In Ignorance of Their ‘ ale.
A stiff breeze soon carried them down
the buy and out to sea. As day followed
day in dull monotony, without any in
dication timt a landing was contem

kept in ignorance, not only of their fate,
but o: ineir probable dcBtination, be
came uneasy ana r<-quested to kuow
where they were being taken.
They were told they would be lauded
on English soil far enough away to pre
vent a return to the United States for a
long time. Ou tne seventh day land

Meat and Some May Die.
Atlanta, Sept. 5. — A wholesale
poisoning occurred at Fort McPherson
yesterday, as a result of which 275 sol
diers are uow iu the post hospital from
baviug eareu stewed meat prepared over
Uight by tue mess sergeant.
Of the 270 men reported poisoned, 50,
it is said, are serioudy and violently ill,
and several pf that number may die.
The atfair created the greatest excite
ment at tne tort, and it was given out
that au official investigation was under
way, ordered by tue colonel in com
mand, to place the blame where it be
longed. Tue most rigorous guard is
kept over the hospital and the officials
refuse to make any statement about the
matrer.
The Hospital was said to have been a
scene of excitement and coufusiou yes
terday. and tne working surgeons, the
hurrying nurses and tue groans and
prayers of the sick men made a scene
the like of wuich wus never before wit
nessed at the fort.
It was a hard matter to ascertain pre
cisely what kind of meat caused the
wholesale poisoning of the soldiers, but
from wnar could be gathered it is be
lieved tiiat tne meat was a stew pre
pared over night iu a vessel that caused
a poison to contaminate the meat betore
it was served for break last.
The otticml investigation will proba
bly bring out some very iuterectiug, if
uot sensational facts.
