sented, and created no end of amuse ment.
